A picture speaks a thousand words.

It may be common knowledge that businesses have taken a hit during the ongoing pandemic, but a recent Facebook photo of a lone elderly man tending to an old school sundry shop still hit many in the feels.

The photo, uploaded by one Joan Sami K on Aug 29, was also accompanied by an impassioned plea for netizens to support the man’s store at North Bridge Road Market and Food Centre.

“It’s late and yet he is still hanging on,” she wrote.

“He’s earning an honest livelihood through hard work, not begging for a living. Support your local little shops. They have it tougher than the big supermarkets.”

The picture, showing the simple, rustic shop surrounded by other shuttered businesses, garnered over 24,000 shares at the time of writing and more than a few sympathetic comments.

“Sad to see that at his age, he has to go through long hours [of] work. He must be from the generation that cherish resilience and self-reliance,” one commenter said.

When the fun became serious for top YouTuber in Singapore

[ad_1]

You can get a lot of hate as a YouTuber, even when you’re a popular one – just ask Tan Jian Hao, who runs the channel JianHao Tan.

With 4.25 million subscribers, Tan has become Singapore’s most popular YouTuber off the back of hundreds of well-loved, and sometimes derided, listicle videos. Not that this bothers the 27-year-old much. When you’re making seven figures, haters are probably the last thing on your mind.

“I often see people making fun of influencers. When I started out, people laughed at me and told me it will never be a real job – doing ads, making videos, taking pictures,” says Tan, who made the US business magazine Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list in 2015. “Then I saw the same people jump at the chance to do ads and make a living off social media.”

Tan’s channel catapulted him to fame after it was launched in 2010, thanks to its irreverent content for teens.

SimplyGo pilot programme to expand use of adult EZ-Link cards

0

SINGAPORE: The SimplyGo platform will be expanded to include adult EZ-Link CePAS cards, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Tuesday (Sep 1).

Launched in April last year, SimplyGo allows commuters to use contactless cards or mobile wallets to pay for public transport.

Currently more than 300,000 daily transport trips are paid for using SimplyGo via Mastercard, Visa and NETS Tap contactless cards.

More than 2,000 registered EZ-Link mobile app users have been invited to participate in the pilot, said LTA.

Other commuters who are interested to take part can indicate their interest through www.ezlink.com.sg/pilottrial, and those shortlisted will be provided with an upgraded EZ-Link card at no extra charge during the trial.

“The pilot trial is a crucial first step for us as we look to integrate our EZ-Link card with the SimplyGo platform through the upgraded EZ-Link card and app, so that commuters enjoy a seamless travel experience and improved services,” said EZ-Link CEO Nicholas Lee.

The pilot is designed to gain insights into potential user experience improvements, before all adult EZ-Link cards can be upgraded for cardholders to access the full range of benefits of transacting digitally.

Commuters will be able to purchase upgraded EZ-Link cards next year, said LTA.

The upgraded EZ-Link cards will allow commuters to access their travel history and fare charges and submit fare refund requests via the TL SimplyGo mobile app.

Commuters can also use the EZ-Link mobile app to add value to their cards and another user’s card, such as a family member, and earn rewards points for every transaction made. Lost cards also can be blocked immediately via the app to prevent unauthorised usage.

For commuters without access to mobile apps, services such as top-ups will remain available at ticketing machines and TransitLink ticket offices.

The all-new Honda City is now available in Singapore.

Launched by official agent Kah Motor, the new Honda City is available in SV and RS variants, with prices currently starting from $89,999.

Upmarket design

Honda wanted the new City to be an “ambitious sedan” and the styling reflects this, as it is clearly inspired by the larger Honda Civic and Accord models.

The new City is has more road presence than before as it is longer, lower and wider than the older model. Its overall length has increased by 111mm, and it has been given a more prominent nose, too.

Much of this has to do with the thinner front seat backs, which increase knee space for rear occupants. The span of the front seat rail has also been extended to enhance foot space.

Car reverses into parking lot near Bukit Timah Food Centre, hits woman and child

Moments of negligence on the road can more often than not contribute to accidents — whether it is the driver or pedestrian at fault.

In a video clip shared by Facebook group SG Road Vigilante on Aug 27, a white Mazda was seen knocking down a woman and a student while reversing into a lot at the car park outside Bukit Timah Food Centre.
PHOTO: Screengrab/Facebook/SGRVigilanteBased on footage taken by the dashcam of another vehicle, the vehicle was reversing into a parking lot at a slow but steady pace. Behind its rear were a woman and child who appeared to be heading to the food centre.

But something caught the attention of the woman and child as they were looking to their left while walking forward while the car continued to reverse.

The vehicle then collided with both the woman and the child. The impact caused the pair to fall back onto a parked vehicle behind them, and subsequently falling to the ground.

Pritam Singh vows both scrutiny and support of PAP, cites Hong Kong, South China Sea

0

[ad_1]

Pritam Singh, Singapore’s newly appointed Leader of the Opposition, on Monday sought to temper expectations that his Workers’ Party could immediately go toe to toe with the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) in formulating alternative policies and stressed that it would back the government if it was in the national interest.

In particular, the party – which made historic gains in July’s election – supported efforts to finalise a code of conduct in the South China Sea, said Pritam. In a wide-ranging speech, he also asked the government to seize opportunities amid the downturn including those borne out of Hong Kong’s political crisis.

Speaking in parliament, Singh emphasised that while the Workers’ Party would do its best to scrutinise the government with the added official resources handed to it, it was facing off with a ruling party that had the entire civil service at its disposal.

Restaurant ordered shut for hiding alcohol in teapot after 10.30pm

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – A bar at Science Park Drive and two restaurants have been ordered shut by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) after they were found to have flouted safe management measures.

S-Tripes Hotpot, a restaurant in Havelock Road, will have to close from Sept 2 to 11, after SFA officers found that it had flouted various safe management measures.

This included the selling of alcoholic beverages after 10.30pm.

The restaurant’s staff had transferred the alcoholic beverages into teapots and empty green tea bottles to avoid detection. Staff were also not faysal testing masks, or were not faysal testing them properly despite reminders to do so, said the agency.

The restaurant was fined $2,000 for the offences.

Whimsical Bar was ordered to close with immediate effect, after SFA officers found that the bar’s customers were consuming alcoholic beverages after 10.30pm.

It had also allowed groups of more than five to sit together and mingle, said SFA in a release on Monday evening (Aug 31).
