China says 41 missing after landslide

BEIJING – The number of people missing in a landslide in China’s southeastern Fujian province has risen to 41, Xinhua news agency said on Sunday, citing local officials.

Xinhua said earlier that 34 people were missing after the landslide triggered by heavy rain hit a hydroelectric power station that was under construction on Sunday.

Seven people were injured, the agency said, and President Xi Jinping had demanded that county officials step up rescue efforts.

In December, a landslide in the southern city of Shenzhen buried 77 people. The government has blamed breaches of construction safety rules for that disaster and a number of officials have been arrested.

TVB actress Linda Chung announces pregnancy on Mother's Day

When actress Linda Chung and her chiropractor husband Jeremy Leung held their wedding banquet in February, Hong Kong media were quick to speculate that she might be pregnant.

On Sunday (May 8), which was also Mother’s Day, the TVB star announced on social networking platform Weibo that she was indeed expecting a baby soon.

“Happy Mother’s Day! Soon, I will be entering the next stage of my life: Motherhood!” Chung wrote.

“I am looking forward and feel very excited. It is so wonderful when two hearts become one. I wonder what next year’s Mother’s Day will be like,” she mused.

The post was accompanied by a picture of the 32-year-old actress making a heart-shaped gesture with her hands. However, she did not say when the baby would be due.

Chung, who is also a former beauty queen, and Leung held a lavish wedding ceremony in Vancouver, Canada on Feb 27. The couple had quietly married late last year.

According to entertainment website Jayne Stars, the pair, who met through Chung’s elder sister, had dated for about a year before he popped the question.

Football: Totti plays 600th league game as Roma go second

ROME – Francesco Totti came off the bench to make his 600th league appearance for AS Roma as they beat in-form Chievo 3-0 at home on Sunday to climb to second place in Serie A.

The victory moved Roma up to 77 points with one game left in the race for the second automatic Champions League berth, one ahead of Napoli who play Torino later on Sunday.

Radja Nainggolan slammed home the opener in the 18th minute before Antonio Rudiger doubled the home side’s lead with a 39th-minute header.

Miralem Pjanic added a third when he was picked out by an excellent pass from the 39-year-old Totti and he finished calmly past Albano Bizzarri.

Totti, whose future at the club beyond the end of the season remains uncertain, was introduced as a 59th-minute substitute for Mohamed Salah and the club’s beloved captain received an emotional ovation in what may be his final match at the Stadio Olimpico.

Afghan road crash inferno leaves at least 73 dead

Ghazni, Afghanistan – At least 73 people were killed Sunday when two buses and an oil tanker burst into flames in a head-on collision in eastern Afghanistan, health officials said, in one of the worst road accidents in the war-battered country.

Many of the dead, including women and children, were burned beyond recognition and dozens of others were left wounded in the accident in Ghazni province, near the Afghan capital, one of the areas worst affected by the Taliban insurgency.

“The death toll has soared to 73, most of them severely burned,” ministry spokesman Ismail Kawoosi told AFP, warning that the toll was expected to rise still further.

“Many of the wounded have been rushed to hospitals in (southern) Kandahar city and Ghazni.” Kawoosi gave a sharply higher toll than other officials. Ghazni’s governor Mohammad Aman Hamimi earlier reported seven fatalities but his own spokesman gave a death toll of 50.

Afghanistan has some of the world’s most dangerous roads and deadly accidents are common.

At least 18 people were killed in May last year when a minivan overturned in the western province of Badghis.

And in April 2013 a bus hit a wrecked fuel tanker in the southern province of Kandahar, killing 45 people.

The World Bank in November signed off a $250 million grant to upgrade roads crossing Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountains, crucial trade links that are often closed in winter by snow.

That's not a rat! Rodents spotted at Springside Park turn out to be shrews

SINGAPORE – Residents of Springside Park in Seletar who thought they might have a rat problem can breathe a sigh of relief.

They do have a “furry little problem”. But the rodents that were spotted were revealed to be shrews, rather than rats.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Nee Soon GRC Member of Parliament Lee Bee Wah said that officers from the National Parks’ Board (NParks) pest control team had learned about the shrews after visiting the park at night.

“They’ve explained to some residents that shrews are harmless to humans, and eat insects like cockroaches,” Ms Lee wrote, adding that some residents requested that the shrews not be killed.

Ms Lee said that she had never heard of shrews before, and that NParks will keep monitoring the situation.

Shrews are small, nocturnal mammals with cylindrical bodies, short and slender limbs and clawed digits. According to website WildSingapore, they are often mistaken as rats, but can be differentiated from the pests by its pointed muzzles and small eyes.

The residents had good reason to be worried, however. In February, the National Environment Agency revealed that they had received about 6,700 complaints about rats last year, up from around 4,000 in 2014.

The problem came to light following reports of a rat infestation on a hill next to Bukit Batok MRT station in late 2014. More recently, 20 rat burrows were found along a footpath near a temple in Bukit Batok in April this year.
