Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has been charged with a breach of betting rules for placing 44 bets on football matches this year, the Scottish Football Association (SFA) said on Wednesday.
Barton, who joined Rangers in the close season, has a history of disciplinary problems and is currently suspended by his club following a training-ground dispute with a team mate.
SFA rules prevent players, coaches, club officials and referees in Scotland from betting on football anywhere in the world.
The SFA said in a statement that Barton had been charged with placing the bets between July 1 and Sept. 15. He has until Oct. 12 to respond and his hearing will take place on Oct. 27.
Barton, who has also played for Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queen’s Park Rangers and Burnley, is no stranger to controversy having served bans for violent conduct on and off the pitch during his career.
He broke a pedestrian’s leg while driving his car in 2005 and was jailed for six months in 2008 after admitting assault and affray.
The 34-year-old Englishman is due to return from a three-week suspension on Monday following a training-ground dispute with team mate Andy Halliday.
BEIJING – A doctor in eastern China as been stabbed to death after his assailant’s baby died shortly after birth.
Dr Li Baohua, 34, of Laigang Hospital in Laiwu, in Shandong province, was stabbed 15 times – 12 times in the head – in his office on Monday (Oct 3) morning by the angry father of the baby girl, reported the South China Morning Post, citing The Beijing News. The attacker has been identified as Chen Jianli.
Chen reportedly carried out the attack after bringing a knife and dagger into the hospital, keeping the weapons hidden in a shoulder bag. He then went to Dr Li’s office on the fifth floor to carry out the attack. Chen also prevented Dr Li’s colleagues from coming to his aid.
Surgeons battled for five hours to try to save Dr Li, but to no avail, according to the report.
According to comments on social media, Chen’s daughter had died of blood poisoning and pneumonia at the hospital. A hospital employee said the baby was suffering from common illnesses and that her condition had deteriorated rapidly, reported the South China Morning Post.
The National Health and Family Planning Commission and the Public Security Ministry said Chen should face severe punishment.
The incident is only the latest in a series of violent attacks by patients or their families on medical staff in China. There were 27.3 assaults on doctors per hospital in China in 2012, according to a survey by the Chinese Hospital Association, up from 20.6 in 2008.
According to the Ministry of Health, more than 17,000 violent incidents involving medical staff at hospitals were recorded in 2010, up from 10,000 in 2005.

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s Rio Olympic Games darlings are back in the spotlight.
Badminton silver medallists Chan Peng Soon, Goh Liu Ying and Goh V Shem are making their acting debut in a local Chinese film.
The three have cameo roles in local production company Asia Tropical Films’ latest movie Goodbye Mr Loser.
Mixed doubles pair Chan and Liu Ying were seen shooting some scenes with Mediacorp artiste Ian Fang at the Wangsa Maju Flats here yesterday.
One scene saw the shuttlers playing a young couple having a major disagreement in front of their apartment.
Film director Adrian Teh, 32, said he had wanted to cast the shuttlers even before they became Olympic stars.
“After watching them bring us Olympic glory, I knew that audiences would want to see more of them so I arranged for them to be in this movie together,” said Teh, 32, who confessed to being an avid badminton player himself.
He was full of praise for the shuttlers.
“For first-timers, they are very natural in front of the camera. They even managed to deliver some humorous elements that we asked of them,” he added.
Chan, 28, may be in his first movie but is no stranger to showbiz. He is married to local singer Ester Cham and they have a son and a daughter.
“I’m game for this new experience as long as it does not interfere with our badminton training,” said Chan, who added that he and Liu Ying had trained as usual in the morning.
Liu Ying, 27, said she was glad to land the role.
“It was actually an easy collaboration,” she quipped.
V Shem, who won the doubles silver medal with Tan Wee Kiong, will be acting as the cousin of the main character portrayed by Fang.
Goodbye Mr Loser commenced filming in mid-September and is expected to wrap up by mid-October.
It also stars Hoon Mei Sim, Anjoe Koh, Jack Yap, Lex Pun, Tan Li Yang and Taiwanese celebrity Phoebe Huang. The movie is slated for a Chinese New Year release.

PETALING JAYA – A Malaysian doctor – Dr Fauziah Hasan – is allegedly being detained by Israeli authorities, according to videos uploaded to YouTube by the Women’s Boat To Gaza initiative on Wednesday night.
“I am right now being detained illegally by the Israeli regime. I appeal to all the world leaders, the people of Malaysia and the Government of Malaysia and all peace-loving people throughout the world to exert all action to release us from this illegal detention by the Israeli regime” said Dr Fauziah in the video.
Her video was among several others featuring crewmembers of the boat uploaded on YouTube, which are believed to have been pre-recorded.
This follows an update from the official Women’s Boat to Gaza website on Wednesday which said that contact had been lost with the boat, named the Zaytouna-Oliva.
“At 3.58pm Central European Standard Time (9.58pm Malaysian Time) on 5 October, we lost contact again with the Zaytouna-Oliva and presume that the Israeli Occupation Navy has surrounded it in International Waters (latest recorded position: Lat+31.906033 Lon+33.757630) and has forced it off its course to Gaza,” said Women’s Boat To Gaza on it’s official website.
It added that aside from Dr Fauziah, 12 other women are aboard the boat.
“On board are 13 women, including Mairead Maguire, the 1976 Nobel peace laureate from Northern Ireland, Fauziah Hasan, a doctor from Malaysia, and retired US army colonel Ann Wright,” said Women’s Boat To Gaza.
Dr Fauziah, a MBBS graduate from the University of Tasmania in 1982 is a consultant at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital, Kuala Lumpur.
Prior to Women’s Boat to Gaza, she was the Mercy Malaysia treasurer from 2000 to 2006, and she has participated in missions to Kosovo (1999), Maluku Indonesia (2000), Afghanistan (2001,2002,2003), Aceh (2005), Pakistan (2005) and Gaza (2009).
Dr Fauziah has also been active in Aqsa Syarif, a Malaysian humanitarian NGO in support of the Palestinians, which in 2015 became an agency under the umbrella of Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCare). She was Deputy Chairperson of Aqsa Syarif from 2010 and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of MyCare. Since 2011 she has also been the advisor of Rose2Rose (R2R), another MyCare agency.
She has three children and six grandchildren.
Joshua Pacio may be the youngest member of Baguio City’s famed Team Lakay, but by the end of the week, he could become its one and only MMA world champion.
At 20 years of age, Pacio is a just a youth chasing his MMA dreams in Asia’s largest mixed martial arts promotion. But his outstanding 8-0 unbeaten record and 100 per cent finishing rate earned the Filipino fighter a shot at newly-minted ONE Strawweight World Champion Yoshitaka Naito.
The Japanese MMA veteran is 12 years Pacio’s senior, and owns a more experienced resume based on his hefty work in Japanese promotion Shooto as its Flyweight Champion. This makes Naito a tall order for any opponent, including former ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke, who lost the title to Naito earlier this year.
Pacio is obviously lacking in experience. One year removed from essentially still being a teenager and he gets a call to fight for a world title. One cannot even begin to imagine what it must be like for him, but the young Pacio seems to be taking things in stride.
Pacio may not be the favorite going into the matchup, no doubt, but there is a reason fans cheer for the underdog. Three, in fact.
#1 He’s young and undefeated
Being young and undefeated must be a wonderful feeling. Riding the high of an eight-fight win streak, Pacio has not experienced the pain of defeat. He has gotten close, but in times he appeared to be on the brink of a loss, Pacio was able to dig deep and find a way to win.
Sometimes not knowing how to lose is exactly what a young fighter needs to give the performance of a lifetime, and Pacio is primed for a breakout performance. With an entire nation behind him, cheering from miles away in the Philippines, Pacio has the unwavering support of his people.
Sometimes, this support is enough to push a fighter over the edge, giving him that extra edge he needs in his strikes to come away with victory.
One slight problem with this is his opponent, the champion Naito, is also undefeated at 11 wins, making this fight all the more interesting. Like Pacio, Naito does not know how to lose. He came very close to defeat against former champion Dejdamrong, but like his Filipino challenger, Naito was able to find a way to win.
When two fighters enter the cage, only one comes out victorious. Such is the way of combat sports. As they say when two unbeaten fighters go head-to-head, “Somebody’s 0 has got to go!”
#2 He is a complete fighter
Pacio, like his seniors at Team Lakay, is a world-class wushu expert. His crisp, clean, lightning-quick strikes are truly spectacular, and a very difficult stylistic matchup for any opponent. Surprisingly, however, Pacio is adept at the grappling arts as well, and owns five submissions out of eight total victories.
When Pacio began his career as a teenager, he was first introduced to Muay Thai and wushu by his uncle. Shortly after, he was invited to try out for Baguio City’s premiere fight team. It was there that he met older, more experienced teammates Eduard “Landslide” Folayang and Honorio “The Rock” Banario.
Together, they instilled in Pacio the striking skills that Team Lakay is known for. Under the careful tutelage of coach Mark Sangiao, each and every member of the team is equipped with elite wushu skills that have terrorized opposing fighters.
However, Pacio is unique. Out of all the Team Lakay fighters, Pacio boasts the best finishing rate at 100 per cent, with all of his wins coming either by knockout or by submission. Impressive? Absolutely.
Whether or not the level of competition is up to scratch is a whole different question, but regardless, it is very impressive indeed. One thing is for certain though, Pacio is a complete fighter, and will only get better with more experience and age.
#3 Supreme self-confidence in his abilities
If you ask Pacio who will emerge victorious this Friday night, you will get only one answer. Without batting an eye, Pacio claims he will successfully bring the ONE Strawweight World Championship belt back to the Philippines’ mountain provinces, where he says the title belongs.
That is big talk from a 20-year-old. But it is this kind of self-confidence that gives fighters that will to win, that refusal to bow down and lose. If experience is the only knock on Pacio, his supreme self-confidence serves well to fill that void.
Sometimes, it is this extraordinary belief in oneself that becomes the X-factor in a close fight. Ever wonder how some fighters are able to get that second, third, or fourth wind? They get it when they simply refuse to give into defeat.
Maybe this is exactly what will turn Pacio into the Philippines’ youngest world champion. Maybe it is destiny. Whatever it is, Pacio prefers to have his fate squarely in the palm of his hands.
ONE Championship is pulling out all the stops to close the year on a high note, and the card this Friday is no exception. On 7 October, the promotion returns to the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar, for ONE: STATE OF WARRIORS.
In the main event, ONE Strawweight World Champion Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito makes the first defense of his title against top Filipino challenger Joshua Pacio of the famed Team Lakay in the Philippines.
In the local main event, Myanmar’s favorite son the “Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang appears in the ONE cage for the second time this year in Yangon against former ONE light heavyweight title challenger Michal Pasternak.
Here are some of the fighters to look out for once the action begins.
Yusup Saadulaev
It seems the fighters coming out of Dagestan, Russia, are getting better all the time. After all, this is a country that has produced top prospect Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev, ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat Gafurov, and MMA veteran Yusup “Maestro” Saadulaev.
Since dropping a second-round technical knockout to Koetsu Okazaki two years ago, Saadulaev has strung together three solid victories, including two submission finishes. He is always in great fights, win or lose, which is a testament to his overall ability as a fighter.
He will be taking on Australia’s Jordan “Showtime” Lucas next, a young up-and-coming 22-year-old former champion in another promotion, and it is the perfect time for Saadulaev to once again showcase his world-class wrestling and grappling skills.
Lucas is out for a win though, and will stop at nothing to get it, so Saadulaev will certainly have a lively challenge on his hands.
Muin Gafurov
Before Muin Gafurov lost to Reece “Lightning” McLaren in his last bout, he was considered one of the best fighters at bantamweight and the favorite to land the next shot at Bibiano Fernandes’ ONE Bantamweight World Championship belt. McLaren spoiled that party, and now Gafurov is left on the comeback trail.
If Gafurov is to be believed, however, he is ready to return to the ONE Championship cage, having learned the lessons he needed to make him a better fighter.
He’s going up against skilled striker Kevin Belingon of the Philippines, so a comeback is no easy task. Gafurov will have to weather the storm of Belingon’s fast and powerful wushu striking, which is easier said than done.
Michal Pasternak
Polish middleweight sensation Michal Pasternak moved up in weight to challenge the legendary Roger Gracie for the inaugural ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship last May. Although he fell short of victory, he did get the championship experience he needs to be able to hang with his next opponent — middleweight standout Aung La N Sang.
He is going into hostile territory, entering an arena filled with Aung La’s raucous fans and a crowd that will boo and jeer him to no end, but Pasternak is set on using that energy to his advantage.
It is not going to be easy. Aung La commands the Yangon crowd like no other superstar in ONE Championship, and Pasternak will have to drown out the adversity and focus on the task at hand.
With over half of his victories ending in either knockout or submission, Pasternak is capable of lulling that same crowd into silence with another strong performance. But there is no denying he enters this bout as the slight underdog.
While a victory is not guaranteed by any means, look for Pasternak to give Aung his toughest battle to date.
Yoshitaka Naito
Japanese MMA veteran Yoshitaka Naito is undefeated at 11 wins, with five of his wins coming by submission. The world-class grappler is taking on an opponent 12 years younger than he is in the Philippines’ Joshua Pacio, and is set to prove that his victory over former ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke a few months ago was certainly no fluke.
In that bout, Naito showcased tremendous poise and composure in maintaining control over Dejdamrong for four grueling rounds before finally being able to secure the fight-ending rear naked choke.
Against Pacio, Naito will need to deal with youthful aggression featuring Pacio’s world-class wushu striking ability. More than this however, the young Pacio is also a very capable grappler, which provides an interesting backdrop to this matchup.
Look for Naito to showcase his wide array of MMA skills, taking his younger opponent to school and teaching him a lesson in experience. Naito is the reigning champion, and unless Pacio is able to spoil this party, Naito should be able to hold on to the belt just a little longer before a rematch with Amnuaysirichoke is underway.
Premiums for certificates of entitlement (COEs) ended mostly lower in the latest tender yesterday, a reflection of the weaker economic sentiment.
The exception was the COE for cars up to 1,600cc and 130bhp, whose cost finished at $51,507, up from $50,000 two weeks ago.
COE for cars above 1,600cc or 130bhp fell from $55,501 to close at a five-month low of $53,001.
Open COE, which can be used for any vehicle type but ends up mostly for bigger cars, finished at $54,200, down from $55,201.
Commercial vehicle COE slid from $49,890 to land at $48,702. Motorcycle premium ended at $6,353, down from $6,501.
Ron Lim, general manager of Nissan agent Tan Chong Motors, said: “The surprise was Category A (cars up to 1,600cc).
“Overall, the market wasn’t strong. We really don’t know the reason for the increase.”
He added that reductions in the other premiums – especially that for bigger cars – reflected the weaker economy.
As for the price dip in commercial vehicle COE, he said it was likely a correction as the premium was nearing the psychological ceiling of $50,000.

Your grandmother who swears by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may now have proof that it actually works.
More local firms are working with Temasek Polytechnic to get help producing scientific proof to validate the benefits of such traditional health products.
For instance, this could mean identifying the chemicals that make a herbal brew good for the liver, or checking to see if a popular health supplement really contains antioxidants.
The school showcased its latest work in this field at its annual Applied Science Show held at its campus yesterday.
It gets several projects a month now, said Ong Seng Poon, deputy director of capability development at the School of Applied Sciences, up from one every few months when it started.
In June, Temasek Polytechnic even set up a dedicated centre of innovation to study complementary health products with $3.2 million in funding from government agency Spring Singapore.
Its partners, which include household names such as the Eu Yan Sang TCM group, say having scientific backing for their traditional products open the doors to new markets.
“It’s a way to satisfy the younger consumers because they want to know the science behind the medicines,” said director Koo Chee Kai of Kim Sin Medicine Manufactory.
His firm, which produces traditional medicines and health supplements, has worked with the polytechnic to identify certain chemical compounds in its popular Huji Waist Tonic – a concoction including herbs such as cordyceps.
“When the tests show that these chemicals are present, we can confidently say that it will have some impact on health,” he said.
Mr Koo added: “Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) products are based on TCM theory but now we are moving towards evidence-based medicine and we want to bridge the gap.”
Civil servant Jonathan Lim, 28, said having scientific backing for TCM treatments would make him more confident about consuming them.
“If these products are corroborated by scientific proof, it means that I can have a clearer idea about the effects on my health,” he added.
