RIO DE JANEIRO – “Stratospheric” Fiji claimed their first Olympic medal ever by hammering Britain 43-7 to win the inaugural men’s rugby sevens final at the Rio Games on Thursday.
Fiji captain Osea Kolinisau led the defending Sevens World Series champions as they ruthlessly won the first Olympic rugby competition in 92 years.
He got the first of five first-half tries, two converted, for a 29-0 lead that a leaden-footed Britain never looked like matching.
“I’m a little bit lost for words. The boys were on another scale of phenomenal,” Fiji’s English coach Ben Ryan said. “They were just stratospheric and they saved the best until last.
“They played some high-risk rugby there and they were outstanding and, hopefully, we showcased Fijian rugby and everybody who was watching, maybe even the British supporters, can have a smile. Just the way we wanted to play the game.
“It’s always been our plan for three years, get them back to number one, win world titles and then claim this first gold medal.” In a sevens masterclass, the Fijians avoided contact and the long-pass game, putting faith in Ryan’s “no reward without risk” gameplan of off-loading to keep possession.
The Pacific islanders starved the British of the ball, competing successfully at every re-start and refusing to panic on the few occasions they threatened.
The outstanding Kolinisau got his side on the scoreboard, riding Tom Mitchell’s tackle to touch down in the corner.
Jerry Tuwai followed soon after with Britain’s defence failing to cope with the Pacific islanders’ off-loading brilliance.
Jasa Veremalua, Leone Nakarawa and Vatemo Ravouvou all crossed in quick succession, two conversions from skipper Kolinisau handing Fiji the mammoth 29-0 half-time lead.

Another Semi Kunatani off-load saw blockbusting Toulon winger Josua Tuisova go in under the posts, the British defence left clueless at their rivals’ cool, deft play.

A Rosko Specman hat-trick and a Cecil Afrika double proved the bedrock for the convincing victory for the reigning Commonwealth champions and second seeds in Rio.
“We’re not the biggest or the fastest team but we work hard for one another and we managed to get fourth. It’s not often that Japan ranks higher than Australia and New Zealand in rugby,” said Japan playmaker Lomano Lemeki.
“The intensity and the way that South Africa played, right from the very first kick-off, had us on the back heel the whole time.” Afrika added: “We were deeply disappointed in the manner that we played in the semi-final, but a bronze medal is a fantastic finish for us.”

Closed-circuit television footage of a man who saws down a tree to take a bicycle in central China has surfaced.
The video, shared on China’s People’s Daily, was reportedly taken on Monday (Aug 8) in Changsha. The time stamp on the video is 5.44am, August 8, 2016.
It shows the man arriving on a scooter and starting to saw the trunk of the tree to which a bicycle is padlocked.
After about a minute, he is seen walking back to his scooter as another motorist passes by.
Once the vehicle passes, he goes back to sawing the tree. After the tree topples, he picks up the bicycle and places it on his scooter.
People’s Daily labelled the footage “appalling”, while some Chinese netizens jokingly commented on his “creativity”.
According to Chinese reports, the man made at least one earlier visit to the camphor tree at 5.30am.
A Changsha police spokesman said that the tree is about five to six years old, and is worth about 1000 (S$202) to 2000 yuan.
He added that it would have been easier to cut the lock on the bicycle than to cut the tree.
However, it is not certain that this is a case of theft, the police said, adding that it could be that the man is the owner of the bicycle who had forgotten his key.

SELANGOR – Singer Taufik Batisah could not figure out why Sabri Yunus cast him as the lead in Dukun Doktor Dani.
“I was scared to ask him initially. I told myself to find out when we do the press interviews for the movie,” said the Singaporean.
The veteran actor-director who is famed for notable television drama series like Sanggul Berdarah, confessed that he is not a fan of Taufik’s most popular hit song, #AwakKatMane.
“I don’t think it’s meant for someone my age,” said Sabri, 54.
In Dukun Doktor Dani, 34-year-old Taufik plays the titular character Dani.
After losing a patient during an operation, an emotionally distressed Dani quits the medical profession and retreats to his home town.
Then, he meets Sudin (Sabri), a traditional medicine practitioner, and decides to work with him.
However, other village folk start accusing Dani of exploiting Sudin’s reputation to establish his own medical practice in the kampung.
The comedy-drama also stars Fasha Sandha, Khatijah Tan and Amerul Affendi.
Sabri shared that he had the idea for Dukun Doktor Dani 30 years ago. He described it as an old story inspired by the lives of those in the kampung.
Despite his light-hearted approach, the movie bears a serious message about accountability.
“It’s basically about someone who is so disappointed by his own failures that he stops offering his service or gift.
“He thinks by doing so, he can prevent more deaths. But he ends up ‘killing’ more people, especially his own mother,” he said.
Dani has a close relationship with his mother (Khatijah) which is something that Taufik could easily relate to.
“I’m a mummy’s boy in real life.
“I know what it’s like to be someone who is scared to let their loved ones down.”
Previously, the Singapore Idol winner had acted in telemovie Demi Adriana and stage musical Fried Rice Paradise.
Dukun Doktor Dani is his feature film debut.
To combat his nerves, he even got some advice from wife Sheena Akbal.
“She told me to not be shy about asking for help.
“She also reminded me to rehearse and be well-prepared with my lines,” he said.
Taufik is ready to face any criticism about his performance in Dukun Doktor Dani.
“After 12 years in the entertainment industry, I learnt that criticism comes with the job.
“I’m willing to accept any feedback and apply it to my next project, whether it’s in acting or music.”
