Reversing ageing: Are we smothering seniors into helplessness?

0

SINGAPORE – At the age of 76, former chef host Asmah Laili rarely went out without a wheelchair or walker, and relied on a helper to run her sales cooking classes.

When she challenged herself to prepare a bubur somsom dessert without the help of a maid, it was only five minutes that she was panting: “I can not carry this too.” I was exhausted.

But then, with the task of feeling to grab her, almost miraculous things happen.

She forgot her crutches.

After entering a taxi and offering her dessert to her former colleague, she confesses to her two feet, she confesses: “It brought sweet memories of the past.I have done so many things today, and I never Did not think I can do all their own.

With the aging of the population, Singapore is expanding medical facilities and infrastructure for the elderly. But does it miss the same key thing in aging games?

WATCH: The transformation of a 76-year-old

A new four-part documentary series premiered on Boxing Day (December 26), turning back the clock through a series of social experiments that examine how our attitudes, expectations and circumstances affect older people.

For example: What happens to the mental health of a group of female nursing home residents, when they are controlled to design their public living space for two weeks, from choosing wall paints to potted plants?

And it is better to raise the brainpower of volunteers in the 50s and 60s – do Sudoku puzzles, salsa dances, or pedal bikes. (The answer may be many.)

WATCH: A social experiment on brain-boosting

“Return to the clock” is the core of its executive producer Sharon Hun the question: “Help the elderly, we help them helpless?

The core of this series is a time travel experiment – five participants aged 74 to 78 go back to 1977, living in a colonial bungalow for a week in everything retro.

Despite their health and mobility problems, the five men were forced to raise themselves, without any help, apart from each other; and were involved in pushing them beyond pre-imagined limits to physical and other activities.

The idea is to see if you can take them back to their glorious days and get rid of the level of helplessness they expect, to turn around the devastation of old age in a week.

‘IT TAKES TOUGH LOVE TO LIVE BETTER, STRONGER LIVES’

For example, artist Harry Chin, 75 years old, had a mild stroke three years ago and only went out to paint when his assistant was with him. For his challenge, he walked more than an hour to the botanical garden, carrying his own equipment.

He later said: “I think my old self back, I am full of vitality.

Other contestants include soccer referee legend Chandra Nadasan, 76, who made the first match in 28 years to make the referee an appropriate match; Singapore’s first female army captain Nancy Tan, 74, returned to Basra And Tamil Theater actress Chris Navani Narayanan, 78, who danced for the first time in seven years.

Psychologists, and fitness instructors. All participants were also tested for memory, emotional well-being, strength, balance, and flexibility before and after a week of experimentation. The final result is shown in the fourth set.

But producer Tang Hui-hwan admits that she and her co-producers Lin Lin and Julie Lisa find it difficult to shake off the idea of a fragile old man even if they push five participants.

When a participant falls in a critical scene, they question what they are doing.

Fortunately, the participants rebounded quickly. “We have to believe that they are stronger than we think, and sometimes need this strong love to help them lead a better and stronger life,” Ms. Tang said.

REASON TO LIVE ON

So did the one-week retreat made any lasting impact on the participants’ lives? Or did they revert to their old ways afterwards?

When Channel NewsAsia caught up with a couple of participants roughly two months after the experiment, at a preview screening of the series on  Nov 26, some of the changes were clear.

Mr Chandra said he has adopted a more rigorous exercise routine. Aside from swimming twice a week, he climbs 25 flights of stairs on Mondays and Wednesdays. He credits James Tang, the documentary’s fitness consultant.

“When James said that it’ll sort of enhance my memory, I said, why should I let my memory get less and less? I’ve more to gain and nothing to lose,” he said.

As for Mr Chin, a widower, instead of spending his days in solitude with his artwork as he used to, he said: “Getting to know my four friends and making happy memories with them has changed the way I think.”

Explaining that loneliness is an issue commonly faced by the elderly, the documentary’s geriatrician Dr Carol Tan said: “Before that, (Harry) had said, ‘there’s no reason for me to live on.’ But because of his friends, he now has a reason to live on.”

At the preview screening, guest of honour Mr Chee Hong Tat, Minister of State for Health and for Communications and Information, expressed his hope that Singaporeans would face ageing with optimism.

“It is really about mind over matter,” he said. “Yes, infrastructure needs to be there, but that’s really more like a hygiene factor. It’s necessary, but insufficient. What is actually more important is the right attitude, and care and concern coming from within.”

Turn Back The Clock premieres with a one-hour episode on Monday, Dec 26, at 8pm (SG/HK), as part of the CNA Signatures belt showcasing innovative programmes.

Share More The Secret to a Healthy Body

0

health-hacksThe secret of a healthy body is simple, actually not too difficult, but all the same, it takes daily discipline. In addition, it does not cost you a lot of money. There are five key areas that will keep your body in shape, healthy, flexible and powerful. This article will outline the five areas of work to be undertaken and will include a sample of your weekly workouts that you can start today.

1. Aerobic Exercise. The easiest way to meet this need is to walk. Walking is one of the best sports of your body. Your joints wear less than jog. Make sure to slow down to start warm-up and slowly increase the speed after about 3-5 minutes. To increase the intensity, just lengthen your pace a bit and speed up your pace. Another strategy to increase the intensity is to increase your speed for short bursts of time. (See exercise below) If you like, jogging is also okay if it does not bother your knees. Just know, go well if you go fast enough. No big investment needs. All you need is your sneakers, maybe not even if you walk on the beach. 30 minutes a day proved to be the best exercise every day. If you do not have all the time at once, even if you divide it into 3 X 10 minutes or 2 X 15 minutes, the same benefits will be produced.

2. Stretching. An important age marker is your level of agility. Yoga is a terrific way to keep your body flexible. If you do not have time to do a complete yoga class, try to make sure you do aerobic exercise stretching after 5 minutes a day. To secure most areas of your body, try the sun salute, some seat twist and hips to open.

3. Balancing. Balance, flexibility, is what we lose with age. Practice a little bit every day and you’re less likely to lose it. Yoga, again, is another great way to build and maintain a balance. There are several yoga positions that you can use to increase the balance. Try it once a day. One simple thing you can do is stand on one leg and grab the leg of the other leg to stretch the hamstring in front of the thigh. As you build your balance over time, try touching your toes with your other hand while maintaining balance. It helps keep your eyes focused on a little. 15-60 seconds on each leg.

4. Strength Building. You can of course attend the gym and weightlifting. But another cheaper option is just as good, just use the weight of your own body to resist. The easiest way is to do yoga a few hours a week. Yoga classes are great, but in order to save money, I suggest buying several different yoga tapes and rotating them. From your local library first check the tape and see if you like them before buying, or go to Amazon and check out the reviews to find the high rating. If you do not want to do yoga, you can do Pilates, or try Dr. Roizen and Dr.Oz prescribed “you: User Manual” free online exercise program.

5. Deep Breathing. This is very important, here is why. Your lymphatic system relies on muscle and respiratory contractions to move fluids around the body’s lymphatic system. Why is it so important? Lymphatic system & quot; has three interrelated functions: (1) removal of excess fluid from body tissues, (2) absorption of fatty acids, subsequent transport of fat as cholesterol to the circulatory system, and (3) production of immune cells. How do you get your daily dose? Aerobics, yoga and / or try a deep breathing exercise 2-3 times a day. Here’s how:

When you exhale, your lungs are completely emptied by pulling your stomach.
Take a deep breath.
Maintain twice the time required for breathing.
Breath four times as long as it breathes.
Do this 10 times.
Enjoy rejuvenation!

Israel summons 14 ambassadors after UN settlement vote

0

Civilian coordination with Palestinians also cut in retaliation to UN resolution, Defence Minister Lieberman announces.

Israel is calling on ambassadors of UN Security Council members to vote in favor of condemning settlements, a foreign ministry spokesman said.

Israeli Defense Minister Abdul Aziz al-Libguim announced Sunday that Israel was cutting civilian coordination with the Palestinians.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ehren Nahsen said the envoy of the 14 members of the UN Security Council will visit Jerusalem on a full-day mission. The United States envoy was not summoned.
The Palestinians responded to the United Nations settlement vote
The Security Council passed a resolution on Friday after the United States abstained and adopted the first resolution since 1979, condemning the Israeli settlement policy.

Which called for “the immediate and complete cessation of all Israeli settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem”.

It stated that the settlements had “no legal effect” and that “dangerously jeopardizes the viability of the two-State solution”.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the resolution as “a shameful blow to Israel,” Sunday repeating the Israeli claims that US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry are behind the resolution.

“We have no doubt that the Obama administration launched it, standing behind, coordinating the draft and asking for adoption,” Netanyahu said at the beginning of the weekly cabinet meeting.

“This is, of course, totally contrary to traditional US policy, that is, without trying to impose conditions on the final resolution, of course, President Obama himself in 2011, a clear commitment to avoid taking such measures.

Although the resolution had no sanctions, Israeli officials feared that it might expand the possibility of prosecution before the International Criminal Court.

They also fear that it may encourage some States to impose sanctions on Israeli settlers and goods produced in the settlements.

Earlier Sunday, the Army Radio reported that Lieberman ordered the Israeli security services to cease all cooperation with the Palestinians in matters of civilians while maintaining security coordination.

Israeli officials declined to comment on the report.

Opinion: Obama, John Kerry and the Palestinian legend

Sunday Measures taken to join Netanyahu’s mandate to review the work of the United Nations, including funding for United Nations agencies and the presence of their representatives in Israel.

Right-wing Minister of Public Security Erdan said Saturday night that Israel should “announce a full annexation of settlements” in response to the resolution.

Naftali Bennett, the education minister of the far right Jewish family, told the Army Radio that his party would “soon come up with an annex to the Maale Adumim bill,” a settlement city east of Jerusalem.

Hong Kong Will No Longer Provide Visa-On-Arrival For Indians, Know About It And The New Guidelines

Hong Kong Will No Longer Provide Visa-On-Arrival For Indians, Know About It And The New Guidelines

Source: timesofindia | Representative image: vietnam-legal | maamatimanush
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the Chinese Special Administrative Region (SAR) has caused major setbacks to Indian travelers, declaring that they will no longer provide entry visas to Indians. From January 23 next year, Indian nationals will need to register before they can enter Hong Kong.

“The pre-entry online registration service for Indian nationals is now open,” the Immigration Department said in a statement posted on its official website. “The notice also reads” Indian citizens must visit or transit Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) (If entering the HKSAR during transit), registration must be made on-line and successfully completed prior to arrival.

This step is seen as a great setback to improve trade relations and foreign diplomacy.

The new guidelines

Starting next month, Indians traveling to Hong Kong must register online and complete all pre-immigration procedures in advance of their visit. Passport requirements are for any Indian national with a passport valid for at least six months.

Applicants who have cleared the pre-enrollment process will receive a six-month pass. This is a multiple entry visa, with a maximum duration of 14 days for each visit.

Approval and registration are valid for six months or until the Indian passport associated with the registration expires. Whichever comes first.

However, holders of valid diplomatic or official passports, as well as those who frequently access electronic services, are exempt from pre-registration online.

Travel directly by plane, do not intend to leave the airport passengers do not need to arrive before the registration.

Visitors who plan to visit Hong Kong for more than 14 days or who travel outside employment (eg employment, education or residence) must apply for a visa from the Immigration Department.

Existing Rule

Indians unconditionally, visa-free access to Hong Kong for 14 days.

Why a sudden change in visa policy?

According to Indian officials, Hong Kong wants to curb the number of asylum seekers from India, which is one of the largest contributors to the local economy.

The Assistant Director of Immigration, Mr Ma Chi-ming, urged visitors from India to refrain from entering false information in order to increase their access to Hong Kong for economic asylum. He said that it was found that doing so would face legal consequences.

Since the end of the Chinese war in 1949, Hong Kong has a history of asylum seekers from Southeast Asia. Now, it has a large number of asylum seekers from all over the world. Gradually, by April 2015, there are 9,900 international citizens seeking asylum. Most of them are in Southeast Asia and India.

The Hong Kong Government provides subsidized accommodation, free food and basic medical care free of charge to all applicants as they can not work until the visa is finalized. As a result, they are witnessing long queues of international citizens waiting to enter their country.

China is also likely to exert pressure on Hong Kong. In 1997, Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region of China. After the Sino-British Joint Declaration came into force in 1984, China has been opposed to India’s position in Arunachal Pradesh, Tibet and, more recently, Pakistan.

Business as usual for bus operators after fatal Muar crash

0

SINGAPORE: The bus operator of the Golden Mile Complex, which serves primarily the Singapore-Malaysia route, does not seem to have seriously affected the lives of 14 people on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) in a bus crash in Mahapo claimed.

Carrier staff said on Sunday that they did not notice an increase in canceled orders or a drop in sales after the accident.

They added that given the strong demand for traditional festive seasons, it might be premature to have night service (traditionally not popular with Singaporeans).

The festive season means demand for traditionally less popular night rides is high among Singaporeans. (Photo: Loke Kok Fai)

Some of the passenger channel news Asia interviews also seem to be related to any possible security issues related to the accident.

“So far, it’s more convenient to take a bus and they can not speed up that much,” says Mr. Hemraj Damal, who travels between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur twice a month. “They control (buses) well, 100 km / h “.

The speed of the bus is limited to 90 km / h on the freeway, but it should be understood that some space of up to 10 km / h is given in practice.

Another frequent visitor to Malaysia, Ms N Ahilla, added that she found that most of the buses on this route were “very safe”.

“Even if it is a long journey, you should only give the bus driver confidence. Usually it (the accident) will not happen. There is always a risk factor, but if you want to enjoy your vacation and all, just continue your journey.

Malaysian Hasfezal Hasan, a driver with more than 10 years of experience plying the Singapore-Malaysia highway, insists the route is safe.

“Where the accident occurred, it’s a straight road from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur – there are no corners,” said Mr Hasfezal in Malay. “But maybe because of the time – it happened at 3am so maybe fatigue set in.”

Under Malaysian law, two drivers are required to rotate duties for journeys over 300 kilometres or those that take longer than four hours to complete.

However, Mr Hasfezal, who drives for operator Sri Maju, said these rules are not always followed by some operators.

“There are no rushed trips for my company that departs from any station, be it from Malaysia or Singapore. We have timings,” said Mr Hasfezal. “The problem now is when we are late, we’re asked to rush. My company doesn’t ask us to rush, but I don’t know about other companies.”

Tens of thousands flee Christmas Day typhoon in Philippines

0

DARAGA, Philippines –

Infants, toddlers and the elderly were loaded on military trucks in the downpours of the Philippines on Sunday, with tens of thousands of people fleeing a powerful typhoon and rolling towards a disaster-prone archipelago.

Officials warn that up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) of coastal waves, landslides and flash floods can be seen as the result of the closure of the Nock 10 on the Bicol peninsula and nearby islands.

In one of the largest Christian holidays, more than 100,000 people have left their homes and, in the face of typhoon threats, officials say hundreds of thousands may be displaced.

A governor in the evacuation center to provide roast pig, in order to lure people to give up celebrations at home.

“The flood scares me, and whenever I hear an upcoming typhoon, I want to vomit,” 68-year-old Criselda Buenvenuto told AFP that she joined a neighbor to shelter in a school in Santo Domingo.

The unch ed widow lived alone in the kitchen of her house, and the rest were destroyed in a typhoon ten years ago, killing more than a thousand people.

In the village of Alcala, about 100 babies, young children, parents and old people were trucked to another school on the slopes of the active Manon volcano. The rain and strong winds shook the trees at noon.

“There’s a lot of ashes on the slopes (Manon). Heavy rains can drive them out and bury our homes in the mud,” says Alberto Lindo, an agricultural village official, with 3,300 people.

“We went with loudspeakers to instruct our people to eat breakfast, pack and board military trucks,” he added.

The Philippine and international weather services said Nok 10, named after a bird found in Laos, hit Bicol on Sunday night in the main southern Luzon.

The US Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts winds of 231 kilometers (144 miles) per hour and 278 kilometers of gusts when the Nock 10 landed on the now isolated island of Catanduños.

The government forced more than 12,000 residents to leave the coast of Catanduones, provincial deputy governor Shirley Abundo said.

“Please evacuate as soon as you have time,” she said in a live call from ABS-CBN.

Near Catanduanes in the province of Camanines, Governor Miguel Villafuerte said on his Facebook page that nearly 90,000 residents had been removed from their homes as part of his “zero casualties” target.

In another article on Twitter, the governor hinted at the difficulty of persuading people to recognize the dangers of approaching Christmas celebrations.

“Please evacuate, we will provide roast pig in the evacuation center,” he said.

Weather forecasters say the typhoon will eventually affect nearly 42 million people in the region, including the capital of Manila Monday.

Bicol’s civil defense officials say nearly half a million people in the region are in jeopardy and need to move out.

Military and local governments sent Christmas trucks to clear coastal communities and other areas in the previous storms that suffered landslides or outbreaks of floods.

About 20 typhoons or smaller storms hit the Philippines each year, routinely killing hundreds, and Bicol is often the first hit.

It is to cause disaster response to maximize, reduce casualties proud.

Nock 10, which will arrive outside the normal typhoon season, causes all ferry services and commercial flights to be suspended in Bicol.

At the port of Tabarko, stranded passengers sat in the ferry terminal building, with their luggage and children, staring at the vast sea, and some wanting to pass through Catanduos.

Manila’s rescue workers and the northern flood-prone Central Luzon Plain have already started on standby, evacuation centers open, food and other rations stored.

Sunday’s Coast Guard ordered beachheads south of Manila to clear holidaymakers on Monday, while residents of the capital’s waterfront slums were warned to leave their homes.

A violent, tsunami-like wave called the storm surge destroys the city of Tacloban and the surrounding area. When the Super Typhoon Swallow raids the central Philippines in November 2013, 7,350 people were killed or missing.
