A private-hire vehicle driver who was beaten by a group of men during an incident in Geylang said that he was assaulted for merely looking at his assailants.

Almost 10 people were involved in the incident which happened on Thursday (March 15) at around 2.55am.

Videos of the fight were uploaded onto social media and became viral.

In the video, the victim is seen landing the first kick, before he was knocked out by one of his assailants.

Mr Chen, the victim shown getting beaten in the videos, spoke to Shin Min Daily News about the harrowing experience:

“My friends and I were at a porridge shop having supper when we ran into a ground of Vietnamese acquaintances, so we sat down and chatted with them.

“There were five to six men in their 20s seated at the table opposite ours.”

Mr Chen recalled that one of the men’s wallet had been hidden by his friend as a prank, and the man stood up to search for his wallet.

“When his friend returned his wallet, the guy threw it at us for reasons unknown. I looked at him, and he started hurling vulgarities at me.

“He taunted me in Hokkien, ‘what are you looking at? Let’s settle this outside if you’re not happy!”

To prevent an altercation, Mr Chen attempted to leave, but three men from the group followed him.

Said Mr Chen:

“Three of them came after me. Leading them was the man dressed in black. He was the one who threw the wallet at us.

“I kicked the leader in self-defence, and one of them punched me on my left cheek.

“I collapsed instantly. The three of them continued to stomp on my waist and kick my head, causing me to bleed.

Mr Chen said that he was left with a 10cm-long wound on his scalp and it has yet to heal.

He added:

“My friends later came and sent me to Singapore General Hospital (SGH). At the time, my white shirt was soaked in my blood.”

In response to media queries, a police spokesman said that a 22-year-old man was arrested for using threatening words and criminal force against public servants.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the man arrested was the same man caught on video assaulting the victim’s female companions.

Reporters later visited the suspect’s home and spoke to a young woman who identified herself as a close friend.

She told them that the suspect has remained to himself ever since the incident.

She said:

“He wouldn’t even speak to me these few days.”

A Facebook user, Daniel Choo recently posted about an infuriating encounter at Jurong Point, when a female driver allegedly cut the queue and took the family lot.

When confronted, the woman told Daniel that she has ‘money to burn’ while being filmed.

Footage of the confrontation was subsequently uploaded on Daniel’s page.

In the video, the woman tells Daniel:

“I got money to burn.”

She then boasts that the Mini Cooper parked in the family lot was not her only car, and retrieves a bunch of car keys from her purse.

Daniel then tells her that he was going to upload the video onto Facebook to ‘let everyone know, to which the woman replies:

“Fine, go ahead. Everybody knows I got three cars. Go head.”

She openly invites Daniel to take a photo of her car too, and Daniel says that he already did.

The woman elaborates her point:

“That does not mean your child got priority. (It’s) first-come, first-served.”

Daniel immediately rebukes her point, saying:

“No, no, it’s not a first-come, first-served. If it is a first-come, first served, why do they have this family lot?”

The woman writes the situation off as ‘stupid’, and Daniel retorts:

“This is not stupid. This is you being a very inconsiderate person.”

The woman acknowledges Daniel’s accusation, saying: “I am.”

She reiterates to Daniel the fact that she has three cars.

A security guard arrives at the scene and shakes the hand of the woman.

The matter is promptly resolved with the woman driving her car out of the lot.

In Daniel’s post, he also addresses claims that he was being self-entitled.

He writes: “I just wanna clarify, this post is not because we are “not happy” that we didn’t get the family lot.

“Yes, it’s just a parking lot, but still it’s a reserved parking lot for families.”

Daniel goes on to explain that these lots are designed to be bigger to facilitate young children and elderly parents boarding or alighting the vehicles.

Furthermore, items such as prams and wheelchairs should also be taken into consideration.

During the time of the incident, Daniel says that he had three children with him, including a baby.

Says Daniel: “We just want people to know the importance of the family lots to someone who needs it more than just anyone who is driving alone.”

BEIJING – Alibaba Group Holding Ltd said it will invest an additional US$2 billion in Southeast Asian e-commerce firm Lazada Group as part of the Chinese firm’s push into new markets.

Following the investment, Lucy Peng, who currently serves as Lazada Group chairwoman, will take over the role of chief executive officer, replacing founder Max Bittner, who will become a senior advisor to Alibaba.

Alibaba has previously invested $2 billion in the Singapore-based firm, bringing its total investment to $4 billion.

McDonald’s has responded to a viral video of a man yelling at its employees manning a Dessert Kiosk at Hougang Mall.

In an official statement, the fast food giant said that it was aware of the incident and believes that its employees do not deserve to be shouted at.

A footage of the incident taken by Stomp contributor Caren shows the man shouting at two McDonald’s employees.

Apparently, the man was upset that he had been asked to make payment before he finished placing his orders.

Rants the man: “You don’t tell me sorry because I very angry.

“What! I haven’t order finish. Money, money, money. What is this?”

Despite multiple attempts by an employee to alleviate the situation, the man only became angrier, demanding to see the restaurant manager.

At one point, the man takes out some bills from his wallet and slams the money on the counter, adding:

“What? My face, I got no money to pay for this ice cream?

“Money? I got no money to pay the ice cream? F***!”

In response to the incident, a McDonald’s spokesman told The Straits Times:

“While our employees strive to do their best every day to serve our customers with care, we also hope that any unintended misunderstandings can be resolved amicably.

“We believe that under any circumstance, our employees – just like any human being – should be treated with respect, and do not deserve to be shouted at in the manner as portrayed in the video.”

According to Stomp contributor Caren, the man eventually left the kiosk with an ice cream cone, but returned with it half-eaten and complained that it was not the flavour he had ordered.

Despite an employee offering to change the cone for him, he continued to make a scene.
