Malaysia extends million-ringgit incentive to Rio paralympians
KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s para-athletes have an added motivation in their quest for the nation’s first gold medal at the Rio Paralympics.
The Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has announced that the para-athletes will receive the same incentive scheme as their able-bodied counterparts.
Malaysian Paralympians bound for Rio can take a shot at the RM1million (S$336,686) reward for gold, RM300,000 for silver and RM100,000 for bronze.
Khairy added that they stand to get lifetime allowance of RM5,000, RM3,000 and RM2,000 for striking gold, silver and bronze.
There’s more good news as the allowances will also be backdated to cover all previous medallists at the Paralympics.
In Beijing, Malaysia won a one bronze through Siow Lee Chan in women’s powerlifting. In London four years ago, archer Hasihin Sanawi took silver in the individual recurve for the W1 category while Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli bagged bronze in the shot putt.
The previous incentive scheme for the Paralympics was RM300,000 for gold, RM200,000 for silver and RM100,000 for bronze.
“Nobody cares about the para-athletes before this but I am happy there are more awareness and news on their exploits.
“I have delivered on my promise and the government will certainly deliver if any of you win a medal in Rio.
“We should aim to do better than London as some of you are targeted for medals. Hopefully, we will end our gold medal wait.
“I hope all of you have the winning mentality. For those who are not medal prospects, they must try for personal bests or national records,” said Khairy to the para-athletes.
Led by chef de mission Dr Ang Kean Koo, Malaysia’s 21 athletes (19 men and two women) will depart for Rio on Tuesday.
Malaysia will compete in eight out of the 23 sports in the Paralympic programme.
Hopes of a historic gold medal rests on the shoulders of sprinter Mohd Ridzuan Mohd Puzi and long jumper Abdul Latif Romli.
The duo were gold medallists at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar last year. Ridzuan won the 100m in the T36 category while Abdul Latif leapt to a new Games record of 7.35m in the T20 category.

Drug users aren't human: Philippines' Duterte
MANILA – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who is waging a bloody war on crime, has justified the large-scale killing of drug users by suggesting the victims were not human.
Duterte, who has seen about two thousand people killed since he was elected in May, made the remarks late Friday (Aug 26) as he shrugged off the United Nations’ concerns over human rights in his country.
“Crime against humanity? In the first place, I’d like to be frank with you: are they humans? What is your definition of a human being?” he told soldiers while visiting an army camp, according to transcripts of his speech released afterwards.
“Human rights? Use it properly in the right context if you have the brains,” he added.
“You cannot wage a war without killing,” Duterte said, adding that many drug users were beyond rehabilitation.

His remarks came after various UN officials, including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in June condemned his apparent support for extra-judicial killings.
The UN special rapporteur on summary executions, Agnes Callamard, said earlier this month that his directives “amount to incitement to violence and killing, a crime under international law”.
Duterte’s comments come after his national police chief Ronald Dela Rosa on Friday urged drug users to kill their traffickers and burn their homes.
“Why don’t you give them a visit, pour gasoline on their homes and set these on fire to register your anger,” Dela Rosa said.
He later apologised for his remarks.
But Duterte defended Dela Rosa, saying “that’s my style. He is following it”.
Duterte also taunted the United Nations, saying “they want me to go prison? Do those idiots think I will be captured alive. My God, we will be together in hell.”
Earlier this week, Dela Rosa told senators that over 750 people had been killed by police in anti-drug operations while more than a thousand had been slain by shadowy figures. Since then, even more people have been killed.
Duterte, 71, won May elections in a landslide on a promise to kill tens of thousands of suspected criminals to prevent the Philippines from becoming a narco-state.
He has vowed to protect policemen who may be charged as part of the campaign.

Man catches wife on CCTV beating and strangling 1-year-old son
A man who suspected his wife of assaulting their son set up a CCTV camera, only to confirm his worst fears.
The woman from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, was caught on camera beating and strangling their 1-year-old child.
The husband, Deepak, told ANI: “I suspected that my wife beats our son, hence got a CCTV camera installed (in the house).”
In the video, mother and child are sitting on the bed, before she suddenly puts an arm around his neck and lifts him up .
She then roughly sets him face-down on the bed, forcefully slapping his backside several times with both her hands.

According to the Hindustan Times, the husband, Deepak, said he got suspicious after finding bruises on the boy’s body.
In a video interview with ANI, the husband tearfully says his wife, Poonam, has also dashed the child’s head against the wall.
Deepak has submitted the footage to authorities and wants to see his wife prosecuted.
According to the Hindustan Times, Poonam’s father claims Deepak used to harass her for dowry and used violence on her, accusations which Deepak has denied.
