Millenium Falcon to make Legoland Malaysia its base until end of May
It’s not in a galaxy far, far away but somewhere closer to home: Johor Bahru.
That’s where the world’s largest Millenium Falcon, the famous space freighter from Star Wars, made from Lego bricks will be stationed till the end of May.
Legoland Malaysia, in collaboration with the Lego Group, will have Asia’s only master builder father-and-son team – Daniel and Christopher Steininger – build it using more than 200,000 bricks from April 30.
The spaceship will be finished on May 3. Visitors to the exhibition are welcome to place a brick on the massive creation during this period.
Thila Munusamy, director of sales and marketing for Lego said, “The father and son duo is meant to portray family bonding and, hopefully, encourage parents to bring their children for a fun time at the event”.
She also told AsiaOne at a press conference today that since the event is based on the six episodes of the franchise, it would be a good opportunity for parents and their children to bond since it will allow the adults to share their Star Wars love with their kids.
Other than the Millenium Falcon, Legoland visitors will also get to help build two TIE Fighters, also from the movie franchise, on May 7 and 8.
During that weekend, Legoland will have a flurry of activities to celebrate all things Star Wars such as a real-life Imperial March led by an army of Stormtroopers and Darth Vader, alongside a variety of characters from the franchise.
There will also be a social media competition April 21 to May 8 where parents and children can get involved together. Parents can partner their children in the buidling of their dream Lego Star Wars starship. They will need to upload a photograph of their creation on to Legoland Malaysia Resorts’ Facebook page with “#MasterYourForce” and “#LEGOStarWarsDays”. 10 winners will be picked and special prizes will be awarded on May 14.
“We want fans to feel personally involve in the whole process, that is why we are organising various social media competitions with attractive prizes”, said Nitika Nagpal, regional brand manager for Lego.
She added that there was no point in organising a large scale event like this if fans are just going to be spectators.

China announces restrictions on trade with N Korea
BEIJING – China on Tuesday banned imports of gold and rare earths from North Korea as well as exports to the country of jet fuel and other oil products used to make rocket fuel, a move in line with new United Nations sanctions on Pyongyang.
The Security Council unanimously passed a resolution in early March expanding UN sanctions aimed at starving North Korea of funds for its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes after Pyongyang conducted a fourth nuclear test in January and launched a long-range rocket in February.
The mining sector is a key part of North Korea’s economy, which is already largely cut off from the rest of the world. Experts believe revenue from the sector helps underwrite North Korea’s military expenditures.
The ministry said it would also ban coal shipments from North Korea, although it made exemptions consistent with sanctions, including uses intended for “the people’s well-being”and not connected to nuclear or missile programmes.
North Korea delivered around 20 million tonnes of coal to China last year, up 27 per cent on the year, overtaking Russia and Mongolia to become China’s third biggest supplier, behind Australia and Indonesia.
An exception was made for coal originating in third countries and supplied via North Korea’s port of Rason. Landlocked Mongolia, looking for alternative supply routes for its commodities, has already signed an agreement with the port that gave its exporters preferential treatment.
Export bans on jet and rocket fuel included exemptions for “basic humanitarian needs” in conjunction with inspections, and for civilian passenger jets flying outside of North Korea.
Other restricted minerals include vanadium and titanium, both used in steel alloys.
Independent experts have frequently questioned China’s resolve to enforce sanctions against North Korea, whose economy is heavily dependent on its neighbour. China has said it will enforce the measures “conscientiously”.
US State Department officials have expressed optimism the sanctions will be more effective than earlier attempts to curtail North Korea’s nuclear programme, pointing to China’s apparent willingness to support them.
China disapproves of North Korea’s nuclear programme, although, as its sole major ally, it has supplied large quantities of aid off the books for decades.

Caught on camera: Taxi driver sacked for reckless driving
SINGAPORE – A CityCab taxi driver has been sacked after a video circulating on social media showed the driver speeding off after crashing into a stationary car in an open-air car park in Redhill.
ComfortDelGro’s group communications officer Ms Tammy Tan said in a statement to AsiaOne: “For driving recklessly, we have terminated the hiring agreement of the cabby.”
The transport operator runs the Comfort and CityCab fleets.
Facebook user Evon Lim posted the footage yesterday evening and shared it with the Singapore Taxi Drivers’ Facebook group.
The video footage, which lasts about a minute, was taken off a dashboard camera of a car. It starts with one car exiting the car park.
The taxi driver is briefly seen getting into his vehicle before it suddenly reverses at a high speed and slams into a silver parked car. The impact is so hard that both the silver car and the back of the taxi lift off ground.
The cab continues to reverse into the silver car a bit more before speeding away from the car park.
Ms Tan added in the statement that “what was not captured on footage is the fact that he [the taxi driver] had stopped his taxi further down the road, went back to the scene of the incident and passed his particulars to a shopowner who knew the owner of the car.”
“We are thankful that no one was injured in this incident and are assisting the owner of the parked vehicle with all repairs,” said Ms Tan.
The incident is said to have taken place at about noon on March 26. The Facebook post has amassed over 14,500 shares and over 2,200 likes so far.
