China arrests 6 over fake infant formula

0

SHANGHAI – Chinese authorities have arrested six people for making and selling fake infant formula as the popular US brand “Similac”, marketing the counterfeit product across seven provinces, a Shanghai government body said.

Abbott, maker of Similac, said separately on Tuesday that the case came to light in December and the fake goods had been traced and seized by the end of last year, according to a statement on its verified Chinese microblog.

The case is the latest scandal involving food safety in China. In 2008, several infants died and thousands fell ill because of baby milk powder tainted by a chemical additive, driving parents to seek out foreign brands of infant formula.

The Shanghai Municipal Food and Drug Administration said it was also tracking Internet sales of the fake milk powder, according to its statement released Monday.

State media reports have previously said the gang sold more than 17,000 cans, earning nearly 2 million yuan (S$419,130).

National authorities said the fake powder posed no safety risk.

In a separate case, a Chinese court last month sentenced 10 people to jail for as long as 15 years for selling fake beef jerky, state media reported.

That gang, in the eastern province of Zhejiang, used pork but added flavouring and pigment to make the product appear like beef, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Commercial hub Shanghai pursued a high-profile case against US food producer OSI Group for packaging out-of-date and substandard meat as new product, jailing six of its employees in February.

No need to be fairest of them all

South African-born actress Charlize Theron is not one to be concerned about maintaining her good looks.

Which is completely different from her beauty-obsessed character Queen Ravenna in 2012’s Snow White And The Huntsman and its sequel, The Huntsman: Winter’s War.

But the 40-year-old does not need to worry about her looks as she is one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood.

Theron is ravishing in person, with minimal make-up and dressed in a chiffon tunic paired with three-inch rocker booties.

“I think there is a lot of misplaced value in how women feel about themselves,” said the former model at a press conference yesterday at the Equarius Hotel in Resorts World Sentosa.

“Snow White may be a fairy tale, but there is a very strong story in there for women.”

The Oscar winner explained that Queen Ravenna’s obsession is a reflection on how “the society has made youth a very strong currency among women”.

Theron was in Singapore with her The Huntsman: Winter’s War co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain for the Asian leg of the publicity tour, as was director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War opens here on April 14 and is based on characters from the Snow White and The Snow Queen fairy tales. It explores Queen Ravenna’s backstory, including her obsession with beauty and youth, and the relationship with her younger sister, Queen Freya (Emily Blunt).

Hemsworth and Chastain play Eric and Sara, two huntsmen caught between the two sisters.

Theron felt the story is “powerful as it showed how lonely and desperate Ravenna is despite having good looks”.

“I constantly worry for my little girl and for other girls. I want (them) to know that they are worth so much more than how they look.”

But does the mother of two adopted children – four-year-old boy Jackson and eight-month-old girl August – see herself as a role model for the fairer sex?

“I think there is a sense of responsibility to myself as a woman. I want to do something authentic and truthful, something that will resonate with other women.

OWNERSHIP

“Women have to take ownership and start changing the concept that we wilt like flowers, while men age like fine wine.”

Theron said one factor that made her agree to star in the sequel was to be in the same film as English actress Blunt.

“If Emily isn’t married, I’d marry her instantly… I love her so much,” Theron proclaimed with a laugh.

“We had instant chemistry from the first moment we got together. We just couldn’t stop chattering.”

Theron said having Chastain in the movie made filming even more fun.

“Jessica and Emily are two actresses whom I really admire… they are my peers, but they are also the people who raise the bar for me as an actor.

“Their work are so inspiring. To get to work with not one but two really strong powerhouses together is an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Singapore basketball player invited to join Thai pro team

0

The Singapore Slingers’ stirring run to the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) final captured the imagination of fans here and also made foreign teams take notice of their players.

Thailand Basketball League’s (TBL) Dunkin Raptors have made an approach to sign 2.02m centre Delvin Goh for the upcoming season from June to August.

It is believed that he is the first local cager to be invited to sign for a foreign professional team, at least in recent years.

All six teams in the TBL are allowed to sign one world import, while the bottom three clubs can register an extra ASEAN import.

The Raptors finished bottom of the standings last season.

Goh, who turns 21 next Thursday, confirmed the news with The New Paper yesterday, but said he could well turn the offer down.

“I have yet to receive my enlistment notice and, if it clashes with the TBL season, then I will most likely go for National Service because it is compulsory and I don’t like to trouble anyone for a deferment,” he explained.

Goh signed for the Slingers as a 16-year-old when he already was nearly two metres tall and has improved by leaps and bounds.

As a starter this season, he averaged 3.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game across 28 matches, as the Slingers made the ABL Finals for the first time.

And the Raptors took notice.

“Their general manager Pete Aphaisuwan contacted me on Facebook last week and my initial reaction was a mix of shock and excitement,” Goh recounted.

“I had to make sure that everything was real and I had a discussion with (Slingers general manager) Michael Johnson, and he knows of Pete, so I felt more assured.

“If it happens, this would be good exposure for Singapore basketball, and it would open doors for the next generation.

“Currently, most ASEAN imports are Filipinos, so this could let others know that there are good basketballers in Singapore, too.

“Someone has to take the first step and it would be a great honour if that’s going to be me. I will continue to work hard and perform to the best of my abilities.”

The Slingers’ lost the Finals series to the Westports Malaysia Dragons 3-2.

IMPRESSIVE

En route, Goh impressed in the semi-final triumph over Hi-Tech Bangkok City.

The final-year Nanyang Polytechnic electrical computer communications engineering student put up a superb performance in Game 2 in Thailand, scoring 12 points and restricting the ABL’s top defensive player Christien Charles – he averaged 17.9 points per game in the regular season – to 13 points.

After that 95-66 rout, Goh proved he wasn’t a one-off when Charles scored just eight points in a 68-60 home win that sent the Slingers to the Finals.

Johnson believes Goh represents a big breakthrough for Singapore basketball.

“There are many foreign players the Thai teams can go for, but they have set their eyes on a Singaporean,” he said.

“Delvin is a good player who has performed well in the ABL this season.

“While we wish him well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves because he is still a young player with a long road ahead of him.”

Indonesia to scrutinise names in Panama Papers

0

JAKARTA – Indonesia’s tax authority will scrutinise taxpayers named in the data leaked from a Panamanian law firm as part of efforts to chase their offshore undeclared assets, the country’s finance minister said on Tuesday.

“I have told the tax office to study the data in the Panama Papers,” Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro told reporters. “We will confirm the data that we have now with the documents or use them complementarily,” he added.

The tax office already has a separate set of data about”paper companies” Indonesians have set up in tax haven countries from different sources, Brodjonegoro said, adding that authorities have started to review them.

On Tuesday, Brodjonegoro reiterated he hopes a tax amnesty plan will dissuade companies from tax treaty shopping. The amnesty, which offers hefty tax discounts to individuals and companies who declare concealed untaxed wealth, would allow special purpose vehicles to declare or repatriate money stashed overseas.

State revenue in resource-rich Indonesia is expected to miss its 2016 target by 250 trillion rupiah (S$25.6 billion), based on official forecasts, as commodity prices remain low. Brodjonegoro has said extra revenue from the amnesty plan can cover some of the shortfall.

The parliament will begin debating the tax amnesty bill this month.
