Ferguson calls on United fans to rally behind Van Gaal

0

Alex Ferguson has urged Manchester United supporters to get behind under-fire manager Louis van Gaal despite the side struggling to avoid a third hugely disappointing campaign since the all-conquering Scot retired.

United are sixth in the Premier League and face strong competition from West Ham United and bitter rivals Manchester City to clinch fourth place, the final Champions League spot, with eight games remaining.

The Red Devils are 16 points behind leaders Leicester City and the FA Cup appears to be their only hope of silverware this season despite heavy off-season investment, but they face a daunting quarter-final replay at West Ham on April 13.

Ferguson pointed out the host of injuries Van Gaal has had to deal with throughout the season, while also trying to integrate their summer additions into the squad. “It is dead easy to be critical. You have to be realistic about some things. The number of injuries he has had… if you have players missing of that calibre it has to have an impact on the team,” the club’s most successful manager told British media. “The other aspect which is always easy to forget, there are five new players in their first season at United and two are young players in (Anthony) Martial and Memphis (Depay), and their promise is good. “You have to have some patience being a Manchester United fan and they have shown that over the years; in Matt Busby’s time, in my time.” Van Gaal has brought through a number of academy players this term, such as striker Marcus Rashford, who has netted five times in eight appearances, and Ferguson has tipped the 18-year-old for greater things. “He’s given nine young players their debut – I think the future is good. Rashford is an example of what I think is Manchester United… Rashford is a sensation and one of the best in years,” Ferguson said.

Van Gaal’s side host 12th-placed Everton at Old Trafford in the league on Sunday.

Myanmar army MPs slam bill to create Suu Kyi 'advisor' role

0

Myanmar military MPs on Friday said a plan to bolster Aung San Suu Kyi’s power with a special advisory role was unconstitutional, as the new civilian government tussled with the army just days after taking office.

The Southeast Asian nation was dominated by the military for more than half a century until Wednesday when Suu Kyi and her pro-democracy party took power.

The Nobel laureate, whose party secured a landslide election win in November, has vowed to rule the country despite a constitutional block on her becoming president.

In a surprise early act of parliamentary business by the new government, Suu Kyi’s party proposed a bill to grant her a special “state counsellor” position.

If passed it would give the 70-year-old a steering role over parliament, buttressed by the four ministerial posts she already holds in the new cabinet.

In a sign of early turbulence between her party and the still hugely influential army, military MPs called the move unconstitutional in an upper house debate Friday that saw the bill pass its first legislative hurdle.

Colonel Myint Swe raised fears the plan would place the “president and the advisor at the same level”.

“This is in opposition to the constitution. So I would like to suggest the bill be amended according to the constitution,” he told lawmakers.

Another army lawmaker, Colonel Hla Win Aung, also decried the naming of Suu Kyi in the bill and warned it could “destroy” the charter’s balance of power between the legislature, executive and judiciary.

The army is reserved a quarter of all parliamentary seats by a charter they scripted.

The NLD’s huge election win gave it a sweeping majority in the legislature, so the bill passed a vote in the upper house, but still needs to be approved in the lower house and combined parliament.

Suu Kyi is the head of the National League for Democracy party and the figurehead of its near 30-year struggle to end military domination.

She is barred from the presidency by a clause in the junta-drafted charter disqualifying those with foreign close relatives. Her late husband and two sons are British.

She has pledged to rule through her longtime friend and confidante Htin Kyaw, who was sworn in as president Wednesday.

But observers have raised concerns over how her novice government will tackle mammoth challenges in a nation scarred by decades of repressive and economically-destructive army rule.

Suu Kyi is taking on a huge workload in the new administration, running the ministries of foreign affairs, education, energy and the president’s office.

The role outlined in the new bill, which mentions Suu Kyi by name, would give her a budget and authority to conduct any meetings deemed necessary.

Toddler's fingers severed after running backwards up escalator in China

0

A one-year-old girl lost several fingers after an accident on the escalator in a shopping mall in China.

According to AsianTown, surveillance footage from the shopping mall in Beijing showed the toddler going down the escalator with her grandparents.

As the elderly couple got off the escalator and continued walking forward, the child ran back towards it.

She subsequently ran onto the stairs and fell forward, placing both hands on a step.

The escalator’s automatic emergency stop mechanism was activated, but it was too late.

The clip shows the horrified grandparents holding the girl while blood dripped from her hands.

She was rushed to hospital while rescuers spent more than an hour dismantling the escalator to retrieve the girl’s severed fingers.

A doctor said it would take six to 10 hours of surgery to reattach the girl’s fingers.

It is unclear whether she will gain full function of her fingers after the operation.

This incident comes after a recent spate of incidents involving children and escalators.

On Feb 8 this year, four-year-old Dzil Mikhail Nasaruddin’s left foot was crushed by an escalator at the KL Sentral train station in Malaysia.

Another four-year-old boy died after he was caught between the escalator’s handrail and the ground, at a train station in Chongqing, China on Oct 8 last year.

The toddler died on the way to the hospital.

Bojan Hodak wants S'pore national team coaching job

0

He was passed over for the Malaysia national team job in January, with Ong Kim Swee getting the nod for “having more experience with international matches”.

Bojan Hodak now wants to be Singapore coach, and believes he can deliver more than a big-name foreign coach.

Speaking to The New Paper yesterday, Hodak said: “I have not met anyone from the FAS (Football Association of Singapore) officially on this but, yes, I am interested in the Singapore job.”

The former Johor Darul Ta’zim and Kelantan coach is in Singapore for a family holiday.

The New Paper understands that his resume has already been sent to FAS officials by a third party.

Previous Singapore coach Bernd Stange oversaw his last game in charge when the Lions fell 2-1 to Afghanistan in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday and the FAS is in the midst of looking for a replacement.

“I’m not sure what its (FAS) plan is – if it is looking for a local coach or a foreign coach – but, if it does decide to bring in a foreign coach, I think I can bring something to the table,” asserted the 44-year-old Croat, who comes with impressive credentials.

Hodak, who played in the S.League in the 1990s, guided Kelantan to the Malaysian Super League (MSL), FA Cup and Malaysia Cup treble in a stunning triumph in 2012.

Kelantan retained the FA Cup the following year, but were pipped to the league title by a V Sundramoorthy-led LionsXII side.

Moving south to Johor Darul Ta’zim in 2014, Hodak won the MSL title at the first time of asking, with Singapore international midfielder Hariss Harun a key part of the team.

Hodak has also served as head coach of Cambodian side Phnom Penh Crown and assistant coach at Chinese club Shandong Luneng.

CULTURE

“Understanding the culture of a place, the good and bad habits in its football, this is a job that takes one year for a new foreign coach. He will start thinking about opponents only in his second year,” said Hodak, who first came to the region in 1997 when he turned out for Balestier Central in the S.League.

“But I know football in this region, I know Singapore football.”

Hodak also turned out for another Singapore club in the late 1990s – Jurong FC, alongside current Tampines Rovers coach Sundram.

The duo have remained friends from their time at Jurong, and even as rival coaches on the touchline.

Several in the football fraternity here have called for a local coach to helm the Lions, with Sundram and Fandi Ahmad at the top of their wish list.

Others believe a top foreign name should get the job, and help groom a local coach to eventually take over.

While all of Hodak’s time spent in the region still does not qualify him as a local, he sees the real need for local knowledge.

“I’ve been around the region, to Cambodia and China too, and there are not many big-name coaches who become successful,” he said.

“You must understand the football culture of a place first.”

Going undercover behind bars

0

Would you give up 60 days of freedom to be locked up with criminals in jail? That is what seven innocent “undercover” participants did in the US for a TV show.

A new docu-series, 60 Days In, shows them entering the dangerous world of incarceration at the Clark County Jail in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in an effort to expose internal issues and illegal activity.

They were handpicked by the jail’s Sheriff Jamey Noel, who devised this experiment following a rise in vice and corruption.

These volunteers – two women and five men – lived among the facility’s general population for 60 days without officers, fellow inmates or staff knowing their secret, while around-the-clock cameras captured what really happens behind bars.

60 Days In premieres on April 9 at 9pm on Crime + Investigation Network (CI) (StarHub TV Ch 403).

The New Paper caught up with one of the men, Zac from Tennessee, over the phone yesterday, but his full name, age and exact location were not disclosed due to “sensitivity” issues.

The former military man was so serious about his mission, he left his wife and newborn son for two months in exchange for a unique education in criminal psychology and the jail system, which he hopes could prepare him for a career in law enforcement – he wants to be a Drug Enforcement Administration agent.

He said: “The biggest eye-opener for me was that there were several people in there who aren’t necessarily bad people – they just happen to have made a bad choice.”

He added that although he did meet friendly individuals, he also got involved in some sticky situations that could have been dangerous.

ALMOST BEATEN UP

In one episode, he narrowly escaped being beaten up after calling an inmate “b****”, a crucial mistake for which he quickly backtracked and apologised.

In 2009, Zac was a combat engineer in the US Marine Corps Reserve and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010.

“My time there was tougher, hands down.

“In Afghanistan, you don’t know who the bad guy is, but in jail you pretty much know that everybody in there is willing to break the law, so you treat them all the same.

“In Afghanistan, you have to treat everyone like your friend until they prove (to be) otherwise,” he said.

MYTHS DEBUNKED

Zac gave his view on five common myths about prison life that we commonly see portrayed on the small screen in popular shows like Prison Break, Orange Is the New Black and Oz.

MYTH 1: Prison guards can be just as corrupt and violent as inmates

“From what I saw, the guards were held to a very strict standard and they have to abide by the law.

“They did not allow themselves to be brought to the level of the inmates so I would say this is not true. They take an oath just like any other officer takes to uphold the law and protect the people around them.”

MYTH 2: Food in jail is terrible

“Having served in the military, I’m used to eating really bad food, so to me, having three meals a day was really good for the situation I was in.

“The food was pretty tasty and most of the inmates I talked to said that the food in that particular jail is better than most jails around. So I think I got lucky.”

MYTH 3: Inmates get stabbed all the time with shivs (a knife-like weapon)

“There is definitely violence between inmates, but generally, the guards do a pretty good job of keeping anything that can be used as a weapon away from them.

“Generally, people don’t get stabbed on a daily or weekly basis, but it is dangerous and there are fights quite often, but they happen without the use of weapons.”

MYTH 4: You’re pretty much dead if you don’t join a gang

“You don’t have any protection if you don’t join a gang.

“Even if it’s just becoming a group of friends to protect each other, without actually calling yourself a gang, it’s tough to make it through your time in jail alone without having someone watching your back.

“There are definitely inmates in each section of the jail who basically have placed themselves in a position of authority and pretty much run things and decide who gets punished or what happens to certain inmates. The way they get this status sometimes is gang-related or because they’ve been there so long so they know how the system works… so they gain that level of respect from other inmates. There’s definitely a pecking order.”

MYTH 5: Inmates get raped by other inmates

“In my experience, I can’t say, because I didn’t see any. I don’t know if they did occur while I was there.”

This fish has been dating diver for 25 years

0

For 25 years, an Asian sheepshead wrasse living off the coast of Japan has been greeting diver Hiroyuki Arakawa whenever he goes to tend an underwater Shinto shrine near Tateyama in Chiba prefecture.

Mr Arakawa runs a dive shop near Hasama Underwater Park and manages the shrine in the park.

He consistently reports his meetings with the friendly fish, named Yoriko, on his Facebook page, Inhabitat reported.

Mr Arakawa sometimes greets Yoriko with a kiss when they meet. Yoriko also turns up from time to time when Mr Arakawa brings divers to see the shrine.

In case you’re wondering, the underwater shrine is a branch of Sunosaki-jinja on Cape Sunosaki near Tateyama. It was built about 20 years ago, and is 12m underwater. As expected, it’s visited by divers.
