Got $160k? You can now buy this durian taped to a wall

This local durian joint is venturing into the art business. Their first piece? A durian duct-taped to a wall, available at the very reasonable price of $163,056 (wall not included).

According to 99 Old Trees, the piece, fittingly titled Durian Tape to White Wall, “looks like art, smells like fart”.

But it’s not just a fruit taped to a wall. The “durian bondage art” serves as a reminder of our forefathers’ past struggles and signifies our colonial past, said 99 Old Trees.

In case you haven’t caught on yet, this is simply a clever spoof of a work of art that sold for US$120,000 (S$163,200) recently at Miami Beach Art Basel — a banana duct-taped to a wall.

Digital services like Netflix will be taxed starting next year

0

[ad_1]

Watching your favourite shows on Netflix may get more expensive when the goods and services tax (GST) for imported digital services kicks in on Jan 1.

More than 100 overseas digital service providers have registered for GST under Singapore’s Overseas Vendor Registration (OVR) regime, said the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (Iras).

Digital services are those supplied over the Internet or those using an electronic network.

Subscription-based media, such as Netflix, is one example of a digital service that will be taxed.

Others include downloadable digital content such as mobile apps and movies, software programmes such as photoshop tools and office suites, and electronic data management such as cloud storage services.

Currently, only locally procured services are subject to GST, while services procured from overseas are not.

Starting next year, prices of these digital services will be inclusive of GST.

Overseas providers who exceed $1 million in their yearly global turnover and sell more than $100,000 worth of digital services to customers in Singapore in a 12-month period, must register and charge for GST.

Car park next to ICA Building to cease operations next year

0

SINGAPORE: The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Tuesday (Dec 10) announced that the car park adjacent to its building at 10 Kallang Road will cease operations on Jan 1, 2020.

The car park will be demolished to make way for the construction of ICA’s new Integrated Services Centre, said the authority in a news release.

Expected to begin operations by 2023, the centre will integrate digital systems with biometric and automation technologies.

“This is part of ICA’s efforts to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness while offering convenient and secured services to our customers,” said ICA.

During the construction period, those visiting the ICA Building are encouraged to take public transport as it is within walking distance of Lavender MRT station.

If customers wish to drive, they may park their vehicles at alternative car parks located along North Bridge Road, Crawford Lane and French Road, said ICA.

Those taking a taxi can alight at the taxi bay along Kallang Road or the drop-off bay at the main entrance of the ICA Building. There will be on-ground support, like traffic marshals, helping to guide motorists from January 2020 to March 2020.

Customers applying for immigration or registration facilities such as passport or NRIC are “strongly encouraged to submit their applications online to save the hassle of making a physical trip to the ICA Building”, said the authority.

Eligible customers may also choose to collect their Singapore passport, identity card and/or Long Term Pass card at selected post offices for a service fee.

Farrer Road hit-and-run death: Maid's employers said they will pay for her children's school fees

The employers of the maid who died in a hit-and-run on Saturday have said they will pay for her children’s school fees until they graduate.

Filipina Lyn Ocampo Santos, 49, was walking on a covered walkway outside Farrer Road MRT when a car allegedly lost control and hit her from behind.

She was on her way to Empress Road Market and Food Centre, which she went to every morning to shop for groceries.

The police subsequently arrested a suspect, 24, for causing death by dangerous driving.

In an interview with Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News on Sunday night, Ms Santos’ employers, an elderly couple who did not want to be named, said they cried when the police informed them of the accident.

Her employer said they were her first employers, and treated her like their daughter as they were close.

He said: “She would participate in all our festive celebrations and also go travelling with us. We went to Hong Kong last year, and we also planned to celebrate Christmas together this year.”

Ms Santos is survived by a husband and two sons, 18 and seven.

Robot guards assist in security exercise at Ang Mo Kio MRT station

Commuters at Ang Mo Kio MRT station were yesterday greeted by the sight of Singapore’s latest security officers on wheels: two high-tech robot guards.

The robots – the OB1FORC3 and the K3NOBI models – are equipped with intelligent surveillance cameras, sensors and video analytics capabilities.

Developed by local security company Oneberry Technologies, they were taking part in Exercise Station Guard, an emergency preparedness exercise carried out by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the SMRT to ensure operational readiness and strengthen security in public places.

The robots moved around Ang Mo Kio station looking out for suspicious people and unattended items, observed by Senior Minister of State for Transport Janil Puthucheary.

As part of the exercise, commuters also participated in security screenings, which involved walking through a metal detector and having their belongings scanned by X-ray machines.

SINGAPORE – Three more Young Lions, all aged 20, were found to have broken curfew during their dismal SEA Games football campaign, taking the total number of players caught flouting the rule to nine out of the 20-man squad.

In a statement by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) last night, it announced: “In the matter of the six Singapore U-22 national team players found to have broken curfew during the 30th SEA Games, three more players were found to (have) committed the same offence after further thorough investigations by the FAS.

“Shah Shahiran, Hami Syahin and Saifullah Akbar will face disciplinary measures along with the other six players.

“The FAS would like to reiterate that such conduct by National Team players is wholly unacceptable and any player found guilty of such offences will be dealt with severely.

“As the matter is currently before the disciplinary committee, the FAS will not be making any further comments until it is appropriate to do so.”

This homegrown app brings comics to life with motion, music, and sound effects

0

[ad_1]

Traditionally, comics and graphic novels have made for colourful yet static reading, and one homegrown outfit wants to take that experience to the next level.

Local visual effects and design studio Vividthree has launched an app called ComicVid, which aims to blur the lines between the mediums of comic and animation. In other words, the platform lets artists bring their stills to life, complete with motion, sound and music effects.

Granted, similar apps have been around for quite some time already — fans have long gone digital through the likes of Comixology and Astonishing Comic Reader, both of which allow diehards to take their entire collection with them on the go.

But don’t let the lack of big names like Marvel, DC or Dark Horse Comics deter you from ComicVid. Its library is more Asian-centric, with indie artists like Malaysia’s Justin C and Singapore’s Josef Lee on board with their works.

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE – Two men were arrested by the police after a brawl at Jewel Changi Airport on Sunday (Dec 8).

The police were alerted to the fight at around 11am.

“Two men, aged 43 and 55, were arrested for affray,” a police spokesman told The Straits Times, adding: “Both men sustained minor injuries.”

A 15-second video of the fight circulating online and on WhatApp showed a group of around 10 people – both men and women – involved in the fight in front of American fast-food chain A&W.

Some of them were hitting and kicking a man in a black jacket who had fallen to the ground, while others traded punches.

When contacted on the phone, a spokesman for Jewel said the mall is aware of the fight but it did not have more details.

ST has contacted A&W for more information.

Police investigations are ongoing.
