1.5m-python found at townhouse in Changi

0

SINGAPORE: Residents living in a townhouse in Loyang got a nasty surprise early on Monday morning (Oct 30) when they found a python in their home.

Project manager Mr Melvin Yap, 46, was sound asleep at about 6.30am when he was startled awake by loud screams of: “Snake!”

He rushed downstairs and found a snake wrapped around a birdcage in his home at Loyang Townhouses in Changi.

“It was outside wrapped around my birdcage; it tried to eat my pet bird,” he told Channel NewsAsia.

“My wife (had) come back from the night shift, my domestic worker was feeding the bird – both of them didn’t see the snake at first,” he said. “Then my domestic worker shouted, ‘snake!’ Then after that everybody started screaming.”

“I was upstairs sleeping, at first I thought it was a lizard or a cockroach,” he added.

The family members managed to guide the snake – which Mr Yap estimated to be about 1.5m long – into a plastic bag using a spade.

They then sent the snake to the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) in the afternoon, which identified the snake as a python.

“They were grateful we didn’t kill it,” said Mr Yap. “Most of the time, out of fear or ignorance, people can kill (them).”

He added that ACRES would probably microchip the snake and then find a suitable location and release it into the wild.

Chow Yun Fat's wife recalls unborn child's death 26 years ago in exclusive interview

0

When her unborn daughter died in her womb, Mrs Chow Yun Fat did not cry. Not because she wasn’t devastated, but rather, she was too shell-shocked.

In an exclusive interview with Hong Kong’s Apple Daily, superstar Chow Yun Fat’s wife Jasmine Tan talks about her painful memories from 1991.

The Singaporean has been married to the iconic Hong Kong actor for 31 years and the couple are known to keep a low-key lifestyle outside of showbiz.

In the first part of a 15-episode interview with Apple Daily titled “My Husband is Chow Yun Fat”, Tan talks about her pregnancy five years into their marriage in 1986.

She revealed that they were both elated when they found out that she was expecting and Chow had even announced the news to the media – but a twist of fate led them on a different path instead.

When Tan was nine months into her pregnancy, her unborn baby died due to strangulation from the umbilical cord. Her doctor advised her to remove the baby by caesarian, but Tan refused to and eventually chose to deliver the stillborn.

“I said no matter what, I still want to go through it [giving birth naturally]. After all, I’ve already carried my baby for nine months,” Tan recalled.

Chow had instructed the nurses to carry the baby away immediately as he did not want his wife to have to go through another painful episode. However, Tan managed to catch a glimpse of the corpse before they took it away.

Chow Yun Fat and wife: Married for over 30 years and counting

THAT FATEFUL DAY

In the tearful interview, Tan said: “I still think about her today. This experience is indeed… unimaginable.”

A day before she found out her baby had died, Tan said she was telling Chow that their daughter was being good and did not kick or move around in her womb. She found this odd and consulted her gynaecologist the next morning.

Till today, she still remembers details from the fateful day: “It was raining so heavily the next morning when I went to see my doctor at Mongkok that the rainwater reached my knees.”

At the clinic, the doctor did not reveal any details and told her to go to the hospital immediately.

“I looked at the doctor and realised that something was not right. But it never occurred to me that it would be this bad,” said Tan, who added that Chow took her to the hospital immediately after the consultation.

“WHY ME?”

When she knew her baby girl had died prematurely, Tan said she was not able to cry.

“I didn’t know what to do or think. I didn’t cry. All I could think about was ‘Why me? Why must this happen to me?'”, revealed Tan.

Tan said Chow was also devastated and accompanied her every day. It took the couple seven years to try to overcome the trauma.

“My daughter has died. The love that I have [for her] is something I’m not able to give her anymore. But it is something that I can give to others,” said Tan.

Ever since the incident, the couple have been helping out the needy. They have also committed 99 per cent of their assets and belongings to charity.

The two decided not to have any children after, as Chow did not want his wife to suffer from any complications. Though childless, the couple are known to have a loving marriage.

'Pineapple pen' star to serenade Trump on Japan visit

0

Tokyo – US President Donald Trump will be serenaded with a bizarre hit song about a “pen- pineapple-apple-pen” on his visit to Japan next week.

Japan will roll out wacky crooner Pikotaro – whose 45-second “PPAP” ditty went viral last year after being shared by pop star Justin Bieber – when Trump comes to town at the start of an Asian tour, Kyodo News agency reported.

The singer, apparently a favourite of Trump’s grandchildren, will attend a dinner hosted by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, government sources told Kyodo.

Arabella Kushner, the six-year-old daughter of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, was seen singing along to the tune in a clip shared on Instagram in November by her mother.

The repetitive earworm, whose video features the dancing Pikotaro dressed in his garish animal-print costume, set a Guinness World Record as the shortest song to break into the Billboard Hot 100.

Trump is also set to play a round of golf with Japanese pro-Hideki Matsuyama during his visit.

Korean woman probed for pouring boiling ramen over friend

0

A woman in her 20s, surnamed Kim, poured ramen from a boiling pot on her roommate, surnamed Koo, and threatened her with a weapon on Oct. 24, local media outlets reported Friday.

After pouring the boiling contents onto Koo, Kim had threatened the victim with a weapon for an hour, containing her in the house, when the victim was suffering from burns on her face and arms.

Witnesses said that Koo was able to ask for help from her downstairs’ neighbour.

The neighbour immediately called the ambulance and Koo was taken to the emergency room for severe burn treatment. Koo will need treatment for her burns for a year.

Kim told police that the assault was essentially due to her discovery of Koo’s malicious comments on social media concerning herself to acquaintances.

The police, however, decided to close the case, saying that Kim and Koo were both at fault for assault.

They did not detain Kim but only urged the two to reconcile with each other. Police said that they reached this conclusion due to the victim being “unable to speak.”

Online commenters expressed their anger and disbelief with regards to the inadequacy and unprofessionalism of the police.

Following the online debate on the outcome of the case, it is reported that the police now have filed an arrest warrant for Kim for causing serious injury and forcible containment to her roommate.

As a result, many cabbies and lorry drivers who were recipients of her kindness decided to form the convoy on their own as a special way to send Ms Chen off in her final stretch.

Many other businessmen and representatives from various associations, numbering about 300 people, came down to send Ms Chen off too.

In addition, members of the Zhang Clan Association and Hwa Siah Musical Association also took part in the procession, forming a snaking line about 500m long.

Mr Teo’s son, Dr Alexis Teo, revealed that Union Gas Holdings started at Defu Lane 11, and his grandmother often went back to the place to offer her prayers, hence the family decided for the escort convoy to circle the place once before heading to the Mandai Crematorium.

Throughout Mr Teo’s career, his mother played an important part.

Although they came from a humble background, Mr Teo’s mother worked hard and saved so that her son could start his own business one day.

Mr Teo said that he was deeply affected and saddened by his mother’s passing.

He said: “I have thought it through this past few days.

“Death is an inevitable part of life.

“I feel a little better now.”

The local weather agency predicts the biting cold will last until Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, the lowest morning temperature is expected to record 6.2 degrees.
