Duterte wants Filipinos to shed off 'beggar's mentality'
MANILA – Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella said that actress Agot Isidro with her “beggar’s mentality” was exactly the kind of person President Rodrigo Duterte was targeting in his speech against over-dependence on foreign aid.
“Her position is the kind of mental attitude that the President wants to address, which is when he mentioned that we tend to have a mendicant or a beggar’s mentality,” said Abella in a press conference.
Abella said that Isidro and her ilk were afraid of losing the country’s aid from the United States, which was what the President wanted to shake off.
He said the President wanted all Filipinos to “become independent, mentally, emotionally, internally, and be willing to risk a bit of sacrifice so that we can establish our own independence, in terms of policy and not be dependent on foreign aid.”
He said the public should take the President’s rants against the US as a challenge to be more nationalistic and not depend on other countries.

Japanese singer releases new song after viral PPAP hit
If you thought the recent Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen (PPAP) song was a mere one-hit-wonder, the singer behind the viral track has a follow-up that’s just as bad (or good, depending on your taste) and this time, it’s about sunglasses. Yes, sunglasses.
Japanese comedian and singer-songwriter DJ Kosaka Daimaou, otherwise known as Piko-Taro, released the new track “Neo Sunglasses” on his YouTube page on Thursday (Oct 6).
Wearing the same 70s-inspired yellow flamboyant disco outfit against a plain backdrop – as he did on the PPAP video released last month – the 53-year-old is seen dancing enthusiastically and drops Japanese words like “Kurai” and “Akarui” (“dark” and “bright” in Japanese) about his sunglasses.
The 57-second online clip has since garnered more than 4 million views while PPAP has been viewed on YouTube over 38 million times to date.
Pop singer Justin Beiber tweeted about PPAP last month, calling it his “favourite video on the Internet”. Really now, Beebs?
According to Japanese entertainment news site Owarai Favclip, Daimaou’s dream is to be able to sing at New York’s Madison Square and now that he’s even gotten Beiber’s attention, who knows?
It might turn out to be among the shortest epic concerts in recent history.
And doesn’t he remind you of Singapore actor Chen Tianwen in the “Unbelievable – I so stunned like vegetable” music video? Did one inspire the other? Or is a duet between the two just such a great idea?

Singapore's Manhattan is Asia's best on World's 50 Best Bars list
Singapore cocktail bar Manhattan has been named Asia’s best at the 2016 edition of the World’s 50 Best Bars Awards, announced in London Thursday evening (Oct 6).
It is joined on the list by two other Singapore brands – 28 Hong Kong Street and Operation Dagger.
Manhattan, located in The Regent Hotel Singapore, clinched the 11th spot, climbing 24 spots from last year’s ranking.
But speakeasy 28 Hong Kong Street fell seven spots, to No. 14.
A brand new entry this year is “secret bar” Operation Dagger, at No. 21. It is located in the basement of the junction between Club Street, Ann Siang Hill and Ann Siang Road, and run by the same group behind bar-restaurant Oxwell & Co. and led by Australian Luke Whearty.

Operation Dagger was voted Best New Bar at the Singapore Bar Awards last year and also made the Top 10 for Best New International Cocktail Bar at New Orleans industry event, Tales of the Cocktail in 2015.
At this year’s World’s 50 Best Bars, New York’s The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog, which placed second last year, clinched the top spot, while London’s American Bar and Dandelyan came in second and third place, respectively.
Mr Hamish Smith, World’s 50 Best Bars editor and deputy editor of Drinks International, describes Manhattan bar as “one of the most exciting bar launches in the last few years.”
He tells The Straits Times: “Its ambition to create not only a stylish and beautiful bar interior but also one that takes its drinks seriously is unrivalled around the world – it’s a worthy winner of the Bols Genever Best Bar in Asia.”
He calls 28 Hong Kong Street an “academy favourite… which is not only a great cocktail bar but a champion for the Asian cocktail scene”.
Meanwhile he reveals that new entry Operation Dagger has been on the academy’s radar for a few years. “It’s great to see it enter the list this year as it’s one of Asia’s shining stars of the cocktail scene,” he says.
Bars which placed from 51 to 100 were revealed in August under the organisers’ Bars To Watch 2016 list, with four Singapore bars making the cut: D Bespoke (No, 63), Gibson (No. 65), Nutmeg & Clove (No. 72) and Jigger & Pony (No. 92 ).
Artesian, which was named the “world’s best bar” four times between 2012 and 2015, was completely out of the running for the main list, dropping 53 spots to 54.
Located at The Langham hotel in London, the bar took a hit as the duo behind it – Alex Kretena and Simone Caporale – left last year to pursue other projects. They were with the bar for eight years and their departure triggered an exodus of staff.
The bar’s 54th place listing was accompanied with a note that said: “With a dozen staff leaving after last year’s top-spot finish, Artesian’s fall from grace proves it’s the team, not the four walls, that make for excellence in hospitality.”
The annual list, released by London-based Drinks International magazine, is now in its eighth year. This year, Asian bars have done better than ever before with seven bars in total hailing from Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
The awards are the result of a worldwide industry survey conducted by the magazine, with the final list based on nominations from more than 400 leading figures of the global bar industry.
In March, Drinks International also released the inaugural edition of the Asia’s 50 Best Bars Awards, where 28 HongKong Street was named the best bar in Asia. Eight other bars in Singapore also made it to the list, including Manhattan Bar (No. 5), Operation Dagger (No. 7) and and Jigger & Pony (No. 8).

Xiaomi's new store in Singapore looks to be a huge missed opportunity
The ever-present Chinese tech manufacturer Xiaomi has fallen behind recently with the onslaught of fellow Chinese companies like Oppo and Huawei gaining momentum both in China and internationally.
Even so, they have been releasing a whole host of innovative products to captivate the masses, from drones, laptops, and now even a mirrorless camera.
As part of plans to create a more tangible experience for their customers, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has laid out a plan which will see the company set up some 1,000 retail stores before the end of 2020. This is a stark contrast to their existing business model in which they prioritise online sales.
It looks like one of those stores has arrived, and it is in Singapore.
Suntec City is the place to be
On Friday afternoon, after much teasing on social media, Xiaomi officially unveiled their new flagship store in Singapore.
Located in Suntec City, this marks the first time that Xiaomi has opened a full fledged retail store outside of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

This is a move that may potentially hint of grander plans to open more international stores.
The Singapore store is not 100 per cent run by Xiaomi though, and is a product of a collaborative effort with Singapore’s current go-to tech e-commerce site Lazada, which will manage the sales.
What can you buy there?
In it, you can find the the full range of smartphones available which you can also find from Mi Singapore’s online store. Get a hands-on experience of the flagship Mi 5, Mi Max, right down to the affordable Redmis, before making your purchases on the spot.
Of course, there’s the familiar and hugely popular powerbanks too, with the latest Pro models that incorporate USB C charging also for sale.
Other accessories which you can find here also include the Mi Band 2, if you are looking for an affordable fitness tracker; several models of their earphones, bluetooth speakers, backpacks, and even luggages for your holiday needs.
If you want to watch your weight, they have a weighing scale for sale too.
What you can’t buy there
All the stuff on sale so far are great and all, but what Mi fans internationally are really yearning for are the cool products that is usually reserved for sale in China.
Products such as the Mi Drones, Notebook Air, 4K Mi TVs, even Mi rice cookers were all on display for users to get a feel of, but down below comes a pasted tag which reads in bold “NOT FOR SALE“.

A pity, and a missed opportunity, if you asked me.
Limited units should have been made available, or if not, have a process for pre-orders in small quantities, in order to ‘test the market’.
To be honest, people are already quite bored with Mi phones and powerbanks, and for those who want one – chances are they already own one.
The reality is, there is demand for these products, and Singaporeans have even been importing them in through online channels, or even purchase them during trips to China or Hong Kong.
If Xiaomi truly wants to trump Oppo and Huawei, they must look beyond just stocking their smartphones, and with their inventory of exciting products they certainly have the means to do so.
