Johnny Depp enters Rowling's magical world in 'Fantastic Beasts' sequel

0

LOS ANGELES – Johnny Depp has swashbuckled as a pirate, played a mad hatmaker and will next step into”Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world of magic in the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” sequel, film trade publications said Tuesday.

Depp, 53, one of Hollywood’s top actors and box office draws, will co-star in the 2018 sequel to “Fantastic Beasts,”due out in theatres on Nov 18, Deadline.com, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety said, citing unnamed sources.

The reports also said Depp will make a cameo in the first film, but did not reveal what part he will play.

Time Warner Inc-owned Warner Bros studios did not formally announce Depp’s casting, and a representative for the studio did not immediately return requests for comment.

Little is known about the plot of “Fantastic Beasts,” which stars Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne with a screenplay by Rowling, featuring new characters, story and set in New York in 1926, long preceding the “Harry Potter” books and films, which were set in England in the 1990s.

Rowling revealed earlier this month that “Fantastic Beasts”will be the first of five new movies set in her wizarding world.

The new franchise will trace the rise of a powerful wizard named Gellert Grindelwald and his eventual 1945 duel with Albus Dumbledore, the popular wizard headmaster from the Potter stories.

Rowling’s seven-book “Harry Potter” series sold more than 450 million copies worldwide, and the film franchise, which ended in 2011 with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” took in more than US$7 billion (S$9.7 billion) at the global box office.

Depp leads Disney’s hit franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean,” in which he plays Captain Jack Sparrow, and “Alice in Wonderland,” in which he plays the Mad Hatter. He is known for often playing eccentric, unpredictable and off-kilter characters.

Singaporeans find ways to make trip across to Malaysia worthwhile

0

GELANG PATAH – Many Singaporeans say they will make adjustments to their trips into Malaysia following the implementation of the RM20 road charge (RC).

The ruling from yesterday affected all private foreign-registered vehicles at the Johor Causeway and Second Link.

An advertisement producer who only wanted to be known as Yee, 41, said Singaporeans who wanted to enjoy the benefit of the lower currency exchange in Malaysia should not mind paying the RM20.

Retiree Joseph Chong, 62, who usually visits Johor three times a week for shopping and meals, felt the charge was unnecessary.

“My friends have business dealings here. We spend a lot at the outlets in Johor Baru each week. We feel the S$6.60 charge is unnecessary,” the Singaporean said at the Second Link yesterday.

Chong added that they normally visited Malaysia in two or three cars but will carpool from now on.

Engineer R. Senthilkumar, 42, who visits Johor Baru weekly to eat his favourite food and shop for groceries, said he would buy more at one go to make fewer trips.

The RC will be collected via Touch ‘n Go card each time a motorist enters Malaysia at the Causeway and Second Link. The initial exercise does not include motorcycles.

Traffic at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex was smooth, though there was some confusion among Singaporeans who had to pay the RC and toll fare as both the reader machines were located near each other.

Sales executive Lukas Teo, 34, said he tapped his Touch ‘n Go on the RC machine and waited for the barrier to open.

“When it did not open, a Customs staff member came to tell me that I also had to pay the toll,” he said.

Johor Road Transport Department director Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said: “The traffic and system proceeded without any hiccups and we have staff on standby for the first few days to provide help.”

An average of 20,000 foreign vehicles enter Malaysia through Johor daily via the Causeway and Second Link.

South Korea presidential office names new prime minister, finance minister

0

SEOUL – South Korea’s presidential office on Wednesday named a new prime minister and finance minister in the wake of a scandal involving President Park Geun-hye and a friend who allegedly meddled with state affairs.

The Blue House said it named Yim Jong-yong, the Financial Services Commission chairman, as the new finance minister and deputy prime minister.

It also named Kim Byong-joon as the new prime minister. Kim was a former senior presidential secretary during former President Roh Moo-hyun’s administration.

Stars hit red carpet for Hanoi film fest

0

HANOI – Vietnam’s glitterati donned their finest on the red carpet Tuesday (Nov 1) for the opening of the Hanoi International Film Festival, aimed at boosting the communist nation’s little-known movie industry.

Welcomed by cheering fans, Vietnam’s A-listers were joined by filmmakers and actors from around the globe including from Russia, India and as far afield as Ghana, all in town for the fourth edition of the festival that runs until Saturday (Nov 5).

Some are hoping the event will breathe life into Vietnam’s movie industry – still in its infancy and mostly unknown, even on home soil.

“An event like this, what it does is it bring Vietnamese films into the forefront of international recognition,” producer Timothy Linh Bui told AFP at the festival, where his romance-horror film The Housemaid is screening.

“There’s a large talent pool of actors and filmmakers so it’s a very exciting time to see what takes shape and where it can grow from here.”

This year’s festival features 146 films from more than 40 countries, including a re-release of Indochine, filmed in Vietnam and starring French cinema queen Catherine Deneuve, who is in town for the event.

But some worry the five-day festival won’t be enough to lure in young audiences in Vietnam, most of whom would rather see the latest Hollywood action blockbuster or Korean romance flick than a Vietnamese arthouse movie.

“Hoping that the film festival will have some sort of momentum to boost the nation’s cinematography is a bit overblown” said Nguyen Thi Hong Ngat, deputy head of Vietnam’s Cinematography Association.

Such momentum has been lacking in recent years: Though the number of film studios boomed from 63 in 2009 to nearly 400 last year, the number of Vietnamese movies produced has barely notched up, with many studios producing commercial work instead of feature films.

The festival will also host a roundtable with bigwigs from Indian cinema, home to the wildly successful Bollywood industry – a chance for Vietnam’s novice industry to learn from business veterans.

But the secret to success is not simply copying a formula, but rather encouraging Vietnam’s filmmakers to find their own voices, said Indian director Adoor Gopalakrishnan.

“In a country like Vietnam, they should not follow Bollywood or Hollywood, that should not be the model,” he told AFP.
