Andie Chen and Kate Pang leave Mediacorp

0

Singapore celebrity couple Andie Chen and Kate Pang have left Mediacorp to focus on their online channel Kandie Family.

Andie wrote about starting the new chapter in his career in a statement on Nov 1:

“Most of my 10 years in acting, I was attached to the company. They have given me a start in my career, a channel to explore my passions and most importantly they played a big part in the formation of my family. For these reasons and more, I’ll forever be grateful, and I am happy to be moving on to the next stage of my career with their blessings.

“The end of my contract is by no means an end to my relationship with Mediacorp, we are still working on projects currently and will be working together regularly in the future.

“I have always placed my growth as an artist as the top priority in every career decision I make. This means making unique and seemingly illogical career choices at times. Setting up my own company will give me the freedom to pursue projects that I am passionate about and I believe this is the only way an artist can reach his full potential.

“I look forward to challenging myself in the days ahead with projects on stage, online, film and television. Not only as a performer, but also a producer and director.

“I want to end with a final thank you to Mediacorp for the decade of opportunities and friendship.”

Andie and Kate’s YouTube channel currently has over 15,000 subscribers and their videos have garnered over 2,000,000 views. They also have a Facebook page with over 95,000 followers.

Ms Georgina Chang, Head of The Celebrity Agency said: “Kate and Andie are an extremely talented couple. We’ve enjoyed working with them and will continue to work with them on an ad-hoc basis. They are true artistic souls and stay authentic to their beliefs and passion. I know they will continue to do very well as artistes and I wish them every success.”

Chow Yun Fat once told his wife he will not marry her

0

Not many celebrities can say they have been married for over three decades. But Hong Kong actor Chow Yun Fat and his wife are one of the few exceptions.

Their marriage has lasted for 31 years, and it almost did not happen.

In a 15-episode interview with Apple Daily, titled My Husband is Chow Yun Fat, his wife, Jasmine Tan, spoke about their early days as a couple.

The Singaporean revealed that when she first started dating Chow in the mid-80s, the actor had once told her: “You must remember something, I will not marry you.”

Before he dated Tan, Chow was once married to Hong Kong actress Candice Yu in 1983, but the two separated after nine months. His experience at a failed marriage could probably be one of the reasons why he thought he would not be marrying again.

Some women would have walked away if their boyfriend told them marriage was not on his cards, but Tan felt differently.

“To me, when you love someone, it is unconditional. You shouldn’t think too much about things. Why must you let such things weigh you down?” said Tan in the video interview.

So when Chow randomly popped the question after an overnight shoot in New York for the movie An Autumn’s Tale, Tan was shocked.

Chow Yun Fat and wife: Married for over 30 years and counting

There was no marriage proposal with a candlelight dinner, a diamond ring or roses. Just a simple: “Why don’t we get married?” sealed the deal for the two.

Till today, Tan has never questioned Chow why he decided to marry her when he said he would not.

“I didn’t ask him why he changed his mind. There’s no need to. He decided to marry me, aren’t I considered very lucky indeed? I don’t want to ask too much,” she explained.

Although the two are known to have been married in 1987, Tan revealed that they had registered their marriage in the United States in 1986 – for just US$15 (S$20).

There was no elaborate ceremony and they did not tell their parents too. So when her father found out that they were married, Tan said he was not happy at all.

“Afterall, I am the eldest daughter in the family. Sometime in 1987, Chow said ‘Okay, let’s tell your dad that we’ll host a wedding banquet’. Everyone thought we married in 1987, but we actually got married in 1986.”

The couple officially held a wedding banquet on June 5, 1987, where Tan proclaimed that “heaven has given me the best gift ever, which is to be Chow Yun Fat’s wife.”

When asked if she was disappointed that she did not have a dream wedding or proposal, Tan answered: “What’s there to be disappointed about? It’s so surprising for me. He had said he won’t marry me but he ends up taking me to the marriage registry!

“I’ve never thought of holding a dream wedding. Both of us are good together, it’s as simple as that,” laughed Tan.

CHOW SENT POSTCARDS AND CALLED DAILY

Although born in Singapore, Tan had already moved to Hong Kong in her early adult years to help out with her father’s business there.

Before she started dating Chow, Tan said she had her fair share of suitors and one of them was from Indonesia. But he did not give her a sense of security. Tan also admitted that it was fate that brought the two together.

“I did not care whether Chow was a celebrity or whoever, because I wasn’t a fan of his. From the moment we got to know each other, to when he started chasing me and told me he won’t marry me – everything seemed to happen quite naturally and we started dating just like that.”

Although the God of Gamblers may seem to be rather unromantic in asking Tan for her hand, he did seem to be very into Tan during their early courtship days.

But how did the two get to know each other? Tan said it was through a friend who kept saying that he knew Chow and that they were hanging out together.

So the sceptical Tan told her friend, “So you know Chow? Why don’t you ask him to visit Singapore one day and introduce us?”

The first time she met Chow was when she was about to leave her dad’s office when she received a call from the actor. He called from Changi Airport and asked Tan to have a meal together as he was not able to get on his flight.

“The next day in the morning, I sent Chow off at the airport – you know we Singaporeans like to send people off at airports. So I went there in my shorts, slippers and uncombed hair to send him off,” laughed Tan.

Perhaps it was this down-to-earth personality that attracted Chow.

“Since that moment until he arrived in Hong Kong, Chow would call me and write postcards to me every single day. Crazy right? He called me two to three times a day,” said Tan, who still keeps the postcards till today at her home in Singapore.

Although the couple may not have had a romantic beginning, their lasting marriage has seen them through tough times, especially when faced with the death of their unborn child in 1991.

Till today, the duo are seen as one of the few marriage role models in the showbiz industry – truly defining what #couplegoals are.

Dustin Hoffman says sex harassment claim 'not reflective of who I am'

0

LOS ANGELES – Oscar-winning actor Dustin Hoffman responded on Wednesday to an allegation of sexual harassment by a teenage intern on a film set more than 30 years ago.

“I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation. I am sorry,” Hoffman said in a statement to the magazine.

Hoffman, 80, star of “The Graduate” and “Tootsie,” said behaviour described by Anna Graham Hunter in a first person account for The Hollywood Reporter magazine was “not reflective of who I am.”

Hunter alleged in extracts from her 1985 diary and notes to her sister that Hoffman made vulgar remarks and jokes at her expense while she was working as a 17-year-old production assistant on the set of the 1985 TV film “Death of a Salesman.”

“He (Hoffman) was openly flirtatious, he grabbed my a**, he talked about sex to me and in front of me,” Hunter wrote.

Reuters could not independently confirm Hunter’s allegations.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reported that six women had made allegations of harassment and unwanted attention against movie director Brett Ratner. Ratner’s lawyer vehemently denied their claims.

A number of allegations of sexual harassment and assault have been made in recent months against some prominent Hollywood men, including producer Harvey Weinstein and actor Kevin Spacey.

“Enabling Grab payments in restaurants and shops is a significant step towards becoming the largest consumer internet platform in Southeast Asia,” Tan Hooi Ling, co-founder of Grab., said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

Grab has previously said payments would be a focus for the company and that it was open to further acquisitions after buying an Indonesian online payments startup earlier this year.

SIA unveils ‘bedroom’ suites, new economy class seats for A380s

0

SINGAPORE: National carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA) on Thursday (Nov 2) announced a facelift for its Airbus A380s involving revamped first-class suites, as well as new seats and other cabin products across other classes.

The US$850 million cabin overhaul comes as the airline marked a decade of flying the superjumbos and as the national carrier carries out a review of its business amid stiffening competition.

SIA’s chief executive Goh Choon Phong said at the launch: “The significant investment that we are making with the introduction of new cabin products demonstrates our commitment to continued investment in products and services, our long-term approach to ensure we retain our leadership position and our confidence in the future of premium full-service air travel.”

The new cabin products will be fitted on the five new A380s that SIA has on order with Airbus.

Changes include a reduction in the number of first-class suites from 12 to six and a shift of these suites from the lower deck to the upper deck.

Each suite is “significantly more spacious and offers more privacy”, said Mr Goh. It comes with sliding doors, electronically adjustable roller-blinds and a 21-inch wide leather chair upholstered by French designer Poltrona Frau. The suite also features a standalone full-flat bed measuring 27 inches by 76 inches.

The suites are designed to feel like a bedroom, SIA’s divisional vice president of customer experience Betty Wong told Channel NewsAsia in an earlier interview ahead of the launch, with passengers having the option of both a bed and a seat. Currently, the seat shares the same position as the fold-down flat bed, and disappears once the bed is made.

Apart from demand-supply considerations, the changes to the first-class suites will allow more efficient use of space in the aircraft, Mr Goh said.

Other configuration changes include a change in the number of business class seats. There are now 78 business class seats in the upper deck, compared to previous configurations of 60 and 86.

Mr Goh said the airline tapped on new technology advancements such as having a carbon fibre composite shell structure for its business class seats, compared to conventional aircraft seats which use metal as the primary support structure.

The thinner base structure allows for better optimisation of the seat and creates more under-seat storage space to accommodate a standard-size trolley bag, which Mr Goh said is a “first in the world”.

NEW SEATS FOR PREMIUM ECONOMY, ECONOMY CLASSES

The premium economy class will also get its own exclusive cabin zone. With 44 seats, the premium economy section on board the new A380 will be SIA’s biggest thus far.

The new-look cabins are also decked with the latest in-flight entertainment system featuring varying sizes of touchscreen monitors and handsets.

New seats in economy class will offer more legroom and back support, with a six-way adjustable headrest with foldable wings, SIA said. The seat will also have a “more contemporary” fabric seat cover design.

The seats will also come with an 11.1-inch touch-screen monitor, personal storage space for small personal items, a coat hook, in-seat power supply and a footrest with adjustable positions.

The research and development of the cabin upgrades began in 2013 and involved extensive customer feedback.

She added: “Ten to 20 years ago, people may expect that when you get on board, you can get a bit less but somehow the expectations have changed. The gap between what you do on the ground and in the air has narrowed.

“That’s difficult because your aircraft is a finite space so you get a lot more challenges in managing space and inventory,” she added.

The upgrade was a necessary move amid rising expectations from travellers, Ms Wong said.

The first revamped A380, flight SQ221, will depart Singapore at 8.40pm on Dec 18 and arrive at 7.40am in Sydney the next day. Additional destinations will be revealed in the coming months.

Since entering into service with SIA in October 2007, the superjumbos have flown to airports including Beijing, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, Melbourne, Mumbai, New York and Paris.

SIA upgrades first class suites to maintain its premium allure

0

Singapore Airlines Ltd unveiled one of the world’s most luxurious first class offerings for the Airbus A380, as part of an US$850 million (S$1.1 billion) product investment as it tries to retain premium customers amid tough competition from industry rivals.

The spacious suites on its A380 will rival those of Middle Eastern rivals Etihad Airways and Emirates for the crown of the world’s top first class, although unlike those airlines, Singapore Airlines has chosen not to install in-flight showers.

They will enter service in December on the first of five new A380 aircraft joining its fleet, and the retrofit work will also take place on 14 existing aircraft, it said in a statement.

The new A380s will have six first class seats, compared with 12 on the older ones.

“We are confident the result will genuinely wow our customers,” CEO Goh Choon Phong said at a media briefing to unveil the products on Thursday.

Some carriers, including United Airlines and Qantas Airways , have not installed first class on newer aircraft given a much higher demand for business class, which now often has fully flat-beds that were once exclusive to first class.

But for other airlines, first class remains a showpiece for attracting elite passengers and for broader brand marketing.

Singapore Airlines offers first class customers a choice of Dom Perignon or Krug Champagne and suites that can combine into a double bed for passengers travelling together.

Singapore Airlines is also improving its business class, premium economy and economy products in the newly fitted A380s, the first of which will start flying from Singapore to Sydney on Dec. 18.

In 2007, Sydney was the destination for the A380’s first-ever commercial flight on Singapore Airlines. The Singaporean carrier is a major player in the highly competitive”Kangaroo route” between Australia and Europe.

Singapore Airlines and Hong Kong-based rival Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd are struggling against mounting international competition from Chinese and Middle Eastern rivals, without domestic flights to underpin their earnings.

After a surprise fourth-quarter loss, Singapore Airlines set up a dedicated transformation office to review its strategy in May, although it has not released a cost-cutting target.

The carrier intends to cut fuel use, review its supplier relationships and invest in digital technology under a three-year transformation plan to boost its competitiveness, according to an internal newsletter released in September.

Singapore Airlines has also begun deploying low-cost carrier Scoot on long-haul routes with lower premium demand, including Athens and Honolulu.

ICA raises fees, introduces e-application system for PR applicants

0

SINGAPORE — Those who wish to become Permanent Residents (PR) here must apply online from next month, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Thursday (Nov 02) as it announced a new electronic application system as well as changes to the fees involved.

Currently, those applying for permanent residency must make an appointment with the ICA and submit physical copies of the relevant documents in person.

From Dec 18, applicants no longer need to make an appointment to submit their applications, said the ICA.

Instead, they can fill up an online application form on the ICA’s website, and electronically submit scanned copies of the necessary documents.

The total fees paid by successful applicants will increase by S$20 to S$120 under the new system.

Applicants are currently not charged a processing fee. Those whose applications are successful will be required to pay for a S$100 entry permit.

Under the new system, all applicants will be charged a S$100 processing fee when they submit their forms online.

Those who are successful will pay an additional S$20 for the entry permit.

Processing time for the PR application can take four to six months. The process can take a longer time in some cases.

Those who have already secured in-person appointments with the ICA before Dec 18 are not affected, and can continue to submit their hardcopy applications under the current system. They will not be affected by the higher fee structure, said ICA.

The authority added, however, that all available in-person appointment slots before Dec 18 have been taken up, and that no additional slots will be added.

Bangladeshi driver sues over movie mobile mix-up

0

A Bangladeshi auto-rickshaw driver is suing for damages after his phone number was used in a movie, leading to a barrage of calls from female fans of the film’s star that he says nearly destroyed his marriage.

Ijajul Mia told AFP Wednesday he had received hundreds of calls every day since the release in June of “Rajniti”, in which the country’s top movie star Shakib Khan is seen giving the number to his girlfriend.

“The use of my number in the movie made my life completely miserable,” he said.

“Every day I got hundreds of calls from mostly female fans of Shakib Khan. They would say ‘Hello Shakib, I am your fan. Do you have two minutes to talk to me?'”

Mia said he had been asked to leave his family home since the movie’s release and his new wife had threatened to leave him.

He argued that he couldn’t take a new number because his clients knew the old one and he would lose business.

“I am a newly married man with one daughter. When these calls started coming, my wife thought that I was having an affair,” he said.

One fan even travelled 500 kilometres to see him after learning where he lived.

Now Mia wants to sue Khan, who also produced and directed the movie, for damages of five million taka ($60,975).

His lawyer M. A Majed said he had filed the suit this week, but the district judge was initially hesitant to accept it.

“The judge ordered an investigation after we submitted evidence showing how these phone calls have almost destroyed the life of Ijajul,” Majed told AFP.
