Xi told to resign, has well-being threatened

0

TOKYO – In a fresh sign of the bitter power struggle going on in China, an explosive open letter appeared briefly on a state-sanctioned website calling for President Xi Jinping to resign over economic mismanagement.

The letter was not signed. It was posted by Wujie News in early March, shortly before the National People’s Congress, China’s parliament, kicked off its annual meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Xi also helms the Chinese Communist Party. The highly unusual public lambasting blamed Xi for China’s slowing economy, now the world’s second-largest, and called for him to resign from all party and state leadership posts.

It did not start out this way for Xi, who became president a little more than three years ago and launched a sweeping anti-corruption campaign to wide acclaim.

The campaign, however, quickly became a hammer that Xi has wielded against political foes and to consolidate power.

Three employees appear in court over India flyover collapse

0

Three employees of the Indian construction firm building a flyover that collapsed appeared in court Saturday facing four initial charges including murder, a public prosecutor said, as the death toll rose to 26.

The three appeared at the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Kolkata after being arrested Friday over the disaster, which saw a 100-metre section of the flyover crash down onto a street below, crushing pedestrians and vehicles.

All the accused were produced in court today. The charges against the accused are conspiracy, attempt to murder, murder and mischief,” Pijush Kanti Mondal, chief public prosecutor, told AFP.

“In the case of murder, (if convicted) they can face life imprisonment or a death sentence,” Mondal said.

The three, who include one senior employee and an engineer, have been remanded in police custody for nine days, the prosecutor added.

Five other staff were detained for questioning Friday over the tragedy, as police sealed off the Kolkata office of IVRCL, the contractor behind the ill-fated construction project in West Bengal state.

Although officials have ruled out the chance of finding any more survivors under the rubble, a rescue operation continued Saturday at the site where blocks of concrete and twisted girders lay strewn.

The death toll rose to 26 after rescuers found the body of a truck driver’s assistant lying crushed under the rubble, Kolkata police joint commissioner Debasish Boral said.

The West Bengal government has ordered an investigation into the state agency responsible for infrastructure and construction over how the project came to be approved.

Police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the firm while Derek O’Brien, a state lawmaker, has said the company had been blacklisted in other states and had a “bad reputation”.

Construction of the two-kilometre-long flyover began in 2009 and was supposed to be completed within 18 months, but suffered a series of hold-ups.

IVRCL has denied responsibility for the disaster in the capital of West Bengal state. A company representative infuriated victims on Thursday when he described the disaster as an “act of God”.

Authorities initially struggled to get cranes and other large machinery through the narrow streets of Burrabazar, one of the oldest and most congested parts of the city, to reach the accident site.

On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi, the vice-president of the opposition Congress party, visited the site and met with injured victims recuperating at a city hospital.

The disaster is the latest in a string of deadly construction accidents in India, where enforcement of safety rules is weak and substandard materials are often used.

It comes at a sensitive time for West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose centre-left Trinamool Congress party is seeking re-election.

Banerjee has blamed the previous state government under which the flyover project was started, but has herself faced criticism over the beleaguered construction project.

Voting in the West Bengal elections begins on Monday and will be held in five phases lasting a month.

Football: Milan salute Honda, but doubts remain over future

0

AC Milan have praised the model professionalism of Keisuke Honda although doubts remain over whether the Japan midfielder will extend his contract at the club beyond 2017.

A string of solid performances for Milan in recent months has underlined Honda’s value to the struggling Serie A giants as they battle to qualify for a place in Europe next year.

But the 29-year-old’s future in Italy remains up in the air, with reports Honda wants to extend his business of children’s football schools in Japan to the United States.

Japan international Honda’s deal at Milan expires in June 2017 and the club insist they are focusing first on the players whose deals with the club expire in the coming months.

“There is no rush to renew,” CEO Adriano Galliani told the club’s website www.acmilan.com.

“It’s rare that Milan renew a contract a long time before it expires. So it’s not the moment to talk about Honda’s contract.” Honda travelled to California last December as he reportedly pursues his dream of extending his football school business to the States, telling Fox Sports: “I wasn’t talented when I was young. I had huge dreams to play for AC Milan and for big clubs in the world when I was young.

“I believe that most children can reach their goals if they train with our philosophy, with our training programs.” But Galliani hinted Honda, who signed for Milan in 2013, could yet remain with the club beyond his existing deal.

“Honda has never asked to leave Milan. He is happy in the city of Milan and at the club. I guarantee it,” said Galliani.

“Forget everything that is written in the Italian papers. A month ago I met up with Keisuke’s brother, who is his agent, and there are no problems.

“We are very happy with him. He is a model professional. The Japanese are like that. They are soldiers, they are precise, punctual, professional. They always give 100%.

“No one at the club has a bad word to say about him. He may play one match well and another one not as well, because it’s hard to always be at your best over the course of the season, but you can rest assured he will always give his all.” However Milan are now set to miss out on the Champions League for the third consecutive season, and Honda could look for a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Atalanta, Milan sit in sixth place, 21 points points behind leaders Juventus and 11 points behind Roma, who sit in the third and last Champions League qualifying place.

Realistically, Sinisa Mihajlovic’s men are now focusing on qualifying for next season’s Europa League but are still six points behind direct rivals Fiorentina and Inter Milan.
