Football: Mourinho feels heat as Wenger marks anniversary

0

Jose Mourinho has vowed to silence the critics when Manchester United face champions Leicester, while his old rival Arsene Wenger hopes to celebrate a memorable milestone with a rare success against Chelsea on Saturday.

Mourinho finds himself under fire less than two months into his United reign after three successive defeats and an unconvincing League Cup win at third tier Northampton.

United are already trailing six points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City and another setback at Old Trafford this weekend would be a huge blow to Mourinho’s bid to stamp his authority on an team that has underachieved in recent years.

After winning their first three league matches under Mourinho, as well as beating Leicester in the Community Shield, United lost to City and Watford, either side of a Europa League defeat at Feyenoord.

Mourinho’s tactics and team selections have been called into question, while there have been suggestions the manager’s public criticism of individual players, including injury-plagued defender Luke Shaw, has not gone down well in the dressing room.

Seeing off minnows Northampton did little to quell the rising tide of discontent but, in typically bullish fashion, Mourinho has come out fighting.

“We had a bad week. I know the world is full of Einsteins. I know they tried to delete 16 years of my career,” Mourinho moaned.

“They tried to delete an unbelievable history of Manchester United and to focus on a bad week with three bad results. But that’s the new football, it’s full of Einsteins.” That Mourinho is at a low ebb on the same weekend that Wenger celebrates his 20th anniversary as Arsenal manager won’t have been lost on the Frenchman.

Wenger, who has endured many barbs from Mourinho in the past, faces Chelsea looking to improve on a woeful record of five wins in his last 31 meetings against the Blues.

His last major milestone – his 1,000th match as Arsenal manager – was spoilt by a 6-0 thrashing at Stamford Bridge.

But having seen a second-string team win 4-0 at Nottingham Forest in the League Cup in midweek, following a 4-1 success at Hull last weekend, Wenger is confident the depth of his squad will help restore order after a sluggish start to the season.

“We have four days to prepare for the (Chelsea) game, let’s focus on that now,” Wenger said.

“The performance shows that the players who played at Hull need to be on their toes and that’s what we want – competition for places.” Chelsea go into the London derby buoyed by a 4-2 League Cup win at Leicester in which they came from 2-0 down.

One player desperate to feature at the Emirates is Cesc Fabregas, who made his name as a player under Wenger at Arsenal.

The Spain midfielder is yet to start in the league this season, but having scored twice in extra time at Leicester, he is hopeful of forcing his way into Antonio Conte’s line-up at the Emirates.

“It’s a new situation for me in my career after 13 years of basically playing all the time for my club and national team,” Fabregas said.

“And it’s been tough, I’m not going to deny it. But the last thing I will do is complain or put my hands up and give in.” Table-topping City head to Swansea for the second time this week after winning 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium in the League Cup.

City have won all nine matches under boss Pepe Guardiola, including five in the league, and the Spaniard kept his team in south Wales to aid their recovery time during a busy period.

Even so, changes are certain as Sergio Aguero is back from suspension and captain Vincent Kompany is struggling with an injury suffered in midweek.

“I want us to recover well, and train well, prepare as well as possible for our game in Swansea, for our game in the Champions League and for Tottenham away,” Guardiola said.

Second placed Everton travel to Bournemouth aiming to bounce back from their first defeat, a midweek League Cup loss to Norwich, since Dutch coach Ronald Koeman took charge.

Celebratory parade for Singapore Paralympic heroes starts 9am tomorrow

0

A convoy of Ferraris will be the centre of attention on the roads from Sengkang Sports Centre to VivoCity tomorrow morning for a celebratory parade for Team Singapore’s Paralympians.

Eleven para-athletes, including medallists Yip Pin Xiu and Theresa Goh, and Rio Paralympics chef de mission Ho Cheng Kwee, will be waving to crowds of well-wishers from the supercars.

Boccia players Nurulasyiqah Taha and Toh Sze Ning will be driven in a more spacious London cab as their mobility is more restricted.

Tomorrow’s parade will celebrate Singapore’s best-ever showing at the Paralympics in Rio, where swimmers Yip and Goh won two golds and a bronze respectively.

Starting at 9am at Sengkang Sports Centre, Minister of State for Health Dr Lam Pin Min will deliver a congratulatory message.

The convoy will then pass Sengkang Community Centre, Hougang Sports Centre, Braddell Heights Community Centre, Blocks 43 and 44 at Bendemeer Road and Bugis Junction before arriving at their second pit stop at the National Library at 11.15am.

The Paralympians will be greeted by Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim and Central Singapore District Mayor Denise Phua.

The president of the Singapore Management University students’ association will give an appreciation speech, while Pathlight School students will be presenting tokens of appreciation to the para-athletes.

The convoy will then pass the Pinnacle@Duxton before arriving at the final stop at VivoCity at 1.30pm, where they will be received by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu.

Among those who will be packing VivoCity are manager Christine Chen, 50, and her family, including her 14-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter.

She said: “I want to be there to show my support for them. I hope to prepare something to give to them that is simple yet special and that they can keep for a long time.”

South Korea says time to reconsider North Korea's UN membership

0

South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se accused North Korea on Thursday of”totally ridiculing” the authority of the United Nations through its nuclear and missile tests and said it was time to reconsider whether it was qualified for UN membership.

In an address to the annual United Nations General Assembly, Yun said the UN security Council should adopt “stronger, comprehensive” sanctions on North Korea after its fifth nuclear test on Sept. 9 and close loopholes in existing measures. “North Korea’s repeated violations and non-compliance of Security Council resolutions and international norms is unprecedented and has no parallel in the history of the UN,”Yun said. “North Korea is totally ridiculing the authority of the General Assembly and the Security Council,” he said. “Therefore, I believe it is high time to seriously reconsider whether North Korea is qualified as a peace-loving UN member, as many countries are already questioning.” Yun said North Korea had not only advanced its nuclear and missile capacity, but publicly threatened to use those weapons preemptively. He said it was the “last chance” to put a brake on its nuclear ambitions.

Yun also called for action against North Korea’s violations of the rights of its own people, and said there should be greater focus on North Korean workers abroad and the possible diversion of their wages to weapons programs.

Discussions are already under way on a possible new UN sanctions resolution on North Korea after its latest nuclear test.

Analysts and diplomats say much depends on China’s attitude.

China is North Korea’s main ally, but has been angered by its repeated missile and nuclear tests and backed tough UN sanctions on Pyongyang in March. At the same time, it has repeatedly called for a return to international talks to resolve the issue, in spite of the skepticism of other world powers.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang told the General Assembly on Wednesday countries must remain committed to denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, while seeking a solution to the North Korean nuclear issue through dialogue.

The United States said Li and US President Barack Obama agreed in New York on Monday to step up co-operation in the UN Security Council and in law enforcement channels Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Wednesday the threat posed by North Korea was “substantially more serious”than in the past and demanded an “entirely distinct” response.

Gigi Hadid Elbowed a Rude Prankster in the Face at Milan Fashion Week

0

Gigi Hadid didn’t waste any time to defend herself when a prankster manhandled her at Milan Fashion Week.

In a video released by TMZ, Gigi is seen being lifted off the ground by Ukrainian prankster Vitalii Sediuk (who was wearing a disguise) as she and sister Bella were exiting the venue.

She then elbowed him in the face and attempted to chase him down the street as he ran away.

“Find the guy!” she tells her security team as she got in the car after the incident. And we hope they did find him because what he did can count for assault.

Vitalii is widely known as a “serial prankster” with high-profile victims which include Madonna, Will Smith, Anna Wintour, and Brad Pitt.

After pranking the latter in 2014―he buried his face in Brad’s crotch during the Maleficent premiere, JSYK―he was sentenced to three months probation, a year of psychiatric counseling, and even blacklisted from flying back to the US.

He was also told to stay 500 feet away from any red carpet event. So yeah, the guy’s pretty messed up.

Since then, Gigi has posted a series of tweets to explain what happened after articles portrayed her as the bad guy.

She also gave advice to other girls who might experience the same thing and more importantly, she thanked her boxing coach.

Gigi expressed that she’s not going to fire her MFW security team for (obviously) being lax during the incident.

Meanwhile, Vitalii released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, saying that he wanted to make a statement about “cute girls on Instagram” taking over high-fashion.

“While I consider Gigi Hadid beautiful, she and her friend Kendall Jenner have nothing to do with high fashion. By doing this, I encourage the fashion industry to put true talents on the runway and Vogue covers instead of well-connected cute girls from Instagram,” Vitalii says.

And when he was told that his stunt is an assault to women, he replies, “Don’t be over-dramatic.”

I hope someone kicks him in the face next time because he may have a point, but he surely has a poor way of making a statement.
