IKEA China denies publicity stunt after half-naked woman snapped in store

IKEA China has issued a statement denying that it had orchestrated a nude publicity stunt, after a half-naked woman was snapped walking around the store.

The snaps uploaded online to micro-blogging site Weibo showed the bare-bottomed woman sitting on a bed and pushing a trolley around the store, among other poses.

Customers were shown shopping in the background, seemingly oblivious to the stunt.

According to Chinese site Tencent, the user who uploaded the images told a reporter that they were taken by a friend, allegedly in a Beijing store.

The photos were removed after police tracked down the uploader.

However, a second set of photos resurfaced, but was also quickly deleted, Shanghaiist reported.

In its statement, IKEA refuted claims that it had employed such tactics to generate publicity. “There is speculation about the behavior of IKEA as it opens up new stores. IKEA strongly denies this speculation.” It added that it had reported the incident to the authorities.

Last year, Uniqlo in China had also been accused of being behind a viral video which showed a couple having sex in a fitting room.

Uniqlo released a statement urging customers to use its changing rooms the “correct way” after the incident.

Chinese man beats machine in facial recognition in contest

A contest on facial recognition between an artificial intelligent biometric machine and a man took place on Thursday in Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang province.

“Mark”, the AI biometric machine, lost to Wang Yiheng, a former contestant in the game show The Brain, in a three-round contest where the two competed in recognising large numbers of photos of the faces of cyber celebrities.

In the first round where “Mark” and Wang were requested to identify the faces of cyber celebrities present at the contest from 150 photos, “Mark” beat Wang by six minutes. In the second round, the two were asked to identify 300 photos and the AI machine lost by just more than a minute. The scores were even in the third round.

Wang first shot to prominence in the second season of The Brain, a TV programme which shows people with exceptional brainpower, in 2015. He once correctly picked out a specific cup of water from 520 cups and identified four lip prints from 700 lipstick prints.

“Mark” is the brainchild of Zhejiang Ant Small & Micro Financial Services Group, e-commerce giant Alibaba’s financial affiliate.

It can be used in verification of ID in online finance and it can identify images one-on-one in ID verification, account logging, or password recovery, which is unlike the search for one facial image from a reservoir of photos, according to its developer team.

Don't mess with this granny! 76-year-old woman wows Internet with martial arts skills

She may be 76, but don’t underestimate her because she will likely kick your butt.

The septuagenerian, named Meenakshiamma, has become well-known across India after a video of her sparring with a man who appears to be much younger was posted online.

The short clip shows the pair wielding sticks at breathtaking speed while surrounded by a large crowd of cheering onlookers.

Meenakshiamma’s strength and agility quickly becomes apparent as she easily takes control of the fight with a combination of defensive and offensive manoeuvres as she moves her much younger opponent to the edge of the fighting ring.

All the while, the sari she is wearing stays firmly tucked in place.

According to online reports, the pair are practising an ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu, which is considered to be one of the oldest known fighting styles in the world.

The display reportedly took place in Vatakara, a town in the southern Indian state of Kerala, where the martial art is believed to have originated.

Kalaripayattu is a combination of steps, postures and fighting styles. But each region has different styles which are distinguished by their different attacking and defensive patterns, India TV reported.

According to Indian Express, Meenakshiamma is a master exponent of the martial art, having practised it since she was just 10 years old. She has also trained hundreds of students in her town, many of whom have themselves become teachers.

The video of the performance, which was taken via mobile phone from a member of the audience, quickly went viral since it was posted on Facebook page India Arising, getting over 1.4 million views.
