13 dead in Vietnam karaoke fire
Hanoi – A fire at a karaoke bar killed 13 people and injured two police officers in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, an official said Wednesday.
The blaze started Tuesday afternoon in the busy Cau Giay district and quickly spread to neighbouring houses, according to local official The Chung.
Photos showed plumes of smoke rising from the large fire as firefighters on ladders tackled the flames, with cars and motorbikes outside the building also burning.
“Hundreds of firemen and police officers were mobilised to extinguish the fire,” Chung told AFP.
He added that two police officers were being treated after they were injured trying to put out the blaze.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has ordered police to immediately “investigate and conclude reasons for the fire, seriously punishing wrongdoing”, according to the government’s official website.
He also asked local authorities to closely inspect karaoke bars and restaurants for fire safety protocols and equipment, the statement added.
Blazes are common at houses, bars and restaurants in communist Vietnam where fire prevention and firefighting is limited.
In September, a seven-storey karaoke bar in Hanoi went up in flames at night, but no casualties were reported.

Tired after 30-minute wait for wonton mee, man smashes stall with beer bottle and punches woman
SINGAPORE – After deciding he had enough of waiting 30 minutes for his wonton mee, a man started smashing the stall front with a beer bottle.
The incident happened at North Bridge Road Food Centre on Monday (Oct 31) at about 10.30pm.
A woman selling soya beancurd at a nearby stall tried to prevent the man from escaping, but received a beating instead.
The owner of the wanton mee stall, Ms Ye, 65, told Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News that she had opened the stall as usual last night when the man came to order a takeaway meal. He grew impatient after waiting for about 30 minutes and walked towards the stall in a huff.
He reportedly shouted at Ms Ye: “Do you want to give me my wonton mee? If not I will show you! (sic)”
As Ms Ye replied that there were still two customers ahead of him, the man took a beer bottle and smashed the glass display at the front of the stall, causing it to shatter.
Ms Ye told Shin Min: “As I could smell alcohol on him, I immediately called the police. When he tried to leave later, I followed him and tried to prevent him from escaping.”
The soya bean stallholder noticed that something was amiss and followed them. When the man struck an aggressive pose, she tried to mediate but became the target of his wrath.
The man was believed to have punched the soya bean seller on the face and hit her again after she fell to the ground.
Shin Min reported that the woman felt giddy and her face was swollen after the attack.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that they were alerted to a case of ambulance assistance at 11.04pm and sent an ambulance to the location. A person was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The police said that they were alerted to a case of rash act at the area at 10.42pm on Oct 31. A 54-year-old man was arrested in relation to the case and investigations are ongoing.
It is understood the man was arrested near the location of the incident.
Shin Min reported that the victim of the attack was discharged from hospital on Tuesday (Nov 1) morning. She had been in the emergency department through the night, and while her face remained slightly swollen, she was alright, her daughter told Shin Min.

Rocker Bono named Glamour magazine's first 'Man of the Year'
NEW YORK – Irish rock star Bono is getting a new accolade: Glamour magazine’s first Man of the Year.
The US women’s magazine announced on Tuesday that the U2 frontman and humanitarian will be the first man in its 36-year history to be honoured along side its annual Women of the Year list.
The magazine said on its website that for years it has eschewed including men in the honours because “the tribe we’re into celebrating is female.”
However, “when a major male rock star who could do anything at all with his life decides to focus on the rights of women and girls worldwide – well, all that’s worth celebrating. We’re proud to name that rock star, Bono, our first Man of the Year,” it said.
Bono, 56, in 2015 created the Poverty Is Sexist campaign that is aimed at helping the world’s poorest women through better access to education, health services and business opportunities.
The campaign is part of the ONE organisation he helped found in 2004 to fight poverty and disease in Africa.
Bono thanked Glamour for the award, saying in a statement that the “battle for gender equality can’t be won unless men lead it along with women. We’re largely responsible for the problem, so we have to be involved in the solutions.”
“We can do much more than we think we can. Leaders are accountable to all of us. If they don’t support women and girls, vote them out of office,” he added.
Glamour’s Women of the Year are US singer Gwen Stefani, American Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, the three founders of Black Lives Matter, International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde, American pop star Zendaya, Italian designer Miuccia Prada, Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad and plus-size model Ashley Graham.
They will be celebrated at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Nov. 14.

Looking for a man earning $79,000?
Marriage lies far in the future for many children, but one non-profit organisation in Japan has launched an initiative to have youngsters think about the prospect by watching mock weddings.
Other organisations are also trying to make young people consider tying the knot eventually.
Tokyo-based Houkago NPO Afterschool has partnered with Take and Give Needs, a major wedding planning company, to hold such events for elementary and junior high school students.
They are invited to a wedding hall, where a wedding planner talks about the meaning of marriage and stages a mock wedding ceremony.
At an event in August, the children watched as a man and woman acting as the bride and groom pledged their love for each other, just like in a real ceremony.
“It made me want to get married more some day,” an 11-year-old elementary school boy said.
“Opportunities exist to learn about jobs through career education and the like, but there are few opportunities to learn about marriage,” said Kuniyasu Hiraiwa, representative director of the NPO.
“I hope the children can form an overall image of their future life, whether or not they get married,” he added.
However, the obstacles to marriage run deeper.
In a 2014 Cabinet Office survey, Japanese people in their 20s and 30s cited “I haven’t met the right person” and “I don’t earn enough to get married” as top reasons for remaining single.
Another survey by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research showed that the main reason those aged 18 to 24 stayed single was “I’m still too young”.
To tackle these mindsets, initiatives are under way to provide high school students with information on marriage.
A recent event is Work, Marriage, Childbirth: Life Design Seminar for Students, a seminar by Yamagata Prefecture’s childcare support section.
At the event, Yasuko Takeda, an executive at a company managing marriage ceremony halls, gives lectures that involve using data to depict the reality of marriage.
“If you’re looking for a man who earns six million yen (S$79,000) or more a year, only one in 20 fit that description,” she told the students during a session.
Kanako Amano, a research fellow at NLI Research Institute, said: “Some strongly feel that young people should not… leave things to chance.”
“It’s important to create a life plan based on conventional knowledge from an early age. This may make children more aware of what marriage entails,” the research fellow added.
