Everyone knows Mr S R Nathan as the former President of Singapore – but he has also done so much more behind the scenes and changed the lives of everyday people.
Mr Nathan found himself at the centre of a prank in May this year by The Hidden Good, a local social enterprise that aims to highlight the good in people.
A video of the prank shows an unsuspecting Mr Nathan, who’s led to thinking that he’s at an event to present an award to an outstanding Singaporean but the recipient turns out to be himself.
At the award ceremony, a video presentation showed interviewees sharing how Mr Nathan had selflessly changed their lives for the better.

Easy, free Wi-Fi access for visitors to US cities
Singapore visitors to three cities in the United States can now access the Internet through free public Wi-Fi more conveniently.
Both Singapore and the US are testing a service which allows users to automatically connect to Wi-Fi hot spots after a one-time sign-up on their mobile devices.
From yesterday to Sept 21, they can connect to more than 1,000 Wi-Fi hot spots in San Jose, San Francisco and New York cities without needing to repeatedly key in their username and password when they move from one hot spot to another.
This feature is enabled after they download a configuration file and perform a one-time setup for auto-connection to the participating cities’ hot spots.

This is part of a trial that the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) is working on with the Wireless Broadband Alliance City Wi-Fi Roaming Project, as part of the World Wi-Fi Day initiative.
Visitors from the United States on the T-Mobile network will be able to enjoy similar convenience on Singapore’s Wireless@SG network.
They can gain access to the Republic’s free public Wi-Fi network by registering their United States SIM card for Wireless@SG. This method, called SIM-login, is now available only for Singapore SIM cards.
American visitors will be connected automatically to the trial’s 290 hot spots located on Sentosa and at major MRT stations.
IDA is working with the Land Transport Authority, Sentosa Development Corporation and telcos M1 and Singtel on this trial.
IDA assistant chief executive Khoong Hock Yun said: “Trialling the SIM-login method for foreign visitors is something new to us, and we hope to gather new insights, fine-tune technical challenges, and enhance the Wireless@SG programme further.”

Singapore’s former president S.R. Nathan dies, state funeral on Friday
SINGAPORE’S sixth and longest-serving president Sellapan Ramanathan died Monday at age 92, the government announced.
The former leader widely known as S.R. Nathan was put in intensive care after he suffered a stroke on July 31. It was his second stroke in less than two years.
“The late Mr. Nathan passed away peacefully at Singapore General Hospital on Monday,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
“The Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues are sad to learn of the passing of Mr SR Nathan and would like to convey their condolences to his family.”
Ramanathan served two terms as Singapore’s head of state from 1999 to 2011 he was succeeded by Tony Tan Keng Yam.

He held top positions in the civil service and was appointed high commissioner to Malaysia in 1988. From 1990 to 1996, Ramanathan served as Singapore’s ambassador to the United States.
According to Straits Times, Nathan’s remains will lie in state on Thursday at Parliament House, where the public can pay their last respects. The government will also hold a state funeral service on Friday.
Just after his stroke in July, social media in Singapore went abuzz with accounts of Ramanathan’s humble beginnings and how he had started work without completing his studies.
On Facebook, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong paid tribute to the iconic leader.
“His was a story of how a young boy strove to triumph over his circumstances and make a contribution to society. He held many public service posts, and occupied the highest office in the land,” Lee said.
“He was a warm and approachable president who endeared himself to Singaporeans. I remember him as a man guided by a deep sense of duty to the nation. He stepped up each time duty called. He was a true son of Singapore.”
