I’m a bit of a grindcore man myself. My youth was filled with pasting pictures of Pig Destroyer album covers and The Locust lyrics on my looseleaf binders that I brought to school — to the disgust of classmates and some lecturers of course, but I relished in being the non-conformist. Ah, such cringeworthy days. 

Today, grindcore remains a genre that’s still very much considered abnormal for being highly-niche heavy-metal music that has a relatively small but fiercely loyal fanbase. But thanks to Armless Dentist — a grindcore-gone-acoustic outfit — the genre is getting (some) recognition among the normies. 

Why though? It’s because couple Darell Sungkono and Claire Choo bring the brutality to basic things beloved by Singaporeans and seemingly everyone in the Subtle Asian Traits Facebook group.

This is a cautionary tale why you should never run under a gantry arm.

Stomp contributor Zarian was waiting to exit the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) on Wednesday evening (Sep 11) when he saw a girl chasing after a Foodpanda delivery rider.

I was on my way out of MDIS and having problems with my IU unit being read at the exit,” he said.

“I then saw this girl chasing after the Foodpanda delivery rider and getting knocked by the gantry arm.”

In a video shared by Zarian, the gantry arm at the entrance of the school had lifted to let the rider enter.

The girl had stopped and turned to look back without realising that she was standing under the gantry arm.

When the arm subsequently swung down, it hit her on the head.

She was seen clutching at her head in pain before running back into the school.

“The security guard came out and tended to her quickly,” said the Stomp contributor.

Online shopping has become increasingly popular with its ease of use and frequent deals that buyers cannot always get from a physical store.

Stomp contributor Jeremy’s father was happy to snap up a good deal for a 2TB solid-state drive (SSD) from SanDisk on Shopee but was disappointed and subsequently frustrated when his order was cancelled.

The photography enthusiast had paid $264 for the SSD. It’s recommended retail price was $690.

However, on Sep 5, he received a notification that the order had not been shipped yet.

The next day (Sep 6), he was notified that the order was cancelled and that his money had been credited back to his credit card.

Puzzled as to why the order was cancelled, Jeremy’s father messaged the seller, SG SanDisk (@sgsandisk), to ask what had happened.

A man went on an expletive-laden rant during a bus ride last Sunday night (Sep 8) for no apparent reason, even wiggling his buttocks at one point.

Stomp contributor Genre, who was travelling on board SMRT bus service 187 at around 10.30pm, witnessed the incident and sent a video to Stomp.

Genre said: “A commuter behaved in an unruly manner and was abusive towards the bus captain without any apparent reason while the bus was in motion.

“The man started his rant from Bukit Panjang and it lasted till the bus reached its destination at Woodlands Bus Interchange.

“He can be seen hurling vulgarities and making inappropriate actions in the bus which could have distracted the bus captain.

SINGAPORE – Hours after the collapse of a PIE viaduct in July 2017, professional engineer Robert Arianto Tjandra, who had been overseeing the design of the project, said in WhatsApp messages to a former colleague that the incident had been a result of a “design mistake”.

The text messages were revealed in court on Friday (Sept 13), during the cross-examination of prosecution witness Liu Xiayu, who was a former subordinate of Arianto Tjandra at subcontractor CPG Consultants at the time. Mr Liu joined CPG in 2015, but resigned in Feburary 2017.

Arianto Tjandra, 46, was the qualified person from CPG who had approved the design and supervision of the construction works for the project.

He is facing five charges under the Building Control Act and the Workplace Safety and Health Act.

The viaduct collapsed in the early hours of July 14, 2017, resulting in the death of 31-year-old Chinese worker Chen Yinchuan. Ten other workers were hurt, two seriously.

He became irritated as he felt his eight-year-old stepson was staring at him while he was making a drink in the kitchen.

Asking the boy what he was looking at, he walked over, grabbed him by the neck and lifted the child off the ground.

The man, 28, then slammed the boy down into a pile of clothes nearby, leaving the child in tears.

For ill-treating the boy, he was yesterday jailed for four months. He cannot be named due to a gag order.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Regina Lim told District Judge Sarah Tan that at least four months in jail was warranted.

“(It was) only fortuitous that there was no physical injury,” she told the judge.

Before handing down the sentence, Judge Tan said an appropriate one had to be meted out to discourage like-minded individuals from committing similar offences.

The court heard that the man was at home with the boy, the boy’s mother and nine-year-old half-sister when the incident occurred on Dec 3 last year at 9.30am.

The boy’s mother had shouted at the man when she noticed him grabbing the boy’s neck. His half-sister, who also saw what happened, had screamed, DPP Lim said.

You’d never know when your first aid knowledge will come in handy.

A full-time National Servicemen (NSF) put his skills to use when a fellow commuter on the bus he was riding suddenly collapsed, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

The passenger had just boarded bus service 241 at Jurong West on Wednesday (Sept 11) morning when he cried out and fell down.

The NSF rushed to the man’s side, lying him down flat on the ground, checking his vital signs.

While doing so, he asked passengers whether they had dialled 995 and kept asking if an ambulance was on the way.

When the man began frothing at the mouth and started to lose consciousness, the NSF shook him to keep him awake until paramedics arrived.

In a video clip shown to Wanbao by a bus passenger, the man appeared to be pale and weak. He also didn’t respond to the questions the NSF was asking him.

Singapore Civil Defence Force noted that it received a call for assistance at 11.40am that day, adding that the man was conveyed to Ng Teng Fong hospital.
