Netizens point out how a bend at Jalan Anak Bukit Flyover is an accident-prone stretch

Last week, a thread on the Singapore subreddit highlighted how a certain stretch of road along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) appears to be an area plagued by traffic accidents.

A bend along the Jalan Anak Bukit Flyover has seen an unusually frequent rate of skidding vehicles, according to several footages recorded since earlier this year.

Multiple drivers, when driving towards Sherwood Towers on the flyover, have lost control of their vehicles when travelling up the ramp in both wet and dry road conditions.

Just this year alone, there have been eight videos highlighting accidents along that particular stretch — and these are just the ones that are caught on camera.

Singapore Airlines on Wednesday reported a $1.123 billion first-quarter net loss after drastically cutting capacity due to the decline in demand and travel restrictions associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

The net loss compared with a $111 million profit in the three months ending June 30 the prior year.

Revenue plunged 79.3 per cent to $851 million during the quarter, the airline said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines this month had warned it would report a material operating loss in the first quarter, including fuel hedge losses from sinking oil prices.

NTUC, unions rebuke 'unfair' layoffs at P&W, SIA Engineering joint venture

Three unions and the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) have publicly censured and halted “unfair” layoffs that reportedly affected more than a hundred workers at aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) company Eagle Services Asia.

On July 22, the management of Eagle, which is a 51:49 joint venture between American aerospace manufacturer Pratt & Whitney (P&W) and mainboard-listed SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC), had released specific employees before finalising the name list with the unions.

This was in spite of ongoing negotiations since early July with the Air Transport Executive Staff Union (AESU), the SIA Engineering Company Engineers and Executives Union (SEEU), and the Singapore Airlines Staff Union (SIASU).

When the unions were later alerted that Eagle had gone ahead to start informing employees that they may be retrenched, NTUC and the unions stepped in immediately to stop any further action by the company until an agreement could be reached.

Troubled Hin Leong's owners try to block OCBC from picking at shipping units

SINGAPORE – The family that owns beleaguered Singaporean oil trader Hin Leong Trading (HLT) is seeking to block creditor OCBC’s request to appoint overseers for the family’s Xihe Holdings and four other subsidiaries to recoup its debt.

Oversea Chinese Banking Corp (OCBC) applied last week for the Singapore High Court to appoint judicial managers over Xihe, owned by the family of Hin Leong founder Lim Oon Kuin, known as O.K. Lim.

Kenny Lim Oon Cheng, Xihe Holdings interim chief executive, said in a July 28 affidavit reviewed by Reuters that granting OCBC’s request will “disrupt the constructive discussions that the Xihe Group has had with third parties including lenders”.

It could also result in a fire sale of its assets and “a destruction of value” for shareholders including lenders, he added.

OCBC’s application is an attempt to obtain a “backdoor” ruling to freeze the Lim family’s assets in Xihe Group “to protect their interests as lenders to HLT” and its other shipping company Ocean Tankers Pte Ltd, Kenny Lim also said.

HLT owes OCBC $250 million.

OCBC declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

NDP2020: NDP favourites at our doorstep, SGUnited game damn strong

[ad_1]

In an address to the nation on March 12, 2020 about the Covid-19 situation in Singapore, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said: “What makes Singapore different from other countries is that we have confidence in each other, we feel that we are all in this together, and we do not leave anyone behind. This is SG United, we are SG United.”

Almost five months later, as we prepare to celebrate Singapore’s 55th birthday on Aug 9, 2020, and even as frontline staff continue the fight against Covid-19 to keep Singapore going, the SG United spirit is unwavering.

The theme of this year’s NDP is “Strength of Our Nation” (it could very well have been “Singapore Tok Kong”) and it is a celebration not only of our resilience during this pandemic, but also of our strength and unity built over the past 55 years. The best part: All our NDP favourites will be coming to our doorstep!

Li Shengwu fined $15,000 for contempt of court

0

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – The High Court on Wednesday (July 29) fined Mr Li Shengwu, nephew of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, $15,000 after finding him guilty of contempt by scandalising the court in a Facebook post he made in July 2017.

If Mr Li does not pay the fine, he will have to serve a default jail term of one week’s jail.

Mr Li, who announced in January that he would no longer participate in the contempt proceedings, was absent from court.

Earlier this month, when the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) made arguments for him to be found guilty, the court was told that reminders for him to attend court had been sent to Harvard University, where Mr Li, 35, is an assistant professor of economics.

In his decision, Justice Kannan Ramesh found that Mr Li’s post posed a real risk of undermining public confidence in the administration of justice.

He also rejected Mr Li’s argument that the post was private as it was visible only to his Facebook friends.

This argument, said the judge, skirted the real issue of whether it was reasonably forseeable that the post would be re-published.

Over 13,000 work attachments open to mid-career job seekers from Aug 1

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – From Saturday (Aug 1), mid-career job seekers will be able to apply for more than 13,000 company attachments through the MyCareersFuture.sg portal, Workforce Singapore (WSG) said on Wednesday.

These will come from the pool of positions earlier approved for fresh and recent graduates.

The mid-career attachments can range from four to nine months and must start by March 31 next year. A job is not guaranteed after the attachment, but host organisations can consider hiring workers who perform well when business conditions improve.

Workers on the attachments will receive a monthly training allowance of between $1,400 and $3,000, of which 80 per cent will be funded by the Government, said WSG in a media release on Wednesday.

The attachments are part of the SGUnited Mid-Career Pathways Programme and include roles such as business development managers, software engineers, finance analysts and e-commerce associates.

Singapore's jobless rate jumps in second quarter, nearing financial crisis peak

0

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – Singapore’s jobless rate rose sharply in the second quarter to a new decade-high of 2.9 per cent, provisional data showed on Wednesday, as the Covid-19 pandemic saw employment shrink in the services and construction sector.

The overall unemployment rate climbed from 2.4 per cent in the first quarter, moving within sight of a 3.4 per cent peak hit during the global financial crisis of 2009 SGUNRP=ECI.

Retrenchments were much higher between April and June at 6,700, compared to 3,220 in the previous quarter.

“Softness in the labour market is likely to persist with continued weakness in hiring and pressure on companies to retrench,” the manpower ministry said.

Singapore has reported over 50,000 Covid-19 cases, the vast majority in migrant worker dormitories which has hammered a construction industry reliant on cheap labour.

Visitors have been banned, leading to large-scale layoffs in the tourism sector, and a lockdown in the city-state for much of the second quarter dented retail and restaurant businesses.
