Residents in Kota Kinabalu wake up to partial solar eclipse

0

KOTA KINABALU – Residents here woke up to a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday morning.

The picture above was taken by The Star’s photographer Normimie Diun at Balai Cerap al-Biruni in Putatan here at 8am.

Depending on the location, Malaysians will be able to witness the phenomenon starting 7.24am on Wednesday during “first contact” when the moon’s disk will first touch the edge of the sun.

According to the National Planetarium’s website, the partial eclipse will have a maximum overlapping of up to 87 per cent in the southern parts of Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak.

This will decrease as it moves into the northern regions of the peninsula and Sabah. A solar eclipse began sweeping across the vast Indonesian archipelago, with hordes of skygazers set to watch the spectacle, which will be marked by parties, prayers and tribal rituals.

The moon began to move between the Earth and sun at 6:19 am (2319 GMT Tuesday), the official Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency said.

Football: Ruthless Ronaldo punishes profligate Roma Kieran

0

Madrid – Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez left Roma ruing a host of missed chances as Real Madrid moved into the quarter-finals of the Champions League 4-0 on aggregate with a 2-0 win on Tuesday.

Edin Dzeko and Mohamed Salah were the culprits in front of goal for the visitors before two goals in four second-half minutes ensured Madrid’s first win in a two-legged tie over Italian opposition in Europe for 29 years.

Ronaldo swept home Lucas Vazquez’s cross 26 minutes from time before turning provider for Rodriguez to smash home the second.

“I am happy with the way we attacked and I think defensively we improved a lot in the second-half,” said Real boss Zinedine Zidane.

“Everyone dreams of winning the Champions League and we are in the hunt.” Roma coach Luciano Spalletti criticised his side’s mental strength after letting Madrid off the hook.

“We have to point out that we had more chances than them and if we’d taken them then the psychology of the game changes,” said Spalletti.

“Right now on a mental level perhaps we are a bit fragile. It’s a big game, big games make us nervous and we have to change this.”

Gareth Bale started for Madrid for the first time in over six weeks due to a calf injury and the Welshman began brightly as he got a rare chance to start on the left with Ronaldo through the middle in the absence of the injured Karim Benzema.

Bale’s cut-back was sliced wide by Marcelo as Real threatened early on.

However, it was Roma who enjoyed the best of the chances before half-time to get back into the tie.

Former Manchester City striker Dzeko failed to repay Spalletti’s faith by handing him a start up front when he fired into the side-netting after Salah’s pace tore through the Madrid defence.

Salah had a great chance himself but he too could only find the side-netting when clean through on Keylor Navas just before the half-hour mark.

Yet, the hosts could also easily have been ahead by the break as former Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny was put to work in the Roma goal.

The Polish international’s palms were stung by Luka Modric’s long-range drive before Szczesny got down well to turn Ronaldo’s low shot to safety.

Ronaldo then had Madrid’s best chance of the half when he was played in by Bale, but Szczesny again scurried from his line to block the three-time World Player of the Year’s effort.

Szczesny was forced into action once more at the start of the second period to parry Rodriguez’s volley.

However, the pattern of the first half was repeated as the Italians then passed up a host of chances to put themselves ahead on the night.

Salah again failed to hit the target with just Navas to beat as the Egyptian continued to find acres of space in behind the Madrid defence.

Navas then had to make two smart saves from Alessandro Florenzi and Kostas Manolas as Roma finally at least hit the target.

Bale was replaced on the hour mark by Vazquez and the Spanish winger made an instant impact to tee up Ronaldo’s 13th Champions League goal of the season.

Vazquez got to the byline and Ronaldo beat his marker and Szczesny to his cross to fire into the roof of the net.

Four minutes later it was 2-0 as Ronaldo led a Madrid counter-attack and teed up Rodriguez to lash between Szczesny’s legs.

Ronaldo missed a glorious chance for his second of the night 20 minutes from time when he slotted just wide after a brilliant Real break involving Marcelo, Rodriguez and Vazquez from a Roma corner.

Spalletti then put his recent spat with club legend Francesco Totti behind him to introduce the 39-year-old for the closing stages to a standing ovation by the home fans.

And Roma were denied at least the goal their performance deserved when Navas flew to his right to claw away Diego Perotti’s effort and ensure he still hasn’t conceded a goal in the Champions League this season.

18-year-old sent to RTC for sexual assaults, thefts

0

AN 18-YEAR-OLD child molester and thief, who sexually assaulted three girls in Hougang, was yesterday sentenced to reformative training.

James Jerome Marius will also be disqualified from driving for a year after he completes his sentence.

A community court heard that on the night of Dec 4, 2012, Marius tailed an 11-year-old girl back to her Housing Board block in Hougang Avenue 8.

When she reached her block’s lift landing at about 8.50 pm, he asked her to follow him as he had something to tell her.

Afraid that he might harm her if she refused, she complied. Marius led her to the void deck of a nearby block.

He pulled her pants and panties down, although she squatted down in a bid to stop him.

He made her stand, touched her private parts and sexually assaulted her.

The girl shouted but Marius placed a hand over her mouth.

When she told him she wanted to leave, he asked her to hug him first. She then ran away to a carpark, where she asked a taxi driver for help and he called the police.

On July 20, 2013, Marius again tailed another girl going back home.

This time, he followed the 12-year-old into the lift at her block at Hougang Avenue 5 at about 4.45pm.

When she was about to exit the lift at her floor, he brushed his hand down from her chest area to her hip area.

She went home and told her mother about the incident.

Her father took her to make a police report three days later.

On Aug 26, 2014, Marius struck again. He was washing a car at a carpark in Hougang Central when he saw a nine-year-old walking home at about 5.30pm.

When she passed him, he asked her about her school and her uniform, before hugging her and touching the upper side of her inner thigh.

The girl’s mother went to look for Marius together with her daughter shortly after and the mother called the police .

On Nov 17 last year, Marius and two friends stole a motorcycle from an ITE College East carpark.

He rode the motorcycle around the carpark but the engine stalled shortly after.

He pushed the vehicle to nearby carpark and left it there.

On June 12 last year, he went into a store at Nex shopping mall, removed a soldering torch worth $29.70 from its packaging and walked out of the outlet with it.

He stole an Apple iPhone 4S on another occasion.

Reformative training is a strict regime in which young offenders are put behind bars for between 18 months and three years.

More Chinese couples say 'I do' to intimate weddings

0

MORE Chinese couples here are opting not to have the traditional “gatecrash” ritual on their wedding day, even as a trend of couples preferring smaller, more intimate weddings gains popularity.

The gatecrash ritual is a Chinese tradition and involves bridesmaids setting up obstacles or games for the groom and his entourage to overcome before they can enter the bride’s home.

Common activities include the eating of items that are sour, sweet, bitter and spicy to present the many flavours of marriage – a challenge that the groom must sportingly accept.

However, industry insiders tell My Paper that more couples are doing away with this ritual and they expect the trend to grow.

As many as one in five young couples in their late 20s to early 30s now choose to forgo this ritual altogether, said Daniel Beh, who has shot weddings for 11 years.

Mr Beh, an award-winning photographer who does about 50 shoots a year, said couples now want to keep it “simple” and “dignified”.

“Instead, they will do something meaningful, such as write a poem,” he noted.

However, the 34-year-old added that couples still engage in traditional tea ceremonies.

“It’s just minus the torture,” he said, referring to the tasks that bridesmaids can set up, such as push-ups and embarrassing antics.

Charles Sng, 41, who has done wedding photography since 2005, also noted this growing trend.

“Most of the time, they (opt out because they) don’t find much meaning in the gatecrashing,” he said.

Geri Yeo, a 29-year-old manager, and her engineer husband T. J. Lee, 31, are one such couple who did not have gatecrashing.

Ms Yeo, who tied the knot in July last year, told My Paper that they did not feel the need to have a gatecrash.

“There’s no meaning in making the groom go through obstacles before he meets the bride,” she said.

“It’s really just a logistical headache at the end of the day.”

At the same time, smaller-scale weddings are gaining momentum here.

Tan Weiwei, a 28-year-old senior wedding planner at Chere: Weddings & Parties, who has planned weddings for almost seven years, said about 20 per cent of couples now opt for smaller weddings with 80 to 120 guests.

Traditional Chinese banquet weddings host about 300 guests on average.

Ms Tan added that another trend is for some couples to have large wedding banquets “followed by smaller and more intimate celebrations”.

Sharol Pek, a wedding planner at Eternal Emotion Weddings, said that seven or eight in 10 couples she sees have weddings with less than a hundred guests.

Many prefer smaller-scale weddings for the intimacy and quality time they get with their guests.

Said the 26-year-old: “Couples are able to mingle more… and they don’t find the need to have large banquets, when half the guests are people you do not know or have not met for years.”

The smallest wedding she has planned for a local couple occurred last September, for 25 people at Alkaff Mansion.

Said Bey Wee Li, 28, who did not have a gatecrash ritual and held a “simple wedding lunch celebration” when she got married in April last year: “I think holding a wedding is expensive and it should be kept to just people who are important.”

She added that “parents are more open-minded now”.

Newlyweds now focus on having a meaningful wedding rather than “putting on a grand show just for others”, said Benny Ong, 30, photography art director of wedding photography and videography company Truetolove.

“I personally feel that’s a great approach. The true reason for a wedding is a celebration of the union of two individuals,” he added.

Fowl play: 13 firms accused of price fixing

0

THIRTEEN distributors, which supply more than 90 per cent of fresh chicken products here, have been accused of engaging in price-fixing.

They have six weeks to defend themselves to the Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) and could face fines if found to have infringed anti-competition rules.

The 13 companies are accused of having met to discuss the timing and amount of price increases.

The Straits Times reported last year that CCS started investigating the fresh chicken industry in late-2014 for price-fixing.

Yesterday, a written notice was issued to the parties involved to set out the facts on which the commission has made its assessment, and give the reasons for its proposed decision.

Investigations found that the parties met to discuss prices from at least 2007 to 2014 and also “expressly coordinated” the price increases of products.

They also agreed not to compete for each other’s customers during these discussions, the commission said.

These restricted customers’ choices and were aimed at distorting the prices of fresh chicken products here, it added.

Under the Competition Act, business entities should not enter into any agreement or arrangement that prevents, restricts or distorts competition.

They should instead respond independently to competition, said the commission.

One of the affected firms, Kee Song Brothers Poultry Industries, met its lawyers yesterday to discuss its next step.

James Sim, its group marketing manager, said: “What we did was to progressively adjust prices seasonally, according to demand and supply. When prices of seeds, corns and beans used to feed the chickens increase, we will also increase prices.”

The total turnover of the 13 firms amounts to about half a billion dollars annually. In 2014, about 46 million chickens were slaughtered and distributed here.

The trade has two main parts: slaughtering and distribution.

Distributors import chickens from farms in Malaysia and slaughter them here.

They sell to customers such as restaurants, supermarkets, hotels, wet market stalls and hawker stalls.

CCS has the power to fine companies up to 10 per cent of the turnover of their business in Singapore for each year of the infringement, up to a maximum of three years.
