White powder found at US consulate in Hong Kong

0

HONG KONG – Police in hazmat suits entered the US Consulate General in Hong Kong Monday after an envelope containing white powder sparked a security alert at the complex.

Visa appointments were cancelled and members of the public queing to enter were ordered to leave as the consulate scrambled to react to the incident.

Uniformed police officers were also seen donning gas masks outside the building in the busy Central district of the southern Chinese financial hub.

Four police vans and a bomb disposal truck were seen deployed at the sealed-off main entrance.

However, the consulate later said the powder was not found to be hazardous.

“We can confirm that an envelope containing white powder was opened inside the Consulate General today,” a spokesperson for the US consulate said.

“The incident has now been resolved. Visa appointments for the rest of the day remain cancelled,” the spokesperson added.

“As always, our highest priority is the safety of our personnel and visitors.”

Olympics legend Mo Farah sends message of support to Thai rock star Toon

0

One of the world’s great long-distance athletes has added his praise for rockstar Artiwara “Toon” Kongmalai’s epic 2,191-kilometre run for charity.

Britain’s Mo Farah, who has twice won Olympic gold medals at both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, has posted a photo of himself holding a running shoe on his Facebook page “Mo Farah” and Instagram “gomofarah”, saying: “Keep running @artiwara. Leave all your records behind. The next step is a new start. #breakthrough #break2191k”.

The shoe he carried was also signed with a message “To Toon Keep on running!”

The 34-year-old Farah, who was born in Somalia before migrating to the Britain at the age of eight, is regarded as one of the great all-time athletes after doing the 5,000-metre and 10,000-metre double at both London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Thailand’s Mental Health Department director-general Boonrueng Trairuengworawat pointed out yesterday that Artiwara’s cross-country marathon from Yala to Chiang Rai highlighted five positive happiness-boosting aspects:

1. People coming together to do good things with their hearts and learning to give without expecting anything in return.

2. The example of self-esteem and admiration for oneself and others, resulting in encouraging people have more energy to live their lives with happiness and less stress.

3. The example of goal-setting and optimism about the future empowering people to have determination, willpower to achieve and eventually succeed despite obstacles

4. The example of encouragement from people around, such as family members, boyfriends and girlfriends, and friends and fans that gave the sense of unity and camaraderie to overcome problems and to maintain one’s focus to achieve a goal.

5. The benefits of exercise that help the brain produce endorphin, which is the body’s “feel good” chemical, making a person more cheerful and less stressed.

Boonrueng urged the public to apply these five happiness-boosting factors in their own lives.

Meanwhile, Dr Wiranpat Kittitharaphan, deputy director of the Mental Health Service, said the “Toon Fever” phenomenon also gave society a hero that inspired children and young adults to learn about the benefit of sacrifice to do good things without wanting anything in return and how exercise is good for health.

“This can create a good image in young minds so they follow such good things. You can already see some children bringing their piggy banks to give donations to the 11 hospitals that Artiwara’s run is raising money for,” Wiranpat said.

“Even those suffering from depression can be inspired by Artiwara’s run,” she said. Having a good role model to learn that people can do good deeds despite having no monetary reward was important to children and youths, she said, as this age group’s members were looking for examples and wanted acceptance from their peers and society.

Artiwara’s progress in the marathon can be followed on the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/kaokonlakao/.

Colombian TV show mocks Asians, even after soccer player's apology for racist gesture

0

A Colombian TV show racially discriminated against Asians by imitating its national football player’s actions.

Edwin Cardona, a Colombian football player, made a racist mocking gesture at Korean captain Ki Sung-yueng during a friendly match last Friday in Korea.

Ki later said, “(Dirty play on the field) sometimes happens. But racial discrimination can never be accepted.”

The Colombian player later apologised through the Colombian Football Association “for causing misunderstandings.”

Meanwhile, a Colombian TV show titled “La Kalle” is also accused of racial discrimination, with its hosts imitating Cardona’s racist gesture.

After showing clips of the football player mocking Asians on the field, the hosts of the show and their guests lifted the corners of their eyes — making a “slanted eyes” gesture — and laughing.

One of the guests even wore a face mask in an apparent move to mock Asians.

Korean nurses forced to dance suggestively for colleagues

0

The Ministry of Employment and Labor will investigate a university-affiliated private hospital at which nurses were pressured to perform a suggestive dance in revealing clothes during a sports event.

Nurses at the Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, claimed that they were forced to dance in front of some 1,000 co-workers and hospital officials during an annual sports competition, held October.

The case came to the light after a video of scantily-clad women seductively dancing on stage was uploaded on Facebook by a hospital whistle-blower.

Local media said the ministry — which has been investigating the medical foundation for alleged delayed payment of wages — added the case of the dancing nurses to its probe list.

The nurses also claim that they were coerced to work extra hours without pay. The ministry had been scrutinizing the allegations of delayed wage payment amounting to the sum of 24 billion won (S$29 million) at Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital in Gil-dong, Seoul.

Ministry inspectors are reportedly poised to make a field visit to the Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital and meet the nurses to take their statements.

Should the ministry find circumstantial evidence that the hospitals violated the Labor Standards Act, it may lead to a criminal investigation.

Single mother Stomp contributor XYW, who is from Malaysia, struggles to make ends meet and has to take up multiple jobs in Singapore to support her two young children after her husband walked out on her.

“I came to Singapore 10 years ago and am currently a Permanent Resident. My kids are aged five and six. My ex-husband, a Singaporean, left me for a girl from China,” said XYW, who declined to be identified over fears of losing her job at a restaurant in Katong.

The 37-year-old also does other odd jobs such as house-cleaning, but despite her hard work, she hit a bump in the road as her kids’ childcare fess were due.

However, a customer’s recent kind act moved her to tears.

XYW recounted the touching incident to Stomp: “Earlier this week, a couple who are regulars in the place that I work in, came in and ordered their usual soup and food, and one coke.

“I was clearing their table after they finished their meal, when the guy casually asked why I looked rather sad as usually I’m very cheerful.

“Previously, we had casually chatted a few times and he noticed that I am holding down many odd jobs and am working very hard as a single mother.”

That was when XYW revealed that she had gone to clean three houses that day and had just began her night shift at the restaurant, leading the customer to ask if everything was all right.

The Stomp contributor said: “I told him that my kids’ childcare fees was due and I was having issues, but I just had to work harder.

“He then smiled and asked for the bill. The total bill was $66.

“After I went to the counter to swipe his Visa card, I realised he had placed his Visa card and two $1,000 notes into the bill folder.

“Feeling puzzled, I thought he had made a mistake and accidentally left the two pieces of $1000 notes inside. When I passed the receipt for him to sign, I returned it to him.

“That’s when he told me something I will never forget. He said, “No it’s not a mistake, we have two hands, one is to work hard and the other is to help others.”

“I cried after they left. I wanted to thank him and I saw the name on his credit card. I would like to say my deepest thanks to him as it helped to tide me over for my kids’ school fees.”

Trump sparks protests as world leaders gather for Asean summit in Manila

0

UNITED STATES President Donald Trump literally stood out among the 20 world leaders who attended the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in Manila. He was the only one with a 13-foot effigy that Filipino activists mocked with all their might, amid the strict security laid out for the dignitaries.

Thousands of activists held rallies in the streets of Manila as the Asean Summit officially opened Monday to decry the participation of Trump, clashing with anti-riot police officers who tried to disperse them with water cannons and truncheons that left several wounded from both sides.

The activists earlier drumbeat their consternation against the US president with the hashtag #BanTrumpPH and produced the effigy that depicted Trump with four arms that form a swastika sign, symbolising “fascism, war and plunder.”

The four arms of Trump’s effigy, which was created by local artist group Ugat Lahi, could be seen spinning with a handgun, a missile, an excavator and a moneybag in each arm. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s face was hiding behind Trump’s legs. The two leaders are expected to hold a bilateral meeting today.

Duterte has been warming up to Trump after declaring “separation” from the United States, a long-time ally of the Philippines, and pivoting to China in a speech during his state visit to Beijing last year. But the flamboyant Trump was not a “welcome sight” at the Asean Summit in Manila amid mocking  banners waved by angry protesters.

“Trump is a fascist, racist, sexist and warmonger. He should not (have been) allowed to come to the Philippines,” said Neri Colmenares, chair of the militant Bayan Muna (Nation First).

The Philippines is the last stop of Trump’s tour of Asia that has taken him to Japan, South Korea, China and Vietnam. He arrived in Manila on Sunday and was also greeted with protests by activists.

Renato Reyes, Jr., secretary general of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (New Patriotic Alliance), described Trump as the “CEO (chief executive officer) of US imperialism out to wreck havoc on the world.”

“Trump today is the biggest threat to peace. He is provoking conflict in the Korean Peninsula. He wants to continue the “war on terror” in the Philippines and drop bombs on Moro (Muslims) communities. He wants to further open up economies of developing countries. He uses US military aid to prop up fascist regimes that violate human rights, in exchange for acceptance of US dictates,” Reyes said.

Trump is “an enemy of the Filipino people,” the activist claimed. The US president’s effigy was burned amid chants of “thrash US imperialism” by protesters including those from the United States, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and the African continent.

Some 60,000 police, soldiers and other law enforcement units have been deployed in the capital and surrounding areas to secure the world leaders and other dignitaries who discussed important matters on politics, economics and security.

While Trump was greeted with protest, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau received a “pop star” welcome by Filipinos. Thousands lined up the streets on Sunday when the handsome 45-year-old leader arrived. He later dropped by at the popular Filipino food chain giant Jollibee for a take-away fried chicken order. Trudeau also granted photographs with the crew and customers.

On Sunday night, Duterte, along with his partner Honeylet Avanceña, hosted a special gala dinner for the leaders of Asean and other world leaders including Trump and Trudeau. “I am deeply honored to host this rare occasion where a number of world leaders are gathered in celebration of the 50th anniversary of ASEAN,” Duterte said.

Other leaders in attendance at the summit included China’s Premier Li Keqiang, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Brunei Darussalam’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Laos Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith and Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres also attended the summit.

Asean is celebrating its 50th year with the Philippines as the host. The region represents the world’s third largest market with its population of over 600 million people.

“Throughout our Chairmanship of Asean in 2017, the Philippines has been guided by the theme ‘Partnering for Change, Engaging the World,’ which captures ASEAN’s resolve to effect positive change in the lives of our peoples and assert our position in the global economy,” Duterte said.

“Beyond our regional borders, we, as Asean citizens, are steadfast in building an Asean Community that is united by [our] shared history, values, and aspirations. We continue to harmonise the three pillars of the Asean Community by strengthening economic integration and building a common identity, while embracing our uniqueness and diversity,” he added.

During the dinner gala, world leaders and special guests feasted on Filipino cuisine such as ensaladang ubod at alugbati (heart of palm and malabar spinach salad), sinigang na maya-maya sa miso (soured red snapper in miso broth), bistek sushi (filipino steak sushi), charcoal grilled apahap fillet with tomato-mango sambal and budin (Filipino caramel flan).

Singapore to focus on cooperation against emerging threats as ASEAN chair: PM Lee

0

MANILA: As the incoming chairman of regional bloc ASEAN, Singapore’s focus will be to step up cooperation to build resilience against non-traditional and emerging threats and transform and integrate members’ economies to take advantage of new technologies and the digital revolution, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Monday (Nov 13).

Speaking at the 31st ASEAN Summit plenary, he said the terrorist threat in the region  has increased sharply in recent years, partly inspired by the earlier successes of Islamic State (ISIS) in the Middle East.

In May this year, Marawi, a small town in Mindanao in the southern Philippines. was taken by extremist militants and declared the regional headquarters of ISIS in Southeast Asia. The Philippine government officially declared an end to the siege late last month.

“ISIS has been trying to establish a caliphate not just in Marawi but also in other Southeast Asian cities,” Mr Lee said.

While congratulating the Philippines for ending the siege in Marawi city, he warned of an increased flow of returning fighters to Southeast Asia, as IS loses ground in Iraq and Syria.

Mr Lee urged law enforcement agencies to continue coordinating closely to exchange timely intelligence. He welcomed the Manila Declaration to Combat the Rise of Radicalisation and Violent Extremism, which underscores ASEAN’s commitment to address the issue, he said.

He also called on ASEAN to maintain unity and credibility on issues of regional and international concern, adding that the regional bloc has expressed “grave concerns” over North Korea’s recent nuclear and ballistic missile tests on a number of occasions.

ASEAN must continue to reiterate its call on North Korea to abide by its international obligations and commitments, he said.

ASEAN WELL PLACED TO HARNESS TECH OPPORTUNITIES

Given a growing middle class and a youthful demographic, ASEAN is well-placed to harness the opportunities of technology and globalisation to generate jobs and growth for member countries, Mr Lee said.

ASEAN is the world’s fastest growing Internet market, he said. “Our populations are internet-savvy, adept with technology and adaptive to innovation,” he added. ASEAN’s digital economy is projected to grow by 500 per cent to around US$200 billion (S$227 billion) over the next decade.

As ASEAN celebrates its 50th anniversary, members must strive to keep the regional group relevant, competitive and prosperous, Mr Lee said.

To that end, ASEAN has to push on with its economic integration efforts, against the current climate of anti-globalisation and protectionism, he said. He added that steady progress is being made towards building an ASEAN Economic Community, which could become the fourth largest single market in the world by 2030.

ASEAN has come a long way, PM Lee said, taking stock of its achievements.

“ASEAN has created a peaceful and stable environment for economic growth, fostered continued integration and cooperation and engaged external partners in the region while keeping the regional architecture open and inclusive,” he said.

He welcomed the conclusion of the ASEAN’s free trade and investment pacts with Hong Kong on Sunday, as he urged ASEAN to strive for high quality trade agreements that afford the “maximum balance of benefits for our businesses and peoples”.

He also said ASEAN must continue efforts to conclude a “high quality” Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement. RCEP is an FTA under negotiation since 2012 among the 10 ASEAN countries and partners which the organisation has existing agreements with. These countries are China, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and India.

LOOKING FORWARD TO DEEPER COOPERATION ON SOUTH CHINA SEA

Mr Lee also spoke on the regional issue of potential conflict amid competing claims for the South China Sea. He welcomed the collective efforts made by all parties to build mutual trust and confidence.

ASEAN and China completed the framework of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea and finalised the Declaration for a Decade of Coastal and Marine Environmental Protection in the South China Sea, Mr Lee said, describing them as importantsteps forward.

Tensions between Vietnam and China over the South China Sea came to a head in 2014 when Beijing moved an oil rig into waters claims by Hanoi. (Photo: AFP)

He added that he looks forward to “deeper and more substantive cooperation” between ASEAN and China on the South China Sea, including the official commencement of negotiations on the Code of Conduct to be announced at the ASEAN-China summit on Monday afternoon.

The Code is expected to lay down legally binding rules and guidelines aimed at preventing armed confrontation among countries laying claim over the South China Sea. Countries directly involved include China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.

“It is also important to continue pursuing practical confidence-building measures among our militaries to de-escalate tensions and avoid the risk of miscalculations,” Mr Lee added.

ASEAN should build on a joint statement to develop a set of common guidelines on how military vessels and aircraft should interact when they encounter each other unexpectedly, he said.

In concluding his speech, Mr Lee congratulated Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on his able and steady stewardship of ASEAN.

Mr Lee, who said that Singapore will also focus on building an ASEAN Community that is relevant and citizen-centric, said: “As Singapore prepares to take over the Chairmanship in 2018, we will build on the good work by the Philippines and previous Chairs to strengthen our Community.”

Shila Amzah wrote a song about her crush 7 years ago, and she's now engaged to him

0

Back in 2010, songstress Shila Amzah had a crush on her friend’s older brother. She thought that he’d never feel the same way so she encapsulated that feeling of unreciprocated love in a song called Sedar. It was included in Shila’s self-titled album released in 2013.

Last Friday, 27-year-old Shila held an engagement ceremony at her family home in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. The day also marked the first time the Asian Wave winner introduced her fiance to the public.

The man is 28-year-old Haris Idraki Elias, a Malaysian who works in the financial sector in London. It is the same man who inspired Shila’s song Sedar. Both of them were understandably nervous about going public with their relationship for the first time.

“Since we started dating three months ago, we’ve been really low-key about our relationship. I’m quite protective over Haris and I always wanted things to feel as normal as possible for him. To go public today, is such a big step,” said Shila who is currently based in China.

It was Haris who made the first move to reach out to the Mandopop star. He wanted to know if Shila was seeing anyone. So his mum met her mum to find out. When it was clear that Shila was single, he texted her in January.

Because of the distance – Shila, who’s based in Hong Kong and Haris in London – they would Skype and speak on the phone on a regular basis.

“I just wanted to get to know her. Once I did, I realised that she is a sweet, loving and kind person. We can talk for days. We won’t get bored of each other. When I’m with her, I cherish the time that we have because we’re both very busy people,” he shared.

Finally, they met face-to-face for the first time in October when Shila flew to London. Later in the same month, Haris contacted Shila’s father, singer ND Lala to ask for her hand in marriage.

GETTING HER FATHER TO SAY YES

Haris described the process as “nerve-racking”.

In 2012, Shila dated actor Sharnaaz Ahmad. Their relationship made headlines when ND Lala announced that he did not approve of Sharnaaz. The pair broke up and Shila was rumoured to have run away from home. She denied it and said she just needed some time to herself.

No one was more surprised than Shila herself when her 56-year-old father gave his blessing to Haris.

“Yes, I was shocked! As most people know, my parents are quite protective of me. I remember talking to my dad about Haris and he just sat there listening with a serious look on his face. Then I was like, ‘Oh crap …’.

“I told my dad that Haris is the one. He just replied, ‘OK’.” She added: “Then my dad asked me to stand up and he hugged me. He said he was very happy for me. We both started crying. To this day, it still feels like a dream.”

Haris is grateful that ND has accepted him with open arms. According to ND, Haris is a familiar face in his household as their families have known each other for a long time. “How do I feel about Shila’s engagement? Finally! I’m just happy that she is happy,” ND said with a laugh.

Shila and Haris plan to hold a solemnisation ceremony in April next year. “We can’t wait for our future together,” Shila exclaimed.

What does Haris Elias thinks of Sedar?

Lastly, did Haris know that Sedar was about him? Shila was shocked when this question was posed to her as she has never publicly talked about the inspiration behind the song. Well, she can blame her dad for sharing that information.

“Did I know? I think it’s quite well-hidden to be honest. I did hear it from a couple of people but I never believed it,” Haris replied.
