S Korea president orders nationwide alert as N Korea pursues solid-fuel missile

0

The South Korean military confirmed Thursday that North Korea is developing solid-fuel rockets – indicating that it is continuing to advance its missile attack capabilities — as President Park Geun-hye ordered security forces to strengthen their vigilance against further provocations.

Earlier in the day, North Korea’s state media Korea Central News Agency claimed that its leader Kim Jong-un guided a successful ground test of high-powered solid-fuel rocket engine, saying that the supposed breakthrough helped boost the power of the ballistic missiles.

“The Defence Ministry) believes that North Korea is at a stage of developing solid fuel (for missiles). … We believe it is attempting to boast the progress of its nuclear and missile programs,” said the ministry spokesman Moon Sang-kyun.

North Korea is currently using solid fuel for its KN-02 and FROG missiles, which have a range of under 200 kilometers. Scud, Rodong and other missiles with longer range are liquid-propellant.

The performance of a solid-fuel rocket is lower compared to that of liquid fuel. Experts say it is also harder to control since it continues to burn fuel upon ignition while liquid-fuel rocket has a device to control the fuel injection to adjust the altitude.

But the solid-fuel rockets can be stored for longer periods and launch on short notice. This means they are less likely to be exposed to satellites before launch, as the fuel does not have to be injected shortly before launch.

“Switching to solid fuels means that (North Korea) will be able to swiftly fire missiles any time,” Moon said.

Photos revealed Thursday by Rodong Sinmun, the mouthpiece of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, shows what Pyongyang claims to be a ground test of high-powered solid-fueled rocket engine.

South Korea is currently working to establish the “Kill Chain” missile defence system by the early 2020s, which can detect, identify and strike ballistic missiles within less than 30 minutes. But there has been concern that switching to solid fuels may allow the North to significantly shorten the time so its missiles can elude the defence system.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye responded by ordering a nationwide alert against the North’s comments.

“On threats by North Korea, the president ordered the nation to be on alert so the security of the people will not be compromised,” said Kim Sung-woo, chief presidential secretary for public affairs.

“She also requested the military to be fully prepared for any reckless provocations by the North.”

The remarks came a day after the North continued its saber rattling, threatening to attack Cheong Wa Dae.

The military said that it has been on full alert since the communist country conducted a nuclear testing on Jan. 6, in violation of the UN Security Council resolutions. Pyongyang also carried out a long-range rocket launch on Feb. 7, prompting the UN to pass what has been called the strongest sanctions in decades against it earlier this month.

The UN Human Rights Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution that requested instituting a group of experts to verify crimes against humanity committed by North Korea, and hold the perpetrators responsible. Delegations from China and Russia said they will “disassociate” themselves from the consensus.

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the adoption, and said that support for the resolution underscores the “deep concerns” of the international community about the human rights status in the reclusive state.

North Korea’s diplomatic mission in Geneva said the country would reject the resolution, claiming that it was politically motivated.

Football in the dock again as Adam Johnson jailed

0

LONDON – Football was accused of having a “cultural problem” as former England international Adam Johnson was sentenced to six years in prison after engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan.

Johnson, once a winger with Sunderland and Manchester City, was found guilty on Thursday following an incident in his Range Rover car in County Durham, northeast England, last year.

It has become increasingly commonplace to hear English football fans voicing their disillusionment with the cash-rich Premier League.

One criticism is that in paying the likes of Johnson a weekly wage of £60,000 (S$116,230), more than three times the average annual salary in the town where they play, clubs such as northeast side Sunderland have created a generation of spoilt players, who then expect to be indulged off the field as well.

It was a view that found echoes in a letter sent by Britain’s NSPCC children’s charity to the chairman of England’s governing Football Association, Greg Dyke, on Thursday.

“The NSPCC’s concern lies not in the behaviour of a single individual – although that is horrifying – but in the approach taken by Sunderland… We are worried this could be a cultural problem within football as a whole,” wrote Peter Wanless, the charity’s chief executive.

Johnson, 28, was sacked by struggling Premier League side Sunderland straight after his guilty plea.

But the fallout saw the club’s chief executive, Margaret Byrne, resign on March 8 after she accepted making a “serious mistake” in being party to letting Johnson play on for nearly a year despite knowing he had admitted to kissing a 15-year-old girl.

Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of England’s Professional Footballers’ Association, insisted his organisation took child protection seriously and that his members were aware of “danger zones” involving young female fans.

“It’s not as though we don’t know the law of the land and we don’t expect footballers to be immune from it,” Taylor told BBC Sport after Johnson was sentenced.

“Of course there will be times when there are danger zones. With young women, particularly girls, then that’s even more dangerous.

“So they (footballers) need to be very, very mindful and there’s a line beyond which they just do not cross,” insisted Taylor, who added the PFA needed to “work even harder on these child protection and safeguarding issues”.

Taylor said Johnson’s chances of playing professionally again were “very remote”, a view backed up by the experience of former Wales striker Ched Evans.

Evans, currently appealing against his conviction for raping a 19-year-old woman, was released from prison in October 2014. He then saw an attempt to resurrect his career with third-tier club Oldham Athletic collapse amid a public outcry.

That Johnson was later revealed, when reporting restrictions were lifted, to have also been arrested for possessing extreme pornography is unlikely to have shocked fans who have grown used to lurid tales involving footballers.

Star France striker Karim Benzema, cleared on all charges in an underage sex trial in Paris two years ago, was indefinitely suspended from international duty in December after he was placed under investigation over an attempt to bribe France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena for a sex tape.

It has still to be decided if Real Madrid forward Benzema will feature at the European Championships in France in June.

Passing sentence at Bradford Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Rose said Johnson had taken advantage of a “young teenager’s adoration with celebrity”.

But the recent imprisonment of several British entertainment industry figures showed football does not have a monopoly on illegal sexual conduct.

Apple working with Will.i.am, TV executives on original show

0

Apple Inc’s widely anticipated first original television show will feature the app economy.

The company is working with musician Will.i.am and two veteran television executives, Ben Silverman and Howard Owens, on the show, an Apple spokesman told Reuters, confirming media reports.

It was unclear how directly the TV show would promote or refer to Apple’s own app store, the New York Times, which first reported the development, said. Apple also declined to reveal the title, financing, timeline, storylines, episode length or how people would be able to access it, the report said.

The new series did not signal a broader ambition to greatly bolster presence in original productions and streaming video, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services, told the newspaper in an interview.

David Beckham buys land for Miami stadium

0

MIAMI – Former England football great David Beckham has taken a key step towards his goal of launching a Major League Football franchise by buying land for a stadium in Miami, one of his partners said Thursday.

Beckham’s group of investors acquired land in the Overtown neighborhood northwest of downtown in the Florida city.

“Big News: We’ve closed on our #Miami stadium site. Excited to bring a world-class @MLS club to our fans,” tweeted Beckham’s partner Marcelo Claure, CEO of Sprint telecom company.

Beckham, 40, has pursued the project for a 20,000-seat stadium since late 2013.

Several attempts to buy land at other sites failed in the face of opposition from residents and local authorities concerned about increased traffic in a city already afflicted by heavy congestion.

The Miami Beckham United group must now buy additional public land for parking and convince the city to permit construction, which will require overhauling zoning regulations, the Miami Herald reported.

“We have the right site, the right ownership group, and a loyal base of fans counting down the days until our first match,” the group said in a statement.

“We’re all-in on Overtown, and we couldn’t be more excited about moving forward with plans to deliver the most responsible stadium in Miami history.” Addressing concerns the stadium may not provide enough parking in the car-addicted city, the group said the site lies within walking distance of public transportation and downtown.

Beckham’s team is set to stage its MLS debut in 2018.

The former England captain’s contract to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007 gave him the option to create a new MLS team for the reduced price of $25 million.

His professional move to the United States was seen as a boon to a sport that remains overshadowed by American football, baseball and other homegrown sports.

Rolling Stones arrive in Cuba to play free rock concert

0

Havana – The Rolling Stones flew into Havana late Thursday for the British superstars’ first-ever concert in Cuba, state news agencies reported.

Hundreds of thousands of fans are expected to turn out Friday for the free-of-charge gig in Havana’s Ciudad Deportivo sports center.

Cuban state media forecasted that about 500,000 people could fill the playing fields, with music industry magazine Billboard reporting that as many people again could swarm into neighboring streets.

With no tickets on sale, it was impossible to confirm the estimates, but a million fans would amount to one of every 11 Cubans.

The concert – a surprise addition at the end of the Rolling Stones’ Latin America tour – was to be the first by such a major non-Spanish speaking group in communist Cuba.

Coming three days after a groundbreaking visit to Havana by US President Barack Obama, the event was widely seen as another step in Cuba’s emergence from years of cultural, ideological and economic isolation.

The one-party state run by the Castro brothers for more than half a century has long looked down on British and US rock as subversive.

Between the 1960s and 1990s, rock ‘n roll was discouraged to varying degrees, leading during the most repressive years to clandestine listening sessions and an underground trade in smuggled records and cassettes.

“A Rolling Stones concert in Havana? It’s a dream,” said Eddie Escobar, 45, who founded one of Havana’s few clubs for live rock music, the Yellow Submarine.

If ideology was once the reason that foreign rock ‘n roll was rare, today the barriers are mostly logistical and financial, with few major groups taking on the challenge – and none with the stature of the Rolling Stones.

Organizers told Billboard the stadium-level production meant importing gear in 61 sea containers and a packed Boeing 747.

Even if few Cubans are able to log on to Twitter, the band called on fans to vote via tweets for one of four songs to be included on the playlist: “Get Off of My Cloud,”

“All Down the Line,” “She’s So Cold,” and “You Got Me Rocking.”
