Train services down between Pasir Ris and Tanah Merah due to 'incident on track': SMRT

0

Train services between Tanah Merah and Pasir Ris stations in both directions on the East-West Line were down on Tuesday morning due to an “incident on track”.

Rail operator SMRT first tweeted about the incident at about 11.20am, adding that services are expected to resume at 12.15pm.

Twitter user Jeremy Ho tweeted that commuters were asked to leave the station, just as he reached the train platform for “reasons unknown”, and he posted a video of the scene.

A subsequent tweet by SMRT added that free regular and shuttle bus services are available at the affected stops between the two stations.

Hulk Hogan gets $190 million in sex-tape case

0

Jurors on Monday awarded wrestling star Hulk Hogan a total of $140 million (S$190 million) – $25 million more than he was granted last week over a sex tape posted by entertainment website Gawker.

The 62-year-old Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, successfully argued that the posting of the secretly recorded video featuring him and a friend’s wife – which is less than two minutes long – invaded his privacy and humiliated him.

Hogan burst into tears Friday after the six-member jury announced its decision of the mammoth award in a court in St. Petersburg, Florida, after just six hours of deliberation. It was more than the $100 million Hogan had requested.

Yet Florida laws allow up to three times the compensatory amount in a case like this – meaning another $345 million more could have been awarded as punitive damages.

Instead, jurors added $25 million in punitive damages to the $115 million original award for violating Hogan’s privacy.

Hogan’s lawyer has said the video – published in October 2012 – was viewed around seven million times.

Gawker, which could face bankruptcy, intends to appeal.

The trial was closely watched by legal experts and celebrities as defence attorneys argued the publication of the sex tape was protected by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

One of America’s most famous entertainment wrestlers, the now-retired Hogan is known for wearing a bandana and a handlebar mustache.

During the trial, Hogan – dressed in a dark suit and black bandana – testified that a friend of his, radio personality Bubba “The Love Sponge” Clem, had an “open marriage” and wanted his wife to have sex with Hogan.

After several entreaties, Hogan said he finally agreed, not realizing that the encounter was secretly recorded.

SINGAPORE – A video being circulated on Facebook shows a group of kindergarten children bowing in front of a banner bearing the photograph of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

According to Facebook user Tengu Fuming, the video was shot at a residential block where a kindergarten is located.

In the video, a group of small children can be seen bowing three times in front of the banner. At least four adults were with them at the time.

The kindergarten at my block asking the children to bow three time out of respect to the photo of Mr Lee after telling them a short story of him. Do the children understand?

Posted by Tengmu Fuming on Sunday, March 20, 2016

The caption accompanying the Facebook video indicated that teachers had taught the children to do so after telling them a story about him.

But the user was sceptical about the lesson, writing in the post: “Do the children understand?”

The 39-second video has been shared 1,574 times, and viewed 85,942 times in less than 24 hours.

Chinese tourists kick and climb cherry blossom trees to take photos

0

To get the picture-perfect shot of Jiming Temple’s beautiful cherry blossoms that bloom only once a year, tourists resorted to rather inappropriate antics.

Some of these tourists have come under fire in Nanjing, China as they kicked and climbed trees in order to get good photographs or selfies with cherry blossom trees there.

A few of these photos were posted on social media and drew in negative criticism online.

One particular photo of a middle-aged woman climbing a tree with high heels attracted strong remarks. “With her heavy body weighing on those thin branches, isn’t she worried about falling off,” wrote one person, as quoted by South China Morning Post.

Others online commented that instead of just watching, someone from the crowd should have stepped up and stopped her from harming the tree.

Another picture which surfaced online depicted a man kicking a cherry blossom tree so its petals would fall loose and rain down on him.

About 150,000 tourists from all over China visit Jiming Temple, one of Nanjing’s oldest Buddhist temples, each day during the cherry blossom season, which lasts from the middle of March to early April.
