'Sugar dating' website from Japan opens branch in Singapore

0

[ad_1]

A sugar dating website from Japan that aims to match young women in Singapore with well-heeled men has launched its service here.

Calling itself a “luxury dating club”, Universe Club operates 14 branches across Japan, with more than 7,000 women in its database and about 3,000 registered male members.

It started operations in Singapore a month ago, said a spokesperson.

Sugar dating refers to a money-for-love arrangement, where young women usually known as “sugar babies” date (usually) much older men — “sugar daddies” — in return for cash or material comforts.

A scan of Universe Club’s Singapore memberships page on Thursday (Dec 5) showed brief profiles of 37 women accompanied by full-body photos, sans faces.

One description of a profile titled “The serious and focused lady” reads: “A model looking for opportunities for her career. In search also to widen her network.”

Another photo of a woman in a more revealing pose has the caption: “Loves to be with any sugar daddy that will be able to support her in any way. A sophisticated sugar baby.”

All town councils have unqualified financial statements for FY2018

0

SINGAPORE: All 16 town councils had unqualified financial statements for the 2018 financial year, the Ministry of National Development (MND) said in a press release on Thursday (Dec 5).

The ministry also released its Town Council Management Report for the financial year, which saw two town councils score an “amber” rating for corporate governance.

The town councils are assessed annually under five indicators using three colour bands – green, amber and red.

For corporate governance, a “green” rating means that there was full compliance with the checklist for the indicators; “amber” means there is one item of non-compliance or one observation from the auditor; “red” is the worst rating, with at least one item of non-compliance and one observation from the auditor, or two or more items in either category.

Table: Summary of Town Councils' performance for FY2018

(Image: Ministry of National Development)

Broadly, the results of the 2018 Town Council Management Report are comparable with that of previous years, with improvements observed in estate maintenance, said MND.

Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council and Jurong-Clementi Town Council scored “amber” for corporate governance, due to one count each of non-compliance with the Town Councils Act and the Town Councils Financial Rules.

The amber rating for Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council was related to the collection of charges for the use of outdoor display areas by third-party retailers.

This went beyond the provisions of the Town Councils (Use of Common Property) Rules, which require these areas to be confined to incidental use by existing businesses, said MND.

Jurong-Clementi Town Council’s rating was due to quotations under the Town Councils Financial Rules.

The rules allow quotations of up to S$3,000 to be obtained verbally and approved, and then circulated to the town council for information.

While the Jurong-Clementi Town Council had obtained approval from the appropriate authority for these quotations, it had not circulated them as required by the financial rules, said MND.

The ministry also singled out Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) for mention, noting that it had achieved a green banding for corporate governance, an improvement from its previous amber rating for the previous financial year.

“This was due in large part to the efforts of KPMG (the accountants appointed by AHTC pursuant to a court order in 2015), which assisted AHTC in its remediation of past control failures and audit points over a period of 24 months,” said MND.

“HDB had provided funding for this work done by KPMG.”

Separately, MND also voiced concerns over Ms Sylvia Lim and Mr Low Thia Kiang’s continued involvement in the financial affairs of AHTC.

Cross Island MRT Line to run directly under Central Catchment Nature Reserve

0

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – The Cross Island MRT Line (CRL) will run directly under Singapore’s largest nature reserve, instead of skirting around it.

Announcing its decision on Wednesday (Dec 4), the Ministry of Transport (MOT) said the direct alignment will have tunnels going 70m below the Central Catchment Nature Reserve.

Both options – going directly under and skirting around the reserve – are considered viable after an in-depth study, but nature groups had strongly called for the skirting alignment to prevent detrimental impact on flora and fauna in the gazetted reserve near MacRitchie Reservoir.

MOT said the direct alignment will result in the total travel time becoming six minutes shorter than the skirting option.

Fares will also be about 15 per cent lower per trip on average as the route is shorter and more direct, and construction cost is expected to be $2 billion lower.

The ministry also said the direct route will be more environmentally friendly in the long run, as it “has lower energy consumption”.

Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council apologises for wrong Tamil translation in newsletter

0

SINGAPORE: Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council on Thursday (Dec 5) apologised for errors in its Tamil translation of a police advisory in its recent newsletter.

Replying to CNA’s queries, a town council spokesperson said this was due to a “typesetting error” when the article was sent to print.

“We failed to notice (the mistake) before the newsletter was sent out,” said the spokesperson.

Inaccurate Tamil translations were found in the MY Kampung newsletter

Inaccurate Tamil translations were found in the MY Kampung newsletter.

The town council will make amendments to the article and redistribute the MY Kampung newsletter to every Housing and Development Board (HDB) household within the constituency.

“Along with the amended article, we will also issue a letter to all the households to express our sincere apology for such an unfortunate incident,” the spokesperson added.

“We will also do our best to ensure that this incident does not happen again.”

Woodlands resident Priscilla Kumari, who contacted CNA about the error, said the Tamil text was “seriously flawed and unreadable” and that the error was “surprising”.

Ms Kumari added that her neighbourhood had many elderly residents who may rely on the Tamil translation if they cannot read English.

“How can this happen without proofreading before going to print? It’s embarrassing,” she added.

CNA has asked the town council when the newsletter was distributed and how many people had received it.

Earlier this year, a non-elected People’s Action Party representative apologised after brochures containing Tamil translation errors were distributed to Kaki Bukit residents.

In 2017, inaccurate Tamil translations were also found in National Day Parade publicity pamphlets.

Condo killer litter: Aussie allegedly linked to fatal case faces extra charge of causing hurt in 'religiously aggravated' incident

SINGAPORE – An Australian man allegedly involved in a condominium fatal killer litter case now faces an extra charge of causing hurt to a woman in the same incident, with the new offence described in court documents as being “religiously aggravated”.

Appearing in court via video-link, Andrew Gosling, 47, was charged on Thursday (Dec 5) with one count of causing hurt with an instrument, injuring a woman, identified as Ms Manisah, at a 35-storey condominium in Spottiswoode Park Road.

Earlier this year, he was charged with one count of voluntarily causing grievous hurt with an instrument.

Gosling had allegedly thrown a glass wine bottle from a lift landing on the seventh storey of the Spottiswoode 18 condominium towards a table near the barbecue area on the fifth storey at around 8.30pm on Aug 18.

The bottle is said to have struck Ms Manisah, causing bruises to her right shoulder, and also hit delivery driver Nasiari Sunee’s head, causing a skull fracture that led to his death.

The 73-year-old driver was at a housewarming party of a relative when the bottle hit him just as he was about to eat.

Months of planning wasted after Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon disrupts multiple weddings

0

[ad_1]

A year of meticulous planning for a couple’s special day went down the drain after guests and vendors alike failed to turn up on time for their wedding on Nov 30.

The reason?

Road closures throughout the city thanks to the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon.

Although the previous 17 iterations of the race were held in the morning, organiser Ironman Asia changed this year’s flag off time to 6pm in order to boost the appeal of the race. It also hoped to be inducted into the Abbott World Marathon Majors club — a series of the world’s largest and most prestigious races.

Unfortunately for Jianming Lee, that meant the roads leading to his wedding venue at Marina Mandarin were closed off from as early as 1.30pm.

In a post on Facebook, Lee shared how his wedding, originally scheduled to start at 7pm, was devoid of guests, including his own parents.

“I went down at 7.10pm and saw nobody at the cocktail area,” he told Mothership.

A behind-the-scenes look at Amazon’s new (and oddly serene) warehouse in Singapore

0

[ad_1]

The year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday events may be in the rearview mirror, but the engines of the retail industry must chug on. Especially so for the biggest retailer on the planet, Amazon.

It took some time, but the e-commerce juggernaut finally made its way to Singapore in October with a bona fide local online store, its first digital outpost in Southeast Asia.

It wasn’t easy, of course; the region has long been saturated with Chinese and homegrown (albeit with Chinese backing) online retailers. Despite Amazon’s dominance in the United States, the likes of Lazada, Shopee, Taobao and Tokopedia are the more familiar names in our neck of the woods.

But what Bezos wants, Bezos gets. Two years after the Amazon Prime fast-delivery service membership programme was launched here, Amazon.sg is officially here, opening the floodgates to millions upon millions of products available for purchase from both local and international vendors.

3 types of diabetes medication recalled over ‘impurity’

0

SINGAPORE: Three types of metformin diabetes medications are being recalled after they were found to contain trace amounts of an impurity, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said on Thursday (Dec 5).

The affected medications are one batch of Glucient XR Tablet 500mg supplied by Glorious Dexa Singapore and all batches of 750mg and 1000mg versions of Meijumet Prolonged Release Tablet, supplied by Pharmazen Medical.

All three drugs were found to contain amounts of a type of nitrosamine impurity – known as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) – which are above the internationally acceptable level.

HSA said that it has tested all 46 locally marketed metformin medicines and found that the other 43 drugs were not affected.

READ: 137,000 patients affected by losartan high blood pressure medicine recall: MOH

HSA table list of recalled metformin medicines

(Table: Health Sciences Authority)

HSA added that the risk to patients who have been taking the three affected metformin medicines is “very low”.

“This is because the potential risk of nitrosamines is associated with long-term use, and the three affected medicines have only been supplied locally for a short period of time since last year.”

NDMA is commonly found in low levels in processed food such as pickled vegetables, salted fish and processed meat products such as bacon and sausages. It is also found in the environment and is present in air pollution.

Nitrosamine impurities have also recently been found to have formed unexpectedly during the manufacture of some medicine.

PATIENTS SHOULD NOT STOP TAKING MEDICATION

Patients taking the affected metformin medicines are advised not to stop treatment on their own, as the sudden stopping of medicines will raise blood sugar levels, which may pose a greater health risk.

Healthcare professionals have been advised by HSA to contact their affected patients to arrange for an exchange of their medicines as soon as possible. Patients who are concerned about their current treatment can speak to their doctor or pharmacist.

HSA said that it is also working with the companies supplying these medicines as well as international regulatory agencies to verify the causes of the contamination, and to address the issue.

According to HSA, worldwide recalls have been conducted for the affected products.

Acceptable levels of nitrosamines are set in nanograms and is based on what is considered as reasonably safe if a patient continues to take the affected medicine every day for a lifetime of 70 years.

For example, the added cancer risk from an additional six-month exposure is estimated to be less than 0.00002 per cent.

“The additional risk posed by NDMA from metformin, at the levels detected, is considered very low,” HSA said.
