Singapore Airshow To Feature 8 Air Shows; To Be Broadcast Live To The Public

0

SINGAPORE: This year’s Singapore Airshow will feature eight air shows and flying shows from four air forces and two commercial companies, organiser Experia said on Monday (Feb 7).

The airshow will be held at the Changi Exhibition Centre from February 15 to 18, with no public visit days, the airshow will be broadcast live.

This includes the debut of the IAF Light Fighter or Tejas fighter, Experia said, adding that the performance of a single jet would feature “impressive stunts and maneuvers”.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) is returning this year with two performances featuring a one-man aerobatic flight of two AH-64D Apache attack helicopters and an F-16C fighter jet.

The U.S. Marine Corps’ F-35B Lightning II – a mock-up of the stealth fighter the RSAF has agreed to buy – will make another appearance. A USAF B-52 Stratofortress will take part in a flyby.

Indonesia’s Jupiter Aerobatic Team – known as Jupiter – will also return after previously participating in the 2018 airshow and will “thrill” audiences with their six-aircraft formation and precise flight.

Commercial aircraft watchers can expect to see demonstration flyovers of the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing wide-body B777-9.

Airshows will be held daily on February 15th at 12:30pm and February 16-18th at 11:30am. The public can watch the live broadcast via the Singapore Airshow’s Facebook page or this website.

“These outstanding performances by our partners and exhibitors are testament to the recovery of the aerospace industry and we hope they will lift the spirits,” said Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director of Experia.

The Singapore Airshow will be scaled back for the second time since the COVID-19 pandemic, with strict health controls for trade visitors and a lack of public days for locals, dampening potential attendance.

The challenges of hosting the biennial airshow reflect global travel difficulties that have made it difficult for the Asian aviation industry to bounce back two years after the pandemic.

About 360 companies are expected to attend, including major industry players such as Airbus, Boeing and Lockheed Martin, down from 930 in 2020, according to the Singapore Airshow’s website.

Man Jailed For Using Telegram Stolen Credit Card Details On Taxi And Burger King

0

SINGAPORE: A man visited a Telegram group chat that was spreading stolen credit card details and used them to make taxi bookings and Burger King orders worth hundreds of dollars.

Serial criminal Muhammad Syawal Kamis, 32, was sentenced to six months and one week in prison on Monday (Feb 7).

He pleaded guilty to three counts of cheating and two others were taken into consideration.

The court heard that Syawal came across a Telegram group chat sometime before November 21, 2020, in which stolen credit card details were circulating.

He found a set of details published by the Bank of Oklahoma and decided to use it. He adds credit card details to his ComfortDelGro taxi booking account.

Between November 21, 2020 and December 23, 2020, Syawal booked 34 taxis and charged his credit card. He continued to book taxi rides until an error message popped up in his account.

The taxi company discovered fraudulent transactions worth S$562.91 and lodged a police report in February 2021.

A few weeks before that, Syawal linked stolen credit card details he retrieved from Telegram chat groups to his Burger King account. Between February 8, 2021, and March 2, 2021, he used multiple foreign credit cards to buy food from the fast-food restaurant on seven occasions.

An accountant working for Burger King in Singapore lodged a police report in early March 2021 saying the company had uncovered fraudulent transactions worth S$225.40.

In March 2021, Syawal also used the stolen credit card details to buy two S$28 worth of cartons from a company called Jaguar 3R Ventures.

Prosecutors are demanding a final verdict, noting that Syawal has been paid in full.

However, Syawal has a long list of convictions since 2003, when he received a suspended sentence for criminal breach of trust. Over the years, he has been convicted for crimes such as theft and criminal breach of trust, ranging from rehabilitation training to jail time.

He was last jailed in November 2018 on charges of cheating.

As a reprieve, Syawal asked for a shorter sentence, saying he has a daughter and a wife living in Indonesia. He said he was the only breadwinner and a house painter, but his business was affected by the pandemic.

He had to find temporary work to survive and said he had cooperated with police.

“At the moment I was arrested, I was very upset … and remorseful that this happened to me again. I was upset that I (didn’t) avoid crime,” he said.

Looking emotional, Syawal said he knew he was related to past beliefs, but said he was “actually turning a new leaf”.

“I know my freedom will be difficult for me to achieve and I will continue where I started, with my wife and daughter. Please give me a (lenient) punishment this time,” he said.

The judge told Syawal that the charges against him were serious, but said that while Syawal had been paid in full, he had a lengthy conviction in the past.

“For this particular sentence, jail time is mandatory. But if you go on like this, look at the number of years…if you go on this path, you’re looking for future corrective training,” District Judge Sean Ho said.

“I say this for your own good – corrective training, at least five years, at most fourteen years. Then there are more serious things, like preventive detention.”

He advised Syawal not to miss his two-year-old daughter’s formative years, and Syawal thanked him for his “words and reminders”.

Judge Ho allowed him to postpone his sentence until February 28.

Budget 2022 will help Singaporeans manage cost of living, support industries still struggling: Finance Minister
In a speech last week, Mr Wong said this year’s budget would address concerns about “more pressing issues” such as the cost of living and support industries facing difficulties due to COVID-19.

“We are pleased that the Budget is being carried out with a strong and stable economic recovery,” Mr Wong said.

“Against this backdrop, we know that some industries continue to face difficulties. For these areas, we will provide support. We will also help Singaporeans deal with more pressing concerns such as the cost of living.”

Unnecessary Hospital Emergency Department Visits May Affect Standard Of Care For Other Patients: Ministry Of Health

0

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Sunday (Feb 6) that hospital emergency departments are currently seeing a large number of patients, resulting in long queues and waiting times.

Most of these patients do not need urgent care, the ministry said, adding that such unnecessary emergency visits could affect the standard of care for other patients who do need urgent medical care.

The Ministry of Health advises the public to seek medical attention in hospital emergency departments only for severe or life-threatening emergencies such as chest pain, difficulty breathing and uncontrollable bleeding.

“This enables those seriously ill who need urgent care to be treated quickly. It also helps preserve our hospital capacity for those who really need urgent hospital care,” the ministry added.

Attendance at the Children’s Emergency Department at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and National University Hospital has been very high over the past two weeks.

The two children’s emergency departments have averaged more than 650 cases a day this week, up from an average of 450 cases a day in early January, the ministry said.

About 80 percent of patients, including those infected with COVID-19, had mild symptoms, did not require hospitalization, and were discharged from the emergency department.

“Among the pediatric patients admitted to the hospital, most of the hospital stays are not long, and they are discharged within two to three days on average. The proportion of children with severe COVID-19 infection and multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) is still very low, less than 10,000 one of the pediatric cases,” the ministry said.

“We urge the public, including children, to see their GP or a non-emergency 24-hour clinic.”

If an individual requires testing for COVID-19 or checking for symptoms of acute respiratory infection, they can visit the Public Health Preparedness Clinic (PHPC) for further evaluation. More than 700 such clinics are open after office hours on specific days, the ministry said.

There are also six paediatric swab centres that support paediatric swabs for children six and younger, four of which are open after office hours on select days.

They are: 24 Hour Family Clinic at Thomson Medical Centre, Raffles Specialists at Raffles Holland V, Raffles Children’s Centre at Tampines One, Raffles Youth Centre at Waterway Point and JEM and Serangoon The Center’s Thomson Pediatric Center.

Children aged five and older can also have swabs done at an urgent care centre (Woodlands Health).

An up-to-date list of GP clinics and their hours of operation can be found on the Ministry of Health website, the Integrated Care Facility (AIC) website, the Community Health Assistance Scheme (CHAS) webpage and the HealthHub mobile app.

Former Accenture Singapore Chairman Named SPH Media Group CEO

0

SINGAPORE: Teo Lay Lim, former chairman of Accenture Singapore, has been named chief executive of the Press Holdings media group.

She will take over from interim chief executive and veteran journalist Patrick Daniel from March 1, SPH Media Trust said in a media briefing on Monday (February 7).

SPH Media Group, which was spun off from Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), announced last year that it would transfer its core media business to a not-for-profit entity amid falling advertising revenue.

During her 30 years with IT services and consulting firm Accenture Singapore, Ms. Teo has held various leadership roles, including as CEO of Accenture Southeast Asia from 2011 to 2020.

“She is a seasoned business leader with a proven track record of building businesses from the ground up. Ms. Teo launched Accenture’s CRM practice in 2000 and Accenture Analytics and Accenture Sustainability Services in 2008 , these were still emerging areas at the time,” said SPH Media Trust.

Mr Khaw Boon Wan, chairman of the SPH Media Trust, said Ms Teo had “a keen sense of creating opportunities for business growth”.

“Above all, she is passionate about building and transforming people and organisations for the long term. The Group looks forward to working closely with Lay Lim on strategy to underline its vision and mission to produce quality journalism you can trust,” added Mr Khaw.

He also thanked Mr. Daniel for coming out of retirement as interim CEO.

“Under the new not-for-profit economic structure, he led the restructuring of SPH’s media business and enabled the newsroom to chart a bolder digital transformation journey,” Mr Khaw said.

On her appointment as CEO, Ms Teo said: “I am honoured to have the opportunity to serve as CEO of SPH Media Group at this exciting time.

“As we work to keep up with the ever-changing media landscape, I will work closely with my colleagues on this transformation journey to create trusted products for our always-connected audiences.”

Tan
