Angry netizens mistake Ramli Sarip's rendition as new National Anthem recording

0

[ad_1]

Before we dive into our regularly scheduled programming about internet outrage, we gotta make this very clear — the new version of the National Anthem is not the one sung by local rock legend Ramli Sarip.

The official new rendition of Majulah Singapura doesn’t change much from the old, except that it has a faster tempo, new voices singing the lyrics and a new instrumental performance by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO).

This new version would be the one that schools and other government institutions have to play out loud. Not the slow, wistful one that Ramli sang at this year’s National Day Parade.

Alas, people keep getting them mixed up. Since the new Majulah Singapura was released on Tuesday (Dec 3), netizens have cried foul about Ramli’s version, truly believing that his soulful rendition was the one that everyone would have to sing along to.

The 100m butterfly is Schooling’s pet event; he is the current Olympic record holder with a time of 50.39.

Schooling is also the defending champion in the event and Games record holder – his timing of 51.38 set at the 2017 SEA Games.

The 2016 Olympic champion has had a stranglehold in this event, also winning gold in 2013 and 2015.

This is Schooling’s first individual medal of the Games after only settling for silver in the 50m butterfly on Thursday after he was pipped by teammate Teong Tzen Wei.

SINGAPORE – Six Singapore Under-22 footballers are set to face disciplinary action after breaking curfew while on duty with the Young Lions at the  ongoing SEA Games in the Philippines.

The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) confirmed on Thursday (Dec 5) six players had breached the team’s code of conduct and added they  “were given a stern formal warning and will face disciplinary hearings upon their return to Singapore after the SEA Games.”

Sources told The Straits Times the incident happened last Sunday (Dec 1) night, after Singapore’s 3-0 loss to Thailand. The players allegedly returned to their base at the Century Park Hotel in Manila in the wee hours.

An internal investigation was conducted by the Singapore football team officials before the matter was reported to the SNOC.

ST has reached out to the Football Association of Singapore (FAS).

This is not the first time Team Singapore athletes have broken similar curfew rules at major Games.

If you grew up in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the name ixi:z would be a familiar one, even if you can’t pronounce it.

Along with streetwear brands like Fubu and Alien Workshop which gained a foothold in Asia for streetwear (remember those ultra baggy pants?) — there was ixi:z (pronounced “ick-sees”), which many may not know is actually Japanese.

Their brightly-coloured velcro wallets (those were the days) and slim pencil cases were among the most coveted accessories of the time for many secondary school students.

Singapore's 15-year-olds are second best in the world at reading, science, and mathematics

SINGAPORE – Singapore’s 15-year-olds have ranked second-highest in the world for competencies in reading, mathematics, and science according to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) run by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Out of 79 participating education systems from different countries, Singapore came in just behind China, who were represented by four provinces-Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

Held once every three years, 6,300 students from 153 public secondary schools, and 376 students randomly selected from private schools participated in the benchmarking study.

Key findings from the Ministry of Education (MOE) in their press release revealed students have shown significant literary improvement since the last PISA in 2015.

The MOE attribute this improvement to the increased percentage of students from English-speaking homes.

NTU student expelled after allegedly recording video of woman showering on campus

SINGAPORE – A teenage Nanyang Technological University (NTU) student has been expelled after he allegedly used his mobile phone to record a video of a woman showering on campus.

Chinese national Han Shiyu, 17, who appeared before District Judge Adam Nakhoda on Monday (Dec 2), is accused of insulting the 20-year-old woman’s modesty on Aug 12 this year.

He is said to have committed the offence at around 9.20pm that day.

NTU told The Straits Times in a statement that Han was expelled in October.

Its spokesman said: “The university takes a zero-tolerance approach towards harassment and takes all cases of misconduct involving harassment seriously.”

Earlier this year, in the wake of a Peeping Tom case at the National University of Singapore (NUS), an NTU spokesman had told ST that the university had strengthened its policies and procedures on harassment in January.

The NUS case created a stir after the victim, Ms Monica Baey, went public saying that the authorities did not do enough to punish a fellow student who filmed her showering.

Rae Yun of @theramengirl: How you can run a business and be a hands-on mum too

0

[ad_1]

You may know Rae Yun as @theramengirl on Instagram and are perhaps her customer too. She is the mumpreneur behind lifestyle online store Oh Happy Fry.

When her first child turned seven months old, Rae decided to quit her full-time job as an assistant marketing manager to run online business from home.

Oh Happy Fry, which stocks children’s clothing, accessories, toys and home decor from around the world, is also an outlet for Rae to push her creative boundaries.

“It takes strength and courage to walk away from a good career with attractive benefits, especially in the initial months when you’re starting out to build a brand. But an online business allowed me the flexibility to work from home and care for my child,” says Rae, who used to do marketing for brands such as Tangs, Goods of Desire and Dr Martens.

The huge risk she took paid off. From just managing one to two online orders from home a day, she now has an office and sends out hundreds of packages each month with the help of two part-time staff.

According to a survey carried out by Opensignal over a three month period from August to the end of October this year, subscribers to Singtel, Starhub and M1, three main telcos in Singapore will be happy that despite not having 5G yet, their service providers are working to improve their 4G experience.

Opensignal took some 71 million measurements from 54,443 devices during the survey.

Opensignal uses 4G Availability as a bellwether for the mobile network experience because of 4G technology’s inherent speed, capacity, and latency advantages over 3G. The more time users spend connected to 4G, the better their overall experience is likely to be.

CLARK, Philippines – Olympic 100m butterfly champion Joseph Schooling was handed a shock defeat by teammate Teong Tzen Wei in the men’s 50m butterfly at the 30th SEA Games on Thursday night (Dec 5).

The 24-year-old, who has won the event three times at the biennial Games, clocked 23.61sec in the one-lap race to place second. Teong sprinted home in a personal best time of 23.55sec to take the gold.

Schooling said: “It was a hard race, kudos to Tzen Wei, he did really well and had a great start.

Newly crowned 50m fly champion Teong said: “He’s my brother, we train in and out every day and I just got this one and he’s got many ahead of him. I’m just happy that Singapore both got on the podium.”

Singapore claimed three other gold medals in the pool.

Christie Chue won the women’s 200m breaststroke final in 2:28.71 while Elena Lee Pedersen claimed the women’s 50m backstroke title in 29.40sec.
