Singaporean creates hilarious memes for girl he cannot get

0

SINGAPORE – Guys, ever wanted a girl so much but cannot seem to get her to fall for you? You’re not alone.

Rejected, confused and unnoticed, Singaporean Goh Yong Wei, created a series of memes to express his unrequited love.

The 24-year-old posted those memes on his Facebook account in an album called ‘Xian Cha Bor memes’, reflecting his sense of humour through his sadness. Most of the photos feature him with a prop.

One hilarious meme, which had Goh posing in front of a laptop decorated with stickers, read: “All these stickers, but you never stick around.”

Another meme that pictured him with colour pencils and highlighters had the caption: “All these colour pencils, yet I still can’t colour your world”.

The photo album has garnered almost 600 reactions and over 2,800 shares on Facebook.

So, is Goh getting any girl’s attention with his memes? It seems like Lady Luck could be smiling on him.

On Thursday (March 30), Goh posted a status update on Facebook saying that he has about 100 “friendly” strangers chatting him up.

We wish him all the very best in his soul(mate)-searching.

12-year-old girl's throat slit by man in front of mother in Taiwan

0

Another woman has had to witness her daughter’s throat slit in front of her by a man in Taiwan.

This comes just a few days after a Taiwanese man beheaded a toddler in front of her mother.

According to Shanghaiist, this incident occurred yesterday (March 31) night around 8pm in Tainan, Taiwan.

In this case, the attacker, whose surname is Huang, was the ex-boyfriend of the mother and had been trying to reconcile with her.

The tragic incident occurred when the child was trying to intervene and stop the argument when Huang grabbed her as a hostage.

He slit the girl’s neck, causing a wound that was 6cm-long, 0.5cm-deep.

While the mother’s screams managed to attract neighbours’ attention to help, the man managed to escape.

The girl was rushed to the hospital where she received eight stitches and is currently recovering. The man is still at large.

On Monday (March 28), a 4-year-old girl was decapitated in front of her mother by a man who was reportedly ‘mentally unstable’ in Taiwan.

33-year-old Wang Jingyu had used a cleaver to repeatedly stab the girl, who was known to her family as ‘Little Lantern’.

Two separate assaults followed the decapitation, sparking fear among Taiwanese that there could be copycat attacks.

The first incident occurred when Huang Fon-fu, a policeman, was attacked by a 27-year-old man with a knife after he approached the attacker for “looking absent-minded”, according to a report by the China Post.

The policeman was stabbed and slashed across his head, back and right arm. He survived the attack and was reported to be in a stable condition.

Less than an hour after the assault, a cleaner, also known as Huang, was attacked by a man armed with saws.

The 23-year-old attacker reportedly told the police that he attacked the cleaner because he had wanted to “protect cockroaches”. The cleaner survived the attack.

Local police are still investigating the case.

Why do we redraw electoral boundaries every time we have a general election?

0

Reader Lin Yulong wrote to askST: “Why do we redraw electoral boundaries every time we have general elections?”

The Straits Times’ Deputy News Editor (Political) Zakir Hussain answers.

Electoral boundaries have been redrawn at every general election (GE) for several reasons.

The boundaries are determined by a committee appointed by the Prime Minister, who sets out guidelines – or terms of reference – for them. While the committee puts out a report on these changes, it does not go into detailed explanations on how it came about these decisions.

But observers have identified three key considerations behind boundary changes.

One major reason is population shifts as a result of new housing developments, such as new flats in Punggol and Yew Tee.

When the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee came up with new boundaries ahead of GE2015, it was asked to “take into consideration significant increases or decreases in the number of electors in the current electoral divisions as a result of population shifts and housing developments since the last boundary delineation exercise”.

This explains why a new GRC was formed in the north-west of Singapore – Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC – and why several areas of GRCs in the north-east were also redrawn.

A second reason is to address the political requirements spelt out in the brief to the committee.

For example, the Government had, ahead of the previous two GEs, promised to reduce the average size of group representation constituencies (GRCs) and have more single-member constituencies (SMCs).

So ahead of GE2011 and GE2015, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong directed the committee to reduce the average number of MPs in a GRC and ensure at least 12 SMCs.

Underpinning both the above reasons is the need for the 2.4 million eligible voters in Singapore to – more or less – have equal say in electing their MP or team of MPs.

For the 2015 boundary redrawing, the committee worked on the basis of a range of 20,000 to 37,000 voters per MP. It was also mindful that a GRC with fewer MPs should not have more voters than a GRC with more MPs.

Observers also point to political considerations in the way boundaries are shaped.

On one hand, opposition-held seats have tended to not have their boundaries redrawn to minimise allegations of unfair play. Thus in the latest exercise, Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC saw no changes to their boundaries. Even Potong Pasir, which had been in opposition hands for 27 years till GE2011, saw its boundaries left intact last year.

But on the other hand, some constituencies that have seen close contests have been known to be redrawn. For instance, Joo Chiat SMC, which the PAP won by fewer than 400 votes in GE2011, was absorbed into Marine Parade GRC ahead of GE2015.

But changes to constituency boundaries have affected fewer voters in recent electoral cycles.

Some of the more drastic boundary changes happened ahead of GE1988, GE1991 and GE1997 when three-member GRCs were introduced, followed by four-member GRCs and then five-and six-member GRCs in three consecutive elections.

Ahead of GE2011, some three in 10 voters found themselves in a new electoral division. At GE2015, only one in five voters were affected.

Colour, Colour Everywhere

There was food. There was music and there were 400kg of coloured powder imported from India.

Add 3,000 Indians to the mix and you get a colourful fiesta. They were there at a field in Tanjong Rhu on March 25 to celebrate Holi.

The celebrations were a joint effort by the Marwari Mitra Mandal (Singapore), Singapore Sindhi Association, Maharashtra Mandal (Singapore) and Singapore Gujarati Society in partnership with the Katong Community Centre (CC) management committee. The event was also supported by the Kamala Club.

Mountbatten SMC MP Lim Biow Chuan was the guest of honour at the event. He gamely had his face and clothing smeared with the coloured powder.

According to Marwari Mitra Mandal president Santosh Kumar Tibarewala, 64, the coloured powder – made of corn flour – was imported from India.

“The Festival of Holi has (an) ancient origin and celebrates the triumph of good over bad. Holi Mela 2016 (brings) together the different communities and celebrates the importance of racial harmony in Singapore,” Mr Lim, who is also Deputy Speaker of Parliament, was quoted by The Straits Times as saying.

Marwari Mitra Mandal (Singapore).

Deputy high commisioner of India to Singapore Paramita Tripathi and first secretary (commerce) Pradyumn Tripathi were also present.

There were many colourful cultural programmes performed by community groups and when hit Bollywood music was played, the crowd had a great time dancing to the beat.

Earlier, on March 22, the Marwari Mitra Mandal and Singapore Gujarati Society jointly organised the Holika Dahan at the courtyard of Sri Sivan Temple Geylang East. They lit a pyre to signify Holika Dahan. The ritual symbolises the victory of good over evil.

Those present gathered around the fire and prayed.
