Coronavirus: Family of infected Bangladeshi worker here to receive $10,000 donation

SINGAPORE – The Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) is sending a $10,000 donation via telegraphic bank transfer to the family of a 39-year-old Bangladeshi worker here who tested positive for the coronavirus on Feb 8.

It comprises contributions from the worker’s employer Yi-Ke Innovations; The Leo dormitory operator Mini-Environment Services; and the MWC.

The worker, who was staying at The Leo dormitory in Kaki Bukit, was Singapore’s case 42.

In a Facebook post on Monday (Feb 24), the MWC said it has been “a distressing period of time for his family as he is the sole breadwinner”.

The centre had contacted his next of kin through his employer soon after he was hospitalised, and has been providing the family with updates on his condition.

“We hope that the timely updates could offer them some comfort and solace during this period of time,” the MWC added.

The $10,000 assistance package is meant to help the worker’s family take care of urgent purchases or payments associated with day-to-day expenses or other financial needs, the centre said.

Google Translate saves the day: SGH nurse opens up about frontline struggles

The coronavirus outbreak came like a bolt from the blue for most Singaporeans. But for nurse clinician Muhammad Syafiq Abdul Manaf, it’s something he’s trained and prepared for since he started working at Singapore General Hospital’s isolation wards six years ago.

Of course, that isn’t to say that life on the frontline has been a walk in the park.

AsiaOne visited the hospital on Feb 21 and the 32-year-old opened up about the realities and struggles of being one of the masked heroes caring for Singapore’s Covid-19 patients.

With the first confirmed cases hailing from China, one of the biggest challenges some of them faced right off the bat was communication, he said.

“For English-speaking people, if we say ‘I want to take a throat swab’ they generally open their mouth,” he explained. “But for Chinese-speaking patients normally it’s difficult to communicate.”

Faced with this curveball, they turned to Google Translate.

Another week, another magnanimous Porsche driver.

Last week’s accident between a Porsche and a cabbie was resolved in a wholesome exchange with just $1.

This time, a Porsche owner extended an olive branch to a hearing-impaired Grab driver who had hit her on Feb 20. Her only request was to have him send her daughter to class.

Touched by the exchange, the driver’s friend Muhsin Johari decided to share his story on Facebook on Friday (Feb 21).

SINGAPORE – There are no new cases of the coronavirus disease, said the Health Ministry (MOH) on Sunday (Feb 23), meaning that the total number stays at 89.

Meanwhile, two more have been discharged. A total of 51 have fully recovered since the first case was confirmed a month ago, on Jan 23.

Most of the 38 confirmed cases who are still hospitalised are stable or improving. Five are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

As of noon on Sunday, MOH has identified 2,812 close contacts, with 908 currently quarantined. Another 1,904 have completed their quarantine.

The ministry also provided more information on Case 89, a 41-year-old Singapore permanent resident, announced on Saturday.

He had no recent travel history to China and is currently warded in an isolation room at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID).

He first reported symptoms on Feb 3 and then saw general practitioners the same day and on Feb 7, 10, 17 and last Friday (Feb 21).

Later that day, he was referred to NCID and tested positive for Covid-19, the coronavirus disease, the next morning (Feb 22).

Narrow escape for family after tree falls on their car in Dhoby Ghaut

A couple and their young son had a narrow escape after a huge tree fell on their car in Penang Road on Saturday.

The uprooted tree was about seven storeys high and obstructed three lanes of the road, Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported yesterday.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it responded to a call for assistance in Penang Road near Singapore Shopping Centre at about 5.45pm.

“A boy was assessed by SCDF paramedics,” a spokesman told The New Paper yesterday.

Shin Min said the tree trunk was about a metre thick.

TNP understands it was a raintree and took about three hours to clear.

The family had just left Plaza Singapura and were travelling towards Cavenagh Road when the tree fell on their white Audi.

“I was travelling on the second lane when I heard a loud noise, and I felt something hit the roof of my car,” the driver, who did not want to be named, told Shin Min.

Seconds later, a branch pierced through a window of his car, causing him to stop immediately.

The roof was dented and the windscreen and left front window were badly damaged.

Grab drops cash advance scheme for its drivers and riders

0

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – Grab has dropped a programme offering cash advances to its drivers and riders, about three months after the Ministry of Law said it was looking into the initiative.

The Straits Times reported on the programme in November, which offered some drivers and delivery riders cash advances based on their previous earnings.

Following the report, some MPs had voiced concerns in Parliament about whether such programmes were a form of moneylending.

Grab piloted the programme in 2018. Those who took the advance could repay it from their earnings over about six months.

Grab offered advances that went as high as $8,900. No interest was charged, although there was an administrative fee that could go as high as 8 per cent of the amount advanced, according to pictures circulated among drivers and riders

A Grab spokesman said on Thursday (Feb 20) the move to drop the programme was to “explore improvements that can be made to ensure the needs of our driver- and delivery-partners are best met”.

Lawyer Lee Suet Fern disagrees with tribunal's report, will 'fight this strongly' in open court

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – Lawyer Lee Suet Fern has responded to a tribunal that found her guilty of misconduct in the handling of late founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s will, saying that she disagrees with its report and intends to “fight this strongly when it is heard in open court”.

She added that any member of the public can obtain the entire record of the closed-door proceedings of the tribunal from the Law Society.

“I urge the public to look at these and come to their own independent conclusions,” she added.

Mrs Lee’s comments were posted on Sunday (Feb 23) on the Facebook page of her husband, Mr Lee Hsien Yang, who is the late Mr Lee’s younger son and current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s younger brother.

She also thanked her lawyers, former Attorney-General Walter Woon, Senior Counsel Kenneth Tan and Providence Law, for an “outstanding and impressive defence”.

“I am deeply grateful to them,” she said.

The Straits Times reported on Sunday that the disciplinary tribunal had found Mrs Lee, 61, guilty of grossly improper professional conduct in how she handled Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s will. He died on March 23, 2015 at the age of 91.
