Singapore unveils plan to bolster its status as an Asian financial hub

0

SINGAPORE – Singapore unveiled a roadmap for strengthening its status as a financial hub in Asia, with the aim of growing the sector more than 4 per cent a year and creating thousands of jobs.

“With technology transforming the way financial services are produced, delivered, and consumed, it is critical that Singapore’s financial sector also transforms, to stay relevant and competitive,” the Monetary Authority of Singapore said in a statement on Monday.

The central bank said Singapore aims to be a leading international wealth management hub, as well as an Asian hub for fund management. It also wants to be a centre for foreign exchange price discovery and liquidity in the Asian time zone.

“Singapore is currently the third largest FX centre globally. With Asia expected to attract a larger share of global investment flows, MAS will encourage key FX players to anchor their matching and pricing engines here, to enable market participants to benefit from better liquidity and greater efficiency in executing FX transactions,” the central bank said.

The MAS said it is working with the financial industry to develop Singapore as an Asian centre for capital raising and enterprise financing, as well as an infrastructure financing hub.

It also seeks to develop Singapore as a leading centre for Asian fixed income, and a global capital for Asian insurance and risk transfer.

A focus of the roadmap is encouraging the adoption of technology to increase efficiency, the central bank said.

To this end, the MAS said it will take steps such as collaborating with financial institutions to create common utilities for services including electronic payments, as well as investing in research and development to develop solutions such as “distributed ledger technology” for inter-bank payments and trade finance.

The MAS will also expand cross-border co-operation agreements with other fintech centres to help grow Singapore as a base for foreign fintech start-ups, and will harness technology to simplify financial institutions’ regulatory compliance.

The industry transformation map aims to achieve growth in financial sector real value-added of 4.3 per cent annually, and to create 3,000 net jobs in financial services, and 1,000 net jobs in the fintech sector annually, the central bank said.

Love Dr Pimple Popper? This may be your new favourite Instagram account

0

I don’t know about you, but there is something oddly satisfying about videos of popping blackheads and zits, heck, that’s probably one of the reasons why Dr. Pimple Popper (aka Dr. Sandra Lee) is super famous.

But admittedly, some are too graphic for me to handle (blood gets me a little nauseous). Thank the heavens I found another Instagram account that also gives utmost satisfaction, and something probably you never knew you needed and wanted-hair plucking videos care of @tweezist.

The @tweezist is based in Seoul, Korea. Most of her (yes, it’s a lady!) video clips are actually her pulling hair from her own leg unless stated in the caption.

She shared that when she was nine years old, she had to wear a cast for months which made her legs the perfect breeding ground for ingrown hair.

She now finds it oddly satisfying to pluck every single one and started taping them through a microscope camera for her friends to see. When she saw the positive reactions, she decided to post them all on social media for the world to see.

Some videos are fairly easy on the eyes, while some get a bit little gross like the ingrown hairs hidden under scabs. It sounds so bad, yet it’s so, so good to watch.

Since her rise to fame, she’s been getting a lot of messages from her followers. They’re usually questions about how to care for ingrown hair and also what tools to use to extract them. Unfortunately, some of her tweezing tools are only available in Korea, but one brand she also loves is Tweezerman. So yeah, I just put it out here for your own curiosity.

Now let me go back to watching a ton of her plucking videos. BRB!

Actor Kevin Spacey comes out as gay amid harassment allegations

0

After years of refusing to address rumours about his sexuality, Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey said on Sunday he has chosen to live his life as a gay man.

Spacey, 58, who won Oscars for “The Usual Suspects” and”American Beauty,” made the declaration in a post on Twitter.

He apologised to fellow actor Anthony Rapp in the same post for an incident Rapp said occurred in 1986. Rapp, who went on to star in the Broadway musical “Rent”, was 14 at the time and starting his career.

Spacey said he was “horrified” to hear Rapp’s story of the encounter, which he said “I honestly do not remember” because it occurred more than 30 years ago. He also said he owed Rapp a”sincere apology” for what he said would have been “deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour.”

Rapp’s story “has encouraged me to address other things in my life,” Spacey wrote.

“I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I now choose to live life as a gay man.”

“I want to deal with this honestly and openly,” he said, “and that starts with me examining my own behaviour.”

Rapp described in an interview attending a party hosted by Spacey in which the actor picked him up, brought him to a bed and lay down on top of him after other guests left. Rapp, who said he had the impression Spacey was drunk, said he pushed him away and left.

Spacey, a Tony Award winner for “Lost in Yonkers”, stars in the Netflix political drama “House of Cards”. He also served for 10 years as artistic director of London’s Old Vic theatre company.

New Orchard Road development Design Orchard to launch open call for local designers

0

SINGAPORE: An open call for the new Design Orchard development in Orchard Road will be launched in November this year.

The new development, which aims to boost local brands and showcase design talent, had its name and logo unveiled by Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran during a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday (Oct 30).

The two-and-a-half-storey development will house a retail showcase on the first level, an incubation space on the upper floors and an events space on the rooftop.

Local design company Naiise, which has been appointed the operator for the retail showcase, will launch an open call for designers in November.

At least 60 local brands will be featured in the retail showcase, with a focus on emerging designers.

Those selected will undergo mentorship programmes.

While this platform improves visibility for local brands, it also spells growth for the retail sector.

“We believe that there is a strong ability, if these creative agencies were to grow, that they will add back into the retail industry. They could add into the exportability of our own local unique brands,” founder of Naiise, Dennis Tay said.

Likewise, the Singapore Tourism Board hopes that the addition of this site will inject vibrancy into the Orchard Road belt.

“Today there’s no one-stop place for designers to be profiled, so Design Orchard actually aggregates all the designers in one space,” Ranita Sundra, Director of Attractions, Dining & Retail at STB said.

“Based on some of the consumer surveys that we’ve done, we know tourists seek our local products when they travel, so this is actually a good opportunity for us to attract more tourists to Orchard Road,” she added.

Design Orchard is a multi-agency effort by JTC, SPRING Singapore and the Singapore Tourism Board. It is slated for completion in late 2018.

JTC is also calling for proposals by early next year for an incubator operator to manage the incubation space.

Mr Iswaran said that Design Orchard will provide holistic support to local designers by providing a platform for them to gain access to the global market.

“Designers can also look forward to collaborations with MNCs (multinational corporations), lifestyle brands for new product development and access to overseas fashion associations,” he added.

Man arrested after allegedly trying to break into Yishun flat twice

0

A netizen has taken to Facebook to share how her flat at Yishun Street 124 was almost broken into two times yesterday (Oct 26) at around 5.20am by a 29-year-old man who was believed to be drunk.

In the post, the netizen, Mollly Molina, said that she was first woken up by a loud bang and “the sound of the window mesh grating against metal”.

Initially, she thought that it was her cat trying to squeeze itself out of the window.

Upon investigation, she saw a figure “fumbling” outside her unit.

As she was still groggy at that point, she did not suspect anything was amiss and said “hi” to the man, who ran off subsequently.

“He got stunned and ran away to the staircase. I went closer to the window and realised that holy s***, a man just broke 2 bars of the window grilles! So I ran to wake my husband up and called the cops.”

The man, however, returned moments later and apparently tried to enter the house a second time.

Molly continued: “Right after the call, we heard footsteps approaching our door. So I went to the peephole and saw the man (fair skinned, tall and wearing dark coloured long sleeves and pants) trying to push on the common room’s window this time.

“So my husband opened the main door. The man got shocked and ran away again. By this time, I have armed myself with a long kitchen knife, and my husband with a hammer.”

Things did not end there for the couple, as the man came back once again. This time, he did not try to enter the house but loitered outside the House Development Board unit, said the netizen.

Police officers then arrived and arrested the man.

Said a police spokesman in response to a Stomp query: “On Oct 26, 2017, at 5.25am, police were alerted to a case of attempted housebreaking by night at Block 124 Yishun Street 11.

“A 29-year-old man was arrested in relation to the case.

“Police investigations are ongoing.”

Molly said that the man broke a small shoe shelf the family kept outside, possibly when he was trying to climb in through the window.

She, however, was thankful that her child was not affected by what had happened.

“The whole ordeal lasted about 2.5 hours. It really shook me and I was still shaking (in fear and anger) hours after that. I couldn’t imagine what would have happened had he managed to get in. Luckily, my 2-year-old boy slept peacefully throughout,” the netizen wrote.

Technicolour Thailand is back after a black-clad mourning year for late king

0

BANGKOK – Thailand officially ended a year of mourning for its late King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Monday, marking a return to colours for some after a monotone year during which many wore black from head-to-toe out of respect for their revered monarch.

Hundreds of thousands of people thronged Bangkok’s historic quarter to bid farewell last week to King Bhumibol, who died in October 2016. His US$90 million (S$122.8 million) funeral, full of pomp and ancient ritual, took place over five days.

His remains were brought to their final resting place within Bangkok’s Grand Palace on Sunday. Portraits of the bespectacled late king, who became a father figure for many during a seven-decade reign, were hung across Thailand.

The black-and-white funeral bunting that had hung on the gates of Bangkok’s Government House for a year was taken down on Monday and Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha made a televised announcement to mark the official end of the mourning period.

“The government would like to thank officials, both soldiers and civilians … and the more than 10 million Thais who came to pay respects to the royal body over the past year,” Prayuth said.

May Kanokwattana, 29, an office worker, wore bright yellow as she waited at the Siam BTS, a major Bangkok transport interchange.

“I wore black for one year. I needed to show my sorrow. Today is the first day I am wearing a different colour,” May told Reuters.

She also wore a pin with the Thai number nine out of respect for King Bhumibol, who was also known as the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty.

Colours have a profound meaning for Thais. Astrological rules followed by many in the Southeast Asian nation assign a colour to each day of the week.

King Bhumibol was born on a Monday, a day associated with the colour yellow. His only son, new King Maha Vajiralongkorn, was also born on a Monday.

Some people shared charts on social media showing which colours would be considered luckiest to wear.

“For confidence, health and power wear orange. For good support wear pale green,” said one chart.

Pattinya Mankongwongcharoen, 49, an accountant wearing a peach-coloured dress, said: “I won’t continue wearing black because the mourning period is officially over and to do so would be disrespectful.”

Others said they would continue to wear muted colours.

“I’m still grieving. I’ll wear black or grey for a few more weeks,” said Pimsuda Chatree, 37, a shop owner.

Man arrested after allegedly taking secret videos of students from 3 girls' schools in Bukit Timah

0

A man was arrested for allegedly used his phone to secretly record videos of students from three girls’ schools in Bukit Timah.

The incident happened last Friday morning (Oct 27) when the man was spotted lurking outside Singapore Chinese Girls’ School.

Parents from three schools in the area, namely Raffles Girls’ School, Methodist Girls’ School and Singapore Chinese Girl’s School were warned of a suspicious man lurking outside the schools via various chat groups.

A parent, Ms Xiao, told Shin Min Daily News that she was sending her daughter to school when she noticed the man walking around with a phone in his hand, behaving suspiciously.

Ms Xiao said that many parents have observed this man wandering around the girl schools in the area.

She said: “At about 7.20am, I saw him going through the gates to enter the school.

“Later I was notified by my chat group that he was arrested. “

Another mother, Ms Yang , 43, told reporters that her daughter was a student at Raffles Girls’ School, and she became worried when she first heard of the man.

She added: “Fortunately, he has been arrested, but I will still remind my daughter to be careful.”

A Lianhe Wanbao reporter, Ms Chen, 23, revealed that she had been harassed by the same man while she was a student seven years ago.

The man had approached Ms Chen for a survey, but started messaging her to chat after a few days, reports Lianhe Wanbao.

Said Ms Chen: “Even his methods remain unchanged.

“When I heard from my colleague that there was a man arrested for harassing female students, I thought it could be him even without looking at the photos.

“When I saw the photos, I recognised him right away.

“I never expected him to resume his activities after getting arrested last year.

“I can still remember the weird way he would stare at you.”

It is understood that a wary parent called the police, and the man had faced similar charges in the past year, including the harassment of students, stalking a girl near a junior college nearby, and recording a video of the student crossing the road.

In addition, he was also charged with using a pinhole camera to take an upskirt video in April 2016.

In response to media queries, a police spokesman said that a 41-year-old man was arrested on Friday (Oct 27) for causing public nuisance.
