Netball: Singapore cruise past host Philippines in SEA Games opener

0

LAGUNA: It was labelled as a match between close friends by Singapore captain Charmaine Soh, but there was nothing close about the scoreline as Singapore beat host Philippines 80-28 in their opening game at the 30th SEA Games on Monday (25 Nov).

At the Laguna sports complex in Santa Rosa, the Singaporeans, who last won gold in 2015, raced to a 21-6 lead in the opening quarter.

The Philippines’ team was urged on by an enthusiastic crowd, many of whom were armed with colourful pom-poms, but the Singapore side kept the cheers to a minimum as they stretched their lead to 43-15 in the second quarter.

Exceptional defence from Natalie Milicich’s side meant they kept the home team to just five points in the third, before closing out the game.

Speaking to CNA after the game, Soh said that players from both the Philippines and Singapore team are “like long-time friends”.

“The Philippines team and us have a very close friendship, so playing them on court felt like a game between close friends,” said Soh.

“Even in the hotel, we say hi and hug each other like long-time friends.”

During the game, for instance, players from both sides could be seen speaking with one another, with Soh occasionally applauding the efforts of the Filipinos.

“The players were saying that they improved quite a bit,” she added.

“We played well, we had quite a jittery start but we managed to carry out the game plan after. I felt that the whole team got on court – the young ones, the old ones, we try to work out combis (combinations) and setups so the team did pretty well.”

Following reports that insufficient food had been an issue for the team at their hotel, Soh said that it was settled “almost immediately”.

She said: “The hotel and accommodation are good, everything is fine.

“Normally we eat a bit more, just that the portion wasn’t a lot. So we coped with the issue by ordering (food) in so that wasn’t an issue at all. We manage to settle the issue almost immediately.”

The team has taken it in their stride, added Soh.

“We should expect the unexpected. This is just one of those unexpected events we have to cope with and this is really a small issue for us,” she said.

At the last edition of the Games, Singapore beat Philippines 91-22, but missed out on gold after losing to host and Causeway rivals Malaysia 65-41 in the finals.

Singapore will face Brunei next on Wednesday.

SINGAPORE – Singapore Airlines (SIA) could not retain its crown as the best airline in 2020, slipping a spot to No. 2 behind Air New Zealand, according to airline safety and product rating review website AirlineRatings.

Even so, SIA snagged the Best First Class Airline accolade.

This is the sixth time Air New Zealand has been given the top award, with airlines assessed based on a range of factors including safety, environmental leadership and motivation of its staff.

Released on Monday (Nov 25), the list was the verdict of a judging panel of seven editors with more than 200 years of industry experience combined.

AirlineRatings, an Australia-based website that started in 2013, said that to be named in its top 10 list, airlines must achieve a seven-star safety rating and demonstrate leadership in innovation for passenger comfort.

The site said Air New Zealand’s win was impressive, given its relative size when compared with other international brands such as SIA, Qantas and Cathay Pacific.

SINGAPORE – Triggered by his wife nagging at him to resolve their son’s marital problems, a 61-year-old jobless man decided to suffocate her.

Govindarajan Thiruvengadam Uthirapathy attacked her from behind, covered her head with a plastic bag and tightened it around her neck until she fell to the floor.

When he realised that she was unconscious but breathing, he took the gold chain around her neck, went straight to pawn it, then shared the spoils with his mistress.

On Monday (Nov 25), Govindarajan was sentenced to three years and three months’ jail by the High Court after he pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted culpable homicide.

A charge of theft for stealing his wife’s gold chain and a wallet containing $300 was taken into consideration.

His wife, hospital nurse Ellapur Selvi Chanthenatever, 56, submitted a letter to the court pleading for leniency, saying that she has forgiven him.

The one year without her husband, who was remanded in custody after he was arrested in April last year, had been a “trying time” for her and their children, and caused her “many sleepless nights”, she said.

Third bridge needed to ease congestion between Johor and Singapore: Malaysian minister

[ad_1]

ISKANDAR PUTERI – A third bridge linking Singapore and Johor will resolve congestion problems at both the Causeway and Second Link here.

Gambir assemblyman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Pagoh MP and Home Minister, said the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) at both Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) were already reaching their maximum capabilities.

He said he had been appointed by the Federal Government to head a committee to oversee the congestion at both checkpoints.

“The two premises have already reached their maximum level of capacity.

“The congestion at the BSI in Johor Baru is the most congested CIQ in the world, and this is something we should not be proud of, ” he said during the debate on Johor’s Budget 2020 yesterday.

Muhyiddin said he had informed the Federal Government an important factor to solve congestions at the two checkpoints was to build a third bridge.

“If the state government supports this, then I will start the initiative to have a third bridge, which must begin now.

Number of tech-based sex crimes soars: Aware

[ad_1]

Technology-facilitated sex offences, such as upskirting, voyeurism and revenge porn, have been on the rise over the last three years, according to the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware).

The gender-equality advocacy group’s Sexual Assault Care Centre (SACC) said it saw 124 – or nearly three times more – cyber-related sexual offences last year, compared with 2016, where it saw 46 cases. The centre saw 99 such cases in 2017.

At an event titled Taking Ctrl, Finding Alt 2019 held at the Lifelong Learning Institute in Paya Lebar yesterday, SACC head Anisha Joseph revealed that image-based sexual abuse – defined as the non-consensual creation, obtainment and/or distribution of sexual pictures or videos of someone else – seen by the SACC has more than doubled over the three years, from 30 in 2016 to 64 last year.

This includes nudes taken with the subject’s consent or without his or her knowledge, like in cases of upskirting or voyeurism.

ComfortDelGro to launch Singapore’s first ‘fully predictive anti-collision’ bus

0

SINGAPORE: ComfortDelGro will soon roll out buses equipped with automatic brakes that will bring them to a stop if it “senses” an impending collision, said the transport operator on Tuesday (Nov 26).

With the first of four buses hitting the road on Dec 1, the company said they will be the first “fully predictive anti-collision” buses in Singapore.

Manufactured by Volvo, the B8R 49-seater buses come with a driver support system that has a built-in collision warning and emergency brake feature.

Here is how it works: A radar-based sensor and a camera are activated once the bus accelerates past 15kmh. When a potential collision with another vehicle is detected, a beeping sound and a blinking red light on the dashboard will go off.

In the absence of a response by the driver, soft braking will be initiated before full braking power is applied to bring the bus to a complete stop before any collision occurs.

The system also alerts the driver when the bus veers off its lane.

While the safety features help to keep drivers alert, bus driver Lim Chye Whatt said: “At the end of the day, as a driver, I need to be aware of my surroundings and not just rely on the machine.”

In the video, the driver whose car camera had captured the video, can be heard talking to someone on the phone.

The driver is first heard introducing himself and sharing his details, then saying: “No weapons, he smashed on my window, smashed on my window.”

He also said that he did not know the man who had apparently smashed his car window and that he did not need an ambulance.

Authorities seize S$66,000 worth of e-vaporisers, accessories

0

SINGAPORE: The authorities seized dozens of electronic vaporisers and thousands of related accessories over the course of about a week earlier this month, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said in a joint media release on Tuesday (Nov 26).

A 28-year-old man suspected of peddling the items had ordered them online from overseas vendors and attempted to import the products by declaring them as electronic and facial products, said HSA and ICA. He is assisting HSA with investigations.

In total, 189 sets of e-vaporisers and 4,703 related accessories were seized. The estimated street value of the products is S$66,000, said ICA and HSA.

On Nov 7, ICA officers at Changi Airfreight Centre alerted HSA after detecting a consignment of parcels containing e-vaporisers and related accessories.

They uncovered eight parcels containing 24 sets of e-vaporisers and 1,209 accessories. All the parcels were bound for the same addressee.

The authorities then visited the addressee’s storage premises, and seized five more sets of e-vaporisers and 3,194 accessories.

A few days later on Nov 13, HSA was again alerted to another suspicious consignment at Changi Airfreight Centre.

Seven parcels addressed to the same suspect were found to contain 160 sets of e-vaporisers and 300 accessories.

First-time offenders who smuggle and peddle e-vaporisers could be fined up to S$10,000, jailed for up to six months, or both.

Offenders could be fined up to S$20,000, jailed for up to 12 months, or both for subsequent offences.

“The public should not purchase any e-vaporisers (including through the Internet), to be brought into Singapore,” said ICA and HSA.

“The public should also refrain from using e-vaporisers and discard any e-vaporisers they have in their possession.”

Anyone caught using, buying or in possession of e-vaporisers can also be fined up to S$2,000.
