Beauty And The Beast trailer is finally released

0

The live-action movie Beauty And The Beast, set for release on March 17, 2017, premiered its first full-length trailer on Nov 14.

Starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey fame, in case you were wondering) as the “odd” Disney couple, Beauty And The Beast is just one of the many upcoming live-action films adapted from Disney’s large catalogue of animated feature hits.

Beauty And The Beast is directed by Bill Condon, who directed Chicago.

The trailer pretty much gives us a summary of the classic tale. It starts with the imprisonment of Belle’s father Maurice and goes on to introduce viewers to the Beast and his magical staff at the castle, to the eventual romance between Belle and Beast.

It also features iconic music from the original cartoon, released in 1991.

Luke Evans, star of The Girl On The Train, plays the narcissistic villain Gaston, who eats five dozen eggs and is roughly the size of a barge.

The movie also features Kevin Kline as Maurice (Belle’s dad) and Josh Gad as LeFou, while Ian McKellen, Ewan McGregor and Emma Thompson play the voices of Cogsworth, Lumiere and Mrs Potts, respectively.

Football: Messi leads press boycott over Lavezzi marijuana claim

0

SAN JUAN, ARGENTINA – Lionel Messi announced a press boycott here Tuesday to protest against a journalist who alleged team-mate Ezequiel Lavezzi had used marijuana at Argentina’s training base.

Standing in front of the entire Argentina squad at a post-match news conference following his team’s 3-0 win over Colombia, Messi said the players would no longer speak to press following the controversy.

“We have made the decision not to talk to the press anymore, obviously you know why,” the Argentina captain said.

“There were a lot of accusations, a lot of disrespect, and the accusations they made against ‘Pocho’ (Lavezzi) are very serious,” the Barcelona superstar said.

Lavezzi, who plays for Chinese side Hebei Fortune, was accused by an Argentine radio journalist on Twitter of smoking marijuana in the team’s training camp.

Lavezzi, who has denied the claim, played no part in last Thursday’s 3-0 loss to Brazil and was left off the substitutes bench for Tuesday’s match against Colombia.

HK tycoon announces break-up with ex, says he's given her S$363 million

0

HONG KONG – Billionaire Joseph Lau, 65, placed front-page advertisements in Hong Kong on Tuesday (Nov 15) to announce that he broke up with his partner Yvonne Lui, 37, in 2014, but remains responsible for their two children’s living, education and other expenses.

“Before the break-up, I took care of her daily life and gave her a lot of cash, jewellery and other gifts, worth more than HK$2 billion (S$363 million). She is now a super rich woman who can lead a wealthy life without my financial support,” the statement read.

The statement was a response to speculation about the status of their relationship, after reports said she visited him in hospital, said Apple Daily.

Mr Lau, who is suffering from kidney failure, heart disease and diabetes, is being taken care of by his girlfriend, former entertainment reporter Chan Hoi Wan, 37.

He has six children with three women, including Ms Chan and his late former wife Theresa Po.

National Kidney Foundation sacks CEO Edmund Kwok

0

SINGAPORE: The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) on Wednesday (Nov 16) said it had terminated the employment of CEO Edmund Kwok with effect from Nov 14.

In its press release, NKF said a three-member executive committee (exco) appointed by the board will assume all duties and responsibilities of the CEO until mid-December when the former CEO, Mrs Eunice Tay, will return to take over responsibilities of the CEO from this exco while the search for a new CEO goes on.

“The Board of NKF would like to assure all stakeholders, including patients, donors,
supporters and employees, that Mr Kwok’s personal indiscretion has nothing to do with the
stewardship of our finances. Our operations are not affected by this matter and our services
to patients and beneficiaries continue as per normal,” it added.

Mr Kwok had joined NKF in 2012, and was serving as the Chief Operating Officer under then-CEO Mrs Tay before assuming the reins in November 2013. The latter had taken the mantle in 2006 from then-interim CEO Goh Chee Leok in the aftermath of the leadership reshuffle resulting from the entire NKF board resigning in 2005.

He was previously the vice president of oncology at Parkway Healthcare and also had stints at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the Institute of Mental Health.

Mr Edmund Kwok’s name was missing from NKF’s organisation chart, which indicated it was effective Nov 14 this year.

The latest development casts another shadow on the VWO’s chequered past. In 2004, it was embroiled in a financial scandal involving another CEO, Mr T. T. Durai, who was eventually found to have abused his authority by privileging himself and those he chose to favour. For instance, he admitted to having used the VWO’s funds to maintain his personal car, travel frequently on first-class flights and finance a fleet of eight chauffeured cars used for both official and private purposes.

Both civil and criminal lawsuits were filed against the former CEO, who repaid S$4.05 million he owed the charity and also served two-thirds of the three-month jail sentence given to him for deceiving NKF into paying S$20,000 to his interior design friend David Tan. He started his jail term in June 2008 after he lost his appeal to the High Court against his conviction and sentencing the year before.

As a result of this incident, a new board of directors and leadership, led by Mr Gerard Ee as chairman, were appointed to rebuild NKF’s reputation. They restructured the way the VWO was run to improve fiscal prudence, accountability and transparency, as well as its core services to patients.

In an interview with 938LIVE’s On The Record last December, Mr Ee shared that the main challenge he faced after taking over NKF in 2005 was that the organisation had lost the support and trust of the general public. “We needed to have that basic trust, and then deal with the issues,” he said then.

When contacted after NKF’s announcement, Mr Ee said he was “surprised” at the news and that “he had no idea on the background” of the termination, adding that he could not comment without knowing more.

Brandon Vera Vows Never to Quit Against Hideki Sekine

0

A year after claiming the inaugural ONE Heavyweight World Championship, Brandon “The Truth” Vera finally has his first title defense scheduled, and it is a clash of titans.

The champion will defend the belt against undefeated challenger Hideki “Shrek” Sekine at ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION, which broadcasts live on Friday Night, 2 December, from the Mall Of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.

“This is my first title defense, and I am fighting one of Japan’s living legends,” the 39-year-old Filipino-American says. “Everybody calls him ‘Shrek’. Not just because he looks like ‘Shrek’, but because he is built like ‘Shrek’. He is a giant ogre.”

Armed with a judo black belt, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, and evident knockout power, Sekine is a physical specimen who owns a spotless 7-0 record, with three victories coming by TKO and another three by submission. The Bonsai Jiu-Jitsu rep has obliterated DEEP’s megaton division over the course of his career.

“I would say his weakness is going to be his size,” says Vera of his opponent. “He is a huge dude. If we go past the first and second round, I am going to expect his mouth to be open and his heart to be beating through his eyes.

“Through my experience, I am looking for those little key factors that most guys do not even know that they are doing.

“I am looking forward to all the little things he is going to mess up on and I hope to pressure him into making a mistake.”

image

Perhaps Vera’s biggest strength is his experience. After all, he has been going 14 years strong in the MMA game, and only plans to get stronger.

A former collegiate wrestler at Virginia’s Old Dominion University, and later a member of the United States Air Force’s Greco-Roman team, Vera began shaping his MMA game under the careful eye of fourth-degree BJJ black belt, Lloyd Irvin, in the early 2000s.

In 2002, “The Truth” made his professional debut as a heavyweight and went on a massive hot streak. He won eight straight contests before dropping a decision to Tim Sylvia in 2007. Vera bounced between the heavyweight and light heavyweight classes in the years to follow, and had a mixed bag of victories and losses.

Mentally recovering from a defeat, let alone multiple defeats, was a challenge within itself.

“Any loss is a huge valley,” he admits. “In our minds, we are the unbeatable force. We are the class five typhoon. Nobody is supposed to be able to stop us.

“When you do run into a loss or run into a wall, something that takes the wind out of your sails, it is a big thing to have to pick yourself back up and make it happen again. It is hard. Really hard.”

image

However, the Filipino-American recreated himself in 2014. He signed with ONE Championship, started preparing to relocate to the Philippines, and made his promotional debut as a powerful heavyweight later that December against Igor Subora at ONE: WARRIOR’S WAY in Pasay City.

“I was super nervous,” he recalls. “Nervous was not even cutting it. It felt like if I did not win this fight, I was going to die. It was life and death. Even the walkout was life and death.

“It was not just the fight I was fighting. I was fighting everything else. I was fighting personal issues at home, dealing with injuries I did not let anyone know about.

“The whole fight was an uphill battle. It felt like I had to climb Mount Everest, get to Igor, fight him, and make a statement, all at the same time.”

A statement he made indeed. He immediately rocked Subora with a switch kick and clinched him against the cage. Though his opponent recovered, “The Truth” dodged most of Subora’s strikes and cleverly picked his spots, dropped him with a straight punch and TKO victory in the first round.

For his encore, he was matched up against Paul “The Typhoon” Cheng a year later at ONE: SPIRIT OF CHAMPIONS for the inaugural ONE Heavyweight World Championship. At the time, the Taiwanese fighter was riding an impressive four-fight win streak, including back-to-back TKOs.

image

“The Truth,” however, proved to be far more impressive. Vera dodged Cheng’s right cross and dropped him with a left hook. When he stood back up, the Filipino-American blasted him with a head kick and threw two hammer fists, causing the ref to call the fight. It lasted only 26 seconds. Vera, finally, was a world champion.

“When I won the belt, the first feeling I had was a giant sigh of relief. It felt like this huge weight had been lifted off of me,” he says. “That for sure was one of the highest peaks I have ever had [in my career].

“I do not even know if the word ‘amazing’ even covers the feeling I had. There are no words I could put together to express how I felt.”

Though it has taken a full year before getting another fight, Vera, who owns a 14-7 record, is proving that December is his lucky month.  In preparation for his title defense against Sekine, he is working at Alliance Training Center in California, and even spent some with Manny Pacquio’s coaches in the Philippines.

image

Being the champ is important to Vera. In fact, it is what defines him now, and he will do whatever it takes to retain the belt.

“A champion never ever quits. Ever. A champion is somebody who gets caught in an armbar and will let that thing break, pull it out, and hit the opponent in the face with it,” he says.

“A champion is somebody who is willing to make sacrifices mentally, physically, or emotionally to the tee just for that goal that they have in mind.

“I am the guy who will let the arm break and hit somebody in the face with it so I can win the fight.”

New dengue cases below 100 for 3rd week in a row

0

The number of new dengue cases remained below 100 for the third straight week last week, with 86 cases of the mosquito-borne virus reported.

This was one more than in the previous week, according to the latest figures from the National Environment Agency’s (NEA’s) dengue website.

Dengue cases have remained below 100 since the week starting Oct 23.

As of Monday, a total of 12,625 dengue cases have been reported since the start of the year – more than the 11,286 in the whole of 2015.

While NEA initially warned in February that cases this year could hit a historic high of over 30,000 cases, this now appears unlikely as the weekly figure has fallen markedly over the last two months.

Dengue clusters across the island have been on the decline.

As of Monday, 10 clusters remain – down from 12 the previous week – with one classified as high risk.

The cluster at Yishun Avenue 4 and Yishun Street 61 remains the highest risk with a total of 83 cases, including one in the past fortnight.

There have been nine dengue deaths this year – compared with four in 2015. The latest victim was an 81-year-old man from Mandai Estate who died on Nov 7. Mandai Estate is not an active dengue cluster.

Last month, NEA released male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying the Wolbachia bacteria at Braddell Heights housing estate, as part of a small-scale trial to control the spread of dengue.

The trial will be extended to two other estates in Nee Soon East and Tampines West this month.

Record 3.7m visitors at museums, heritage places last year

0

The number of visitors at national museums and heritage institutions hit an all-time high of 3,751,475 in 2015, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) said yesterday.

This was almost one million more than the 2,970,981 visitors in 2014, spurred in part by the opening of the National Gallery Singapore and the Indian Heritage Centre.

There was also a rise in visitorship at most institutions.

The number of visitors to the Malay Heritage Centre more than doubled, from 166,506 in 2014 to 445,186 in 2015. That for the Singapore Art Museum also shot up from 743,718 to 903,357.

Heritage culture got a tremendous boost during the SG50 year. Non-ticketed attendance at heritage events rose from 5.2 million in 2014 to 6.2 million in 2015.

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu said in a statement: “The SG50 Concert Series in the Park, Jubilee Walk, opening of National Gallery Singapore and many more events drew large crowds.”

Attendance at ticketed and non-ticketed performing arts events remained largely stable, with 1.6 million tickets sold and 2.8 million attendees at non-ticketed arts events.

There was, however, an increase in the number of ticketed and non-ticketed performing and visual arts events.

MCCY said, on average, there were 23 arts performances and 72 visual arts exhibitions daily in 2015.

The ministry also highlighted an increase in individual and corporate donations to the arts and culture sector, from $60 million in 2014 to more than $150 million in 2015.

Another $80 million was matched in funds by the Government.
