War of words on social media over Thai temple search

0

Justice Minister Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana has become a target in the fight between the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and Dhammakaya Temple after he and his wife’s telephone numbers were posted on pro-temple Facebook pages, with notes urging the public to call him about the issue.

The posting on Phra Sanitwong Chareonrattawong’s Facebook page, which was later shared by the “Single Gateway: Thailand Internet Firewall” page and many others, carried a photo of Suwaphan and his wife.

“Those who want to complain [over] the excessive use of power by DSI against monks can do it here. Here are telephone numbers of Suwaphan and his wife Rungnapa,” the post read.

“At night, if you cannot reach the minister, you can try his wife. Anyone who seeks missing justice can telephone these numbers only.”

A source said telephone calls were made to the minister and his wife, even after midnight.

Suwaphan has already discussed the issue with DSI chief Pol Col Paisit Wongmuang seeking an investigation into Phra Sanitwong Chareonrattawong, a core leader of the temple.

The monk could possiblly face a libel suit, the source said.

The DSI, which comes under the Justice Ministry, and the temple have been caught in a conflict as the former has tried to apprehend the temple’s former abbot Phra Dhammachayo, who is wanted on several charges.

The DSI recently raided the huge temple in Pathum Thani but could not find the former abbot.

The department yesterday also took to social media to respond after temple supporters flooded social networks to accuse authorities of using excessive power against monks and followers of the temple.

DSI officials took to Facebook Live to say that every step of their search of the temple had involved unarmed officers who had done their utmost to avoid violence. Details were given in Thai, English and Chinese.

DSI page also showed photos of officials giving alms to monks with the caption “We are also Buddhists.”

The agency has even issued notices before it pilots drones over the expansive temple compound.

On its Facebook page, DSI wrote: “Phra Dhammachayo is wanted on charges of conspiring to launder money and receiving stolen property. This follows the fact that the offender received a transfer of money embezzled from members of the Klongchan Credit Union Cooperative by its former executive. As the money did not belong to the fraudulent executive himself, it was not a donation – as the temple falsely claimed.”

The DSI had given the monk |opportunities to prove his innocence on several occasions, but he had failed to co-operate, officials said.

Tokyo police to wear video screen watches at Tokyo Marathon

0

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department on Tuesday revealed a wrist watch-type device to be worn by the so-called running police to prevent a terrorist attack during the Tokyo Marathon on Sunday.

The MPD has dispatched the running police since 2015.

Officers run the course while wearing a small camera attached to their heads, to detect terrorists who might be amid the runners.

The officers shoot a variety of footage, including areas along the marathon course.

The video is transmitted to MPD headquarters in real time.

This video can also be seen on the monitor of the new device, allowing the officers to check whether they’ve filmed what they want to.

On Sunday, officers including members of the MPD’s mobile units, will wear the device as they run with other participants and act as security.

Big sportswear brands in Seoul offering classes, facilities and even gear

0

Walking up the steep Gyeongnidan-gil, Itaewon-dong on an evening, you may come across people jogging toward Namsan.

The base camp for the group — sitting across the street from Philippines Embassy — is Runbase Seoul, Adidas’ recent attempt to make it easier for people to exercise.

For 3,000 won (S$3.73), you can rent out Adidas running gear and use the shower when you go for a run. That 3,000 admission fee also allows you to try out circuit training, beginner and expert training programme for marathoners or classes created exclusively for women.

Big names in sportswear are looking to promote not just their products, but to expand the culture of running and exercise to city dwellers.

Nike’s Nike+ Run Club, located in its Gangnam and Coex stores, also offers classes for runners based on their level of training. New Balance offers various fitness classes such as yoga and Pilates for women at its store in Gangnam.

“We hope to expand (the Runbase programme) to other regions, so that more people can experience the joy and fun of running,” said an official from Adidas.

“Most of the participants are office workers in their 20s and 30s. The number of participants in each class ranges from 10 to 40. Sometimes they form a workout ‘crew’ and exercise together,” said an official of Runbase Seoul.

This month, the workout programme on Tuesday evenings is circuit training, which trainer Jae Hae-hyun explains is “a course designed for the basic fundamentals of running.”

The comprehensive course, which starts with basic running around the room, moves on to footwork, sidesteps and shuttle runs, pushups, burpees, squats, crunches and other routines.

Photo: Korea Herald

For chair-bound workers, even the basic under-50 minute workout is physically taxing — some of the 10 participants sprawl on the floor or take a knee near the end of the class.

As the programme progresses, Jae urges the increasingly-fatigued participants to maintain focus.

“It’s no use to work out in a wrong form. Make sure you see your belly when you get up,” he advises a man doing crunches.

Some parts of the class, including the shuttle run, are conducted in pairs, which triggers some friendly competition.

“I think the best thing about working out with people my age is that I’m that much more motivated. These people have really been working out, and I’m pushed to do even better,” says 25-year-old officer worker Ha Keum-ran.

Ha used to exercise regularly in college but her new job is making it hard to work out regularly, she says. She likes the Runbase programs because she pays a fee of 3,000 won each time she visits. Joining gyms typically requires monthly or yearly memberships.

Her next goal is to try her first-ever marathon.

“Of course, I likely won’t finish. But it will give me a basic record which I can aim to improve in the future,” she says.

Australia picks Chinese actor as tourism envoy

0

Chinese actor Wu Xiubo has been appointed Tourism Australia’s Ambassador for the 2017 China-Australia Year of Tourism.

The appointment was announced by Steven Ciobo, the Australian minister for trade, tourism and investment, on Feb 21.

The Chairman of the China National Tourism Administration, Li Jinzao, was present.

The China-Australia Year of Tourism celebrates the close relationship between the two countries and recognises the importance of the China market for Australia’s tourism industry.

“This year promises to bring Australia and China closer and provide more opportunities for further engagement, be it in tourism and travel or more broadly in trade, sport and culture or social and academic exchanges,” says Ciobo.

“China is Australia’s most valuable tourism market, with the potential to be worth more than $13 billion (S$18.4 billion) by 2020. Last year, 1.2 million Chinese visited Australia. We anticipate this will grow during the China-Australia Year of Tourism and will continue to grow afterward.”

Recent initiatives to support two-way tourism between the two countries include the trial of the 10-year visitor visa; the open aviation market services arrangement which removes all capacity restrictions for airlines on both sides; and a new Beijing to Sydney service by Qantas Airways which was launched in January.

Fiona Xie dating rapper 14 years her junior

0

Is love in the air for local actress Fiona Xie?

The 35-year-old is dating 21-year-old Julien Leo, a model and rapper with local band KIN, Toggle reported earlier this month.

😍

😍

A post shared by Julien Leo (@jayouleeun) on Dec 25, 2016 at 11:30am PST

News broke when Leo, who is the son of fashion retailer Tina Tan-Leo, posted a photo on his Instagram account with the message: “Happy Valentine’s Day Baby!! To the memories we’ve made and to the adventures that await us!”

Although the photo has since been deleted, it wasn’t the only one of the lovebirds on social media.

Xie and Leo also posed for another photo shared by Leo’s bandmate earlier this week, apparently taken at a 21st birthday party thrown for him and his twin brother Brandon Leo.

Brandon has been romantically-linked to Austrian-Chinese model Fiona Fussi.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, Fiona and Julien have been dating for a few months and even travelled to Tokyo together last year.

Besides sharing photos, Xie has also shown public support for Leo’s band by sharing details of its official debut on her social media accounts.

Although he is only 21, this is not Julien’s first foray into the music business. In 2012, the Leo twins gained online attention with their K-pop covers, and even made it to the top 10 in BigBang’s cover song contest.

Saudi King to visit Indonesia in March with entourage of 1,500

0

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman will visit Jakarta and Bali on the Indonesian leg of his Asian tour next month (March), bringing 1,500 people in his entourage including 10 ministers, Indonesian officials said.

“This is a very historic visit for us,” Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung told reporters on Tuesday, adding that the King would be in Indonesia from March 1 to 9. He would spend the last six days of his trip “relaxing” in Bali.

Anung said Indonesian President Joko Widodo hoped the visit would bring Saudi investments of up to US$25 billion (S$35 billion).

There was no immediate comment from Saudi Arabia.

The last visit by a Saudi king to Indonesia was 46 years ago, when King Faisal came to the archipelago.

Indonesia hopes the visit will help further cement relations between its state-owned energy company Pertamina and Saudi Aramco, which are working together to upgrade the Cilacap refinery, Indonesia’s largest refinery complex, while eyeing other developments.

“We are targeting investments,” Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board chief Thomas Lembong told reporters.

Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, hopes Saudi Arabia will help to promote moderate Islam through religious teaching and exchange programmes for scholars, Anung added.

Indonesia expects to sign agreements with Saudi Arabia on increasing the frequency of flights from the Middle East to Indonesia and increasing visitor numbers.

The longest leg of King Salman’s trip to Asia this year will be in Indonesia, said Deputy Foreign Minister Abdurrahman M. Fachir.

“This also is a promotion in itself, and hopefully this will increase the numbers of tourist arrivals from the Middle East.”

Indonesia wants to use the visit to increase its annual quota of haj pilgrims, and win commitments to improve the health and safety of pilgrims and other Indonesians in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is a major destination for Indonesian domestic workers, but Indonesia imposed a ban on new workers travelling to the Middle East in 2015 after two domestic workers were executed in Saudi Arabia.

SINGAPORE – A 28-year-old woman who was allegedly drunk drove a stolen lorry along Orchard Road in the early hours of Tuesday (Feb 21) morning.

Facebook user Edwin Teo said in a post on Tuesday that the woman took a lorry for a joy ride from Orchard Towers.

According to Mr Teo, she hit his bus, as well as taxis and a few cars on the way.

Mr Teo, a 32-year-old private bus driver, told The Straits Times on Tuesday that he had been in his car with a friend near Orchard Towers when he saw a woman try to open the door of a car.

It was locked, so she tried the door of the lorry. The lorry driver had left the door unlocked and was out for deliveries.

She was swerving all over the road, he said, and hit at least five vehicles, spilling goods from the lorry on the road.

The driver returned and chased after the woman, getting into Mr Teo’s car. The police later arrived and arrested the woman, he said. The ordeal lasted for under 30 minutes.

The police told The Straits Times that they were alerted to a case of motor vehicle theft at 4.56am on Tuesday.

The brands behind the scenes at the Oscars 2017

0

Jimmy Kimmel will host, La La Land is likely to win big, and Justin Timberlake and John Legend will perform: these are the things that we know about this Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards ceremony.

But this isn’t just a night for the stars to shine: the Oscars are also a huge opportunity for brands and their marketers.

From who will wear what on the red carpet – designer brands work with stylists to dress and accessorize celebrities, even though one brand told CNBC it doesn’t know until the night whether their label has been chosen – to which type of tequila gets drunk at the after parties, Brand Oscar is big business.

CNBC takes a look at some of their marketing efforts this year.

The red carpet

This year sees Swarovski not only provide crystals for the awards set at the Dolby Theatre, adorning it with thousands of gems, but also launching a collection of “ethical” fine jewelry for the red carpet.

It has announced that actors Priyanka Bose (star of “Lion”) and Emma Roberts, who appears in the forthcoming “Billionaire Boys Club” movie, will wear pieces from its Atelier Swarovski collection, according to an emailed statement. The brand will collaborate with Red Carpet Green Dress, an organisation that runs a competition for designers to create dresses and tuxedos using “environmentally and socially responsible fabrics,” according to its website.

Meanwhile, Stella Artois is also working on a red carpet outfit to promote its partnership with charity Water.org, according to an online statement. Model and presenter Olivia Culpo will wear the Marchesa-designed dress, featuring glass beads made from Stella chalices during E!’s “Countdown to the Red Carpet” show on Sunday.

Stella is also running a three-part “Journey of a Dress” series on E! News’ digital network.

Brands behind the scenes

Swarovski is also a key player inside the theatre.

Its crystals have adorned the stage set for 10 years, and the brand has worked with production designer Derek McLane for the past five.

Last year’s set featured more than 110,000 gems.

Backstage, Rolex will be exclusive sponsor of the Oscar’s green room for the second year running.

Last year’s featured a “combination of classic style and superlative quality that are the hallmarks of both the Oscars and Rolex,” according to an online statement.

However the watchmaker would not comment on the cost of its sponsorship, or how it measured the return on its investment when CNBC.com contacted it via email.

Rolex has also set up a mentoring programme for emerging artists.

For those not lucky enough to attend the ceremony, Rolex is hosting parties in New York and London, with guests at London’s Ham Yard hotel being treated to a midnight feast and espresso martinis, while those in New York will celebrate at the Rockefeller Plaza’s 65th floor Rainbow Room.

The TV ads

Academy Awards broadcaster ABC has sold out of advertising slots during the ceremony, it confirmed to CNBC.com via email.

Ad spots are said to cost as much as $2.5 million (S$3.6 million) per 30-second spot, and brands including Adidas, Stella Artois, AT&T, GM, Hyatt, McDonald’s, Samsung, Verizon and Walmart are set to advertise during the ceremony.

Walmart is the only retail sponsor of the Oscars, and it has worked with Hollywood directors Antoine Fuqua (“Southpaw”) and Marc Forster (“Monster’s Ball”) and “Superbad” creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to produce one-minute films based on six items on a Walmart receipt: bananas, batteries, paper towels, a scooter, wrapping paper and a video baby monitor.

A teaser ad is currently running on its YouTube channel, with the full films to be released during the ceremony.

Its sponsorship is part of a multi-year partnership with the Academy, and a way for the brand to be involved in “cultural moments,” according to chief marketing officer Tony Rogers.

“This campaign is celebrating creativity and storytelling, something our customers do every day. A Walmart receipt tells a story as diverse as the customers who shop with us,” he said in an emailed statement.

Hyatt, meanwhile, will use its Oscars ad to kick off a global campaign, details of which are yet to be released, while Stella Artois will run its “Buy a Lady a Drink” ad with Matt Damon during the broadcast.

The parties

Elton John has held Oscars’ parties for 25 years, raising funds for his AIDS Foundation.

This year’s “Viewing Party” guests will eat dinner prepared by Gordon Ramsay while they watch the awards via telecast.

Sponsors include jeweler Bulgari and low-calorie beverage brand Neuro Drinks, while Chopin Vodka and Clase Azul Tequila will provide the hard stuff at the event at West Hollywood Park.

Over at the Governors Ball after-party, Diageo brands will feature, including Ciroc vodka, Johnnie Walker Scotch and Hilhaven Lodge whiskey, a brand created with Hollywood director Brett Ratner and named after his home that has previously played host to names such as Ingrid Bergman, Kim Novak and James Caan.

Chinese buyers set to finalise AC Milan deal March

0

The sale of prized Italian football team AC Milan to a group of Chinese investors is set to be finalised on March 3, two sources close to the matter said on Tuesday, in what would be the biggest Chinese investment in a European club. The deal, valuing the club at 740 million euros (S$1.1 billion) including 220 million euros of debt, was originally supposed to close at the end of last year but the Chinese buyers struggled to get final approval from Beijing.

Former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi agreed in August to sell one of his most cherished assets to an investment vehicle called Sino-Europe Sports Investment Management Changxing (SES), backed by Haixa Capital and entrepreneur Yonghong Li.

The investors are due to pay Berlusconi the outstanding 320 million euros and are also expected to inject a further 100 million euros into the team, as initially agreed in August, the two sources said.

The group has already paid 200 million euros in three separate payments to Berlusconi’s family company Fininvest.

Fininvest denied to comment on the date of March 3.

The full composition of the Chinese consortium is still unknown and is due to be revealed at the closing, the two sources added.

Football: Ancelotti escapes middle finger punishment

0

Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti will not be punished for showing Hertha Berlin fans his middle finger but must make a donation to charity, the German Federation (DFB) said on Tuesday.

The Italian coach had made the explicit gesture after being spat at by Hertha fans during Bayern’s 1-1 draw in Berlin on Saturday.

The DFB said it had closed the case against Ancelotti “on condition the Bayern Munich coach makes a 5,000-euros (S$7500) donation to the Sepp-Herberger Foundation”, the federation said in a statement on its website.

The foundation – named after the coach of the West Germany team that won the 1954 World Cup – is an association run by the DFB to provide opportunities for handicapped footballers and to help former prisoners reintegrate into society.

Bayern had publically backed their coach after his gesture, saying: “Essentially, we find emotionally understandable the human reaction that drove Carlo Ancelotti to make this gesture, as a response to this vile attack.” On Monday, the DFB had invited Ancelotti to explain his actions – the Italian had already admitted his guilt to German television station ARD after the match.

Tensions were high during the match, in which Bayern, whose players had been jeered throughout, equalised six minutes into added time.
