An unassuming greeting became the subject of debate overnight after Masterchef Australia finalist Sarah Tiong accused an Australian radio station of being racist — by saying “ni hao ma” (Mandarin for how are you) and “lei ho ma” (Cantonese) to her.

The Sydney-born chef, whose parents hail from Malaysia, posted an Instagram story earlier this week sharing how she felt “uncomfortable and shocked” by how “insensitive” and “tone-deaf” the experience was.

Blood may be thicker than water but one family almost came to blows when they could not agree on how to handle their deceased matriarch’s belongings.

A 73-year-old man, who allegedly brandished a knife and threatened to kill his own son after the latter tried to dispose of some of his late mother’s items, was arrested for criminal intimidation on June 9, the police confirmed to AsiaOne.

The altercation took place at Blk 314 Yishun Ring Road at 9.18am, in a flat shared by the pair.

Speaking to Lianhe Wanbao, the son, who did not want to be named, explained that his mother had died from an illness five years ago.

After his mother’s death, his relationship with his father deteriorated, he said. His father became short-tempered and would often scold him.

“Whenever I organised my mum’s belongings, my father would get very angry and ask me to stop,” he told the Chinese evening daily.

Japanese YouTuber tries getting a 'Singapore-style' haircut, says he now looks like an onigiri

What is a Singapore-style haircut? It’s a minor mystery that Singapore-based Japanese vlogger Ghib Ojisan recently tried to find out for himself while wandering the empty walkways of People’s Park Centre to look for a barbershop.

Noting to viewers how his hair has grown out of control, the popular YouTuber’s latest video featured his quest to find a barber at the retail section of the Chinatown establishment.

Among the rows of shuttered shops, he managed to find a Ten Dollar.com Salon on the second level of the People’s Park Food Centre, where he stated that he would like a “Singapore-style” haircut.

It’s an odd and unknown request for the hairdresser, but Ojisan was insistent about his preferred cut, even as the situation grew real awkward. It was even tougher for the chatty vlogger to communicate with his Vietnamese hairdresser — who knew little English — so Ojisan had to rely on what little Mandarin he knew and some translations on his phone.

SINGAPORE – This year’s Formula One Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix has been cancelled, F1 and race promoters Singapore GP said on Friday (June 12).

The announcement regarding the Sept 20 event, one of the highlights of the local sporting calendar, had been widely expected, given the severe disruptions created by the coronavirus pandemic both locally and internationally.

Singapore GP said it was unable to proceed with the race due to the prohibitions imposed on access and construction of the event venue. Such works around the 5.063km Marina Bay Street Circuit, which normally start in May, have not commenced and will not be completed in time for the race in three months.

It also noted other challenges including ongoing mass gathering and worldwide travel restrictions due to Covid-19. After all, 40 per cent of the Singapore race’s spectators are from overseas while the race weekend also boasts top international music acts that form part of the unique night race experience.

SINGAPORE – There are 463 new coronavirus cases confirmed as of Friday noon (June 12), taking Singapore’s total to 39,850.

These include 18 community cases, comprising eight Singaporeans or permanent residents and 10 work pass holders, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Of these, five were close contacts of earlier cases, and had already been placed on quarantine. MOH picked up another five cases from its surveillance and screening of workers in essential services and persons working at dormitories.

Epidemiological investigations are ongoing for the other eight cases, MOH said.

Migrant workers living in dormitories make up the other cases.

More details will be announced later on Friday by the MOH.

On Thursday, Singapore recorded 422 new Covid-19 cases including five community cases.

Four of the five community cases reported did not show symptoms and were detected through proactive screening, said the MOH.

Two of these four hold work passes, while the other two hold work permits, and all four are either in essential services or are contacts of previous cases.

Applications from four opposition parties to join the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) ahead of the upcoming general election have been put on hold indefinitely, The Straits Times reported.

Singaporeans First (SingFirst), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), People’s Power Party (PPP) and Reform Party (RP) had reportedly indicated their interest in joining the SDA, the only registered political alliance in Singapore, in March.

Speaking to the newspaper on June 11, SDA secretary-general Abu Mohamed said: “We have not organised a proper CEC (central executive committee) meeting to talk about it.

“What I will say is, I have spoken to the other members of the SDA leadership, such as our chairman and vice-chairman, and they have already told me what they think.

Fake Facebook accounts in Singapore taken to task ahead of expected GE

0

[ad_1]

Several fake Facebook accounts in Singapore have been identified by the social media giant as it prepares to protect the integrity of Singapore’s General Election (GE).

Using a combination of tools, including artificial intelligence, Facebook found that these accounts demonstrated what it calls “inauthentic behaviour” and has taken them to task.

During a media briefing yesterday, Facebook head of public policy Clara Koh said it is committed to keeping the platform safe and has been removing such accounts to safeguard elections globally.

However, she declined to provide specific details on how many such accounts were found and what the violations were.

Last year alone, 50 entire networks, each typically consisting of hundreds of such accounts, were removed. These accounts are believed to be involved in campaigns to manipulate public debate, especially those relating to elections.

“Singapore’s elections are a high priority. We publicly announce all of these takedowns for full transparency,” Ms Koh said.
