Elon Musk claims PM Lee 'would investigate' Singapore's Tesla situation

Yesterday, my family and I went to Turf City to look at pre-owned cars. Our 20-year-old Nissan March is dying and we had to replace it pronto. While looking at the automobiles, I went, “Maybe there’s a Jeep in here somewhere.”

My dad then responded, “Nah. You won’t find it in a used car store. Jeeps are the rarest cars in Singapore.”

If only he knew. Because Jeeps were never in the running for the rarest cars you can buy in Singapore today.

It’s Tesla.

The gist

Last week, we wrote about an IT-professional who’s the only legal person to drive a Tesla in Singapore. Joe Nguyen purchased a Tesla Model S from Hong Kong more than a year ago. Much to his dismay, he had to forked out a whopping $15,000 tax for having a non-fuel-efficient car.

A friend of Charged Hong Kong purchased his Tesla Model S in Hong Kong and shipped to Singapore 7 months ago after…

If you recall from our post, Tesla is an electric car that produces zero emissions, and is equipped with a smart driving system.

In an interview with Stuff, Joe explained his disappointment, “These are not [the] specs that I have seen on Tesla’s website, or anywhere else for that matter. And then underneath [the results from VICOM], there’s a conversion to CO2 emission.”

This is the first time the Tesla Model S has been tested for emissions.

LTA’s explanation

A Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesperson has divulged that the Tesla Model S was tested under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) R101 standards. It was reported that the electric energy consumption of Nguyen’s imported used Tesla car was 444Wh/km.

In an interview with Channel News Asia, the LTA spokesperson further added, “As for all electric vehicles, a grid emission factor of 0.5 g CO2/Wh was also applied to the electric energy consumption. This is to account for CO2 emissions during the electricity generation process, even if there are no tail-pipe emissions. The equivalent CO2 emission of Mr Nguyen’s car was 222g/km, which is in the Carbon Emissions-based Vehicle Scheme surcharge band,” and hence the Tesla S would need to be taxed.

Now what?

The long and arduous process that Nguyen went through has caused a major uproar in Singapore. Last Friday, 22-year-old Valdric Lim, who has caught wind of the situation, tweeted his frustration to Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk. The good news? Elon Musk replied to his tweet.

This was his response:

All hope’s not lost

Tesla is akin to the most popular clique in school. We want to squeeze in and be part of the exclusive gang, but we know it’s a silly wish and that it’s not going to happen anyway. Ever since the American automobile company closed its operations in Singapore, local car aficionados have been feeling left out. The obstacles Ngyuen went through is unbelievable, to say the least.

But now that Musk and our Prime Minister are joining forces to get to the bottom of it, there is a chance of a favourable outcome. The odds aren’t looking good. They aren’t looking bad, either. Hopefully with these big kahunas, there will be beneficial changes to the current framework.

5 passengers injured after bus collides with another along Orchard Road

0

SINGAPORE – Five passengers sustained minor injuries when the public bus they were on collided with another along Orchard Road this morning (March 7), The Straits Times reported.

They were stable and conscious when they were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said. It was alerted to the accident, which took place near Ngee Ann City, at around 11.45am.

The injured passengers were onboard an SBS Transit bus. The other public bus involved belongs to SMRT.

Ms Tammy Tan, SBS Transit’s senior vice-president of corporate communications, told The Straits Times that the operator was assisting with the injured passengers at the hospital.

“Our immediate priority is to ensure their well-being and to see how best we can help. All five injured passengers received outpatient treatment,” Ms Tan was quoted as saying.

“To the other affected commuters, we would like to apologise for the distress and inconvenience caused.”

Police investigations are ongoing.

Death of woman trapped in lift: Netizens deplore 'indifference' and callousness

0

BEIJING – China’s Internet users on Monday lamented the callousness of the country’s teeming cities following the discovery of a woman’s body a month after she was trapped in a malfunctioning lift.

The 43-year-old, reportedly suffering from mental illness but living alone, was stuck in the lift in the northern city of Xian in late January when maintenance workers shut off the power without properly checking if anyone was inside at the time, Chinese media said previously.

Her body was only found 30 days later as the crew left for the annual Lunar New Year holiday and did not return until March 1.

Chinese web users were shocked by the accident, deploring the indifference of relationships in modern society.

“I thought such things would only take place in the wild,” one user posted on China’s Twitter-like Weibo.

“But actually the crowded cities are nothing but just a forest of steel – we are surrounded by so many people and have so many ‘good friends’ in (online) chat groups but there are few that really have anything to do with you.”

Another user said she was haunted by fears of a solitary existence.

“I’m so afraid of becoming a woman so disliked, living alone and with no one showing any interest in me,” she wrote.

Those responsible for the incident have been detained by police, reports said, without specifying whether they were the maintenance crew or others involved.

China is prone to accidents as regulations and standards are often flouted and enforcement is lax, sometimes due to corruption.

Last July a woman was killed after she plunged through flooring over an escalator in a Chinese department store.

Media on Monday blasted widespread negligence in China’s lift maintenance industry and property management companies. A commentary carried by news portal jxnews.com.cn urged the government to strengthen supervision “to ensure such tragedies do not happen again”.

It also criticised the victim’s family for allegedly leaving her alone.

“The sick woman had no one to take care of her. It is impossible to understand why (her relatives) were so indifferent. How could such a mishap occur if she was looked after?” it asked.
