'NASA scholarship': Malaysian student claims that he was scammed

[ad_1]

When one receives good news, it’s only natural to want to share it with everybody.

Especially when the news involves an astounding personal achievement like winning a prestigious scholarship from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Which is exactly what Muhammad Azhar Ali did. On April 30, the 20-year-old student excitedly shared on his Twitter account the amazing news that he had scored in the top 1 per cent of over 3.6 million participants in a 2020 NASA Artemis Student Challenge to design a spacesuit that would adjust to the Artemis 2024 mission to Mars.

His tweet was accompanied by a screenshot of an email supposedly sent by NASA representative Rene Holland to inform him that he had been offered a NASA Degree scholarship by the National University of Singapore (NUS), and a screenshot of his profile photo above the caption “Azhar Ali, Citizen Scientist” on NASA’s website, apparently taken with his mobile phone.

Former WP chief Low Thia Khiang out of ICU after 5 days following fall, now in general ward

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – Former Workers’ Party (WP) chief Low Thia Khiang has been moved to a general ward after spending five days in the intensive care unit.

In a statement on Tuesday (May 5), the party said the Aljunied MP is now likely to remain there for a few more weeks to recuperate.

“Mr Low’s family has asked us to convey their deep appreciation for all the good wishes sent to him for a speedy recovery,” said WP.

Mr Low, 63, had been warded in the intensive care unit after he hurt his head in a fall at home on Thursday.

Other Aljunied MPs, assisted by former Non-Constituency MP Gerald Giam, have been covering his duties in his absence.

Man scolds worker over 'long' wait to enter supermarket: 'You all not the boss of Sheng Siong, I pay money buy thing'

[ad_1]

A man was caught on camera losing his temper and scolding staff at a supermarket due to what he felt was a long wait to have his temperature taken.

Stomp contributor Anonymous took videos of the incident that occurred at Sheng Siong’s Block 660A Edgedale Plains outlet on Thursday (Apr 30), at around 2am.

In the videos, the man can be heard telling a staff member: “…Thought you serve your customer already mah.”

The employee then tried to attend to the man, who continued his tirade by ranting: “No need come… now I want to go buy my thing, I not come back to talk to you all. You all not the boss of Sheng Siong, very simple. This is not your money. I pay money buy thing one.”

The man can also be heard saying: “How long you want me to wait? Eh, now is not peak period, you know, for me to wait. And if you call somebody to come then somebody must come what. What, I don’t understand.”

Singapore's youngest Covid-19 fatality was declared virus-free a week before death

[ad_1]

When Salha Mesbee was cleared of Covid-19, her family thought that the worst was over.

Little did they know that they would receive tragic news just one week later.

Salha, who was Case 703, was declared brain dead and taken off life support on April 30, a week after she had been declared free of the virus, her daughter, Siti Noraisah Ali, told BERITAmediacorp.

With the 17 other Covid-19 fatalities aged between 60 and 95, the 58-year-old, who did not have any pre-existing illnesses, is the youngest fatality in Singapore.

Salha and her husband, 61, had travelled to Turkey before testing positive for the virus on March 26.

We try out Singapore's first affordable 55-inch 4K smart TV

[ad_1]

Now, I don’t want to say that an ongoing global outbreak is prime time to think about getting a new TV, but considering that you’ll be stuck at home for at least five more weeks (and perhaps even beyond that) you could probably use a sweet upgrade from an ageing screen still sputtering in the living room.

I mean sure, times are tough and income streams might be a tad bit unstable, but consider this: it’s a 55-inch smart TV that probably costs half the price of your mobile phone

Jurong West Hawker Centre to close temporarily as NEA seeks new operator

The current contract with a Koufu subsidiary will not be renewed after it ends on Aug 6.

SINGAPORE: Jurong West Hawker Centre will be closed for at least 10 months for potential renovation work, as the National Environment Agency (NEA) seeks a new operator.

Current operator Hawker Management, a socially-conscious enterprise under Koufu, will not have its three-year contract with NEA renewed after it ends on Aug 6.

In a media release on Tuesday (May 5), NEA said it will conduct a request for proposal to seek new ideas from operators to improve the two-storey hawker centre and market.

“As part of the RFP (request for proposal), NEA will conduct public consultations to gather ideas and suggestions from the community, work with stakeholders and potentially conduct renovation works to enhance the centre’s layout,” said the agency.

“It is thus estimated that JWHC (Jurong West Hawker Centre) will be closed temporarily after the exit of Hawker Management until it reopens sometime in the second half of 2021.”

Commenting on the impending expiry of its contract, Hawker Management said its “ideal performance standards” were not met.

Following HM’s (Hawker Management) appointment as the operator of JWHC in 2017, HM had seen to be putting in the necessary resources to bring vibrancy to Jurong West Hawker Centre and support the local hawker trade,” said the company in a media release.

“Despite HM’s efforts, the results did not meet our ideal performance standards.

“Koufu, as a public listed company, has an obligation to safeguard our shareholders’ interests, therefore we have made the difficult decision to exit upon expiry of the contract in August 2020 to focus efforts on other aspects of our business.”

Hawker Management said it remains committed to managing the hawker centre until the end of the contract term, adding that it will provide rental waivers for stallholders from June until the end of their tenancy.

It will also offer a S$1,000 relocation fee to eligible stallholders.

During the transition phase, NEA and Hawker Management said they will help stallholders relocate to available stalls at existing hawker centres and markets managed by NEA, or to coffee shops and food courts run by Koufu.

Existing stallholders will be offered to return to Jurong West Hawker Centre when it is ready, said NEA.

“For stallholders who choose to exit the trade and take on another job, or who may require financial assistance, NEA will work closely with relevant agencies to assist them,” the agency added.
