Tender launched for Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail assets company

0

SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s MyHSR Corporation and Singapore’s SG HSR on Wednesday (Dec 20) called a joint tender for an assets company for the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail (HSR) project.

This company will be responsible for designing, building, financing and maintaining all rolling stock and rail assets as well as operating these assets for the high speed rail, the two companies said in a joint press release.

The assets company will also “coordinate the system’s network capacity” for operations and maintenance needs, the press release added.

Tender submissions will be evaluated for their “technical solution, commercial robustness, financial sustainability and price”, it said.

Singapore and Malaysia signed a bilateral agreement for the HSR project in December 2016.

It will be served by four trains every hour once it starts operations in 2026, two of which will offer an express service between the Bandar Malaysia terminal in Kuala Lumpur and Jurong East in Singapore every 30 minutes.

The HSR project will generate “huge socio-economic benefits arising from the increased connectivity and travel efficiencies”, said Mohd Nur Ismal Mohamed Kamal, MyHSR Corporation’s chief executive officer, adding that the the company was “delighted with the progress thus far”.

“Today marks a major milestone for this game-changing project, which will dramatically improve connectivity between Singapore and Malaysia,” said SG HSR’s managing director Rama Venkta.

“We are heartened by the enthusiastic response from the market for the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore HSR so far.”

Bidders will have until Jun 29 next year to submit proposals to MyHSR Corporation and SG HSR, with the companies hoping to select a qualified bidder by the end of 2018.

All bidders – whether based in Malaysia, Singapore or overseas – are welcome, said the two companies.

A tender briefing will be held in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 23 next year.

K-pop star Jonghyun joins the ill-fated '27 Club'

0

PARIS – With his suicide, Kim Jong-Hyun, lead singer of South Korean boyband SHINee, joins an ill-fated group of famous rock stars who passed away at 27 – the so-called “27 Club”.

He was found on Monday in a hotel room in the South Korean capital Seoul in what police said was suicide.

Rolling Stones founding member Brian Jones, guitarist Jimi Hendrix, singer Janis Joplin, The Doors singer Jim Morrison, Nirvana singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, and British soul singer Amy Winehouse are the other major “members” of the notorious club.

AMY WINEHOUSE

Winehouse, one of Britain most famous soul singers, was found dead in her bed at her London flat on July 23, 2011 after years of drug and alcohol addiction.

The singer of “Back to Black” and “Rehab”, won six Grammy awards, one of them posthumously. She died of alcohol poisoning.

KURT COBAIN

Cobain, who died on April 5, 1994, had a well-documented struggle with heroin during his brief career with US grunge rockers Nirvana. But it was not drugs that claimed his life, but his own hand.

Just weeks after taking an overdose of tranquilisers in Rome, Cobain, who was married to troubled rocker Courtney Love and best known for the hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, killed himself with a shotgun at his house in Seattle.

JIM MORRISON

On July 3, 1971, the US Doors singer of the hits “Light My Fire” and the brooding masterpiece “The End” died in his bathtub in his Paris flat, alcoholic and obese, after suffering a heart attack.

His grave is one of the most visited at the Pere-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

JANIS JOPLIN

On October 4, 1970, US singer Joplin, known for her bluesy vocal style, dies of a suspected heroin overdose. Her album “Pearl” was released posthumously and became her biggest seller.

JIMI HENDRIX

Hendrix, the pioneering US guitar wizard whose whose hits included “Purple Haze” and “Hey Joe”, died on September 18, 1970.

He choked on his own vomit in a hotel in London after swallowing sleeping pills and drinking red wine.

BRIAN JONES

Jones, who left the Rolling Stones after disagreements with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, had problems with drugs and alcohol.

He drowned in the swimming pool on his estate in Sussex, southern England during the night of July 2-3, 1969 and was found by his girlfriend. An inquest recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.

Simei resident lines up 7 fridges, furniture in common corridor, blocking neighbour's way

0

Stomp contributor Julie is at her wits’ end regarding her next-door neighbours who have placed bulky items along the common corridor they share with her and other residents at Block 136 Simei Street 1.

On Dec 17 at around 1am, Julie had come back from a trip overseas and struggled to squeeze herself and her luggage through the small space left in the corridor.

In the process, she cut herself on one of the pieces of furniture that were placed outside.

“There are sofas, ceiling-high cabinets and even a fridge outside of their unit,” said the Stomp contributor in a phone interview.

According to Julie, the problem has been around ever since she moved into her seventh-floor unit in Dec, 2015.

She is now worried about her safety.

“My life is at risk,” she said. “If a fire breaks out, how am I supposed to run?”

She added that she even struggles to go grocery shopping as she cannot fit her trolley through the corridor to get to the lifts.

When asked if she has talked to her neighbours regarding the problem, she said that they were “unapproachable” and “unfriendly” and she did not want to risk getting into a confrontation.

“I don’t know what else to do,” she said, exasperated.

“I hope the authorities can do something about it.”

In response to Stomp media queries, a spokesman for East Coast – Fengshan Town Council said that they are aware of the situation and have served notice to the unit.

She added that they are monitoring the situation closely.

Jonghyun's death sends shock waves through K-pop scene

0

The death of Jonghyun, the talented main vocalist of SHINee, sent shock waves among fans and peers that resonated throughout the country and the K-pop scene.

Jonghyun, whose real name was Kim Jong-hyun, was found in a rented studio apartment in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul at 6:10 p.m., Monday. The 27-year-old singer had suffered a cardiac arrest upon discovery and was taken to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead after attempts to revive him failed.

Police confirmed Tuesday that his death was a suicide, saying they would wrap up the case after talking to his family.

A memorial service was held for him at the funeral hall of Asan Medical Center in Songpa-gu, Seoul, prior to the funeral that will be held on Thursday. Jonghyun’s SHINee bandmates Onew, Key and Minho received the mourners. Among those present were S.M. founder Lee Soo-man and his artists BoA, members of Girls’ Generation, EXO and NCT.

Hundreds of fans flocked to the memorial venue to offer their condolences. Many fans wept in silence, and the few who broke out wailing were consoled by fellow fans.

“I couldn’t think of anything (when I heard the news). Actually, though I saw (funeral altars) there but I still don’t feel it’s real,” said Im Hye-rim, a 27-year-old fan.

She said she felt as if she was close to the late singer.

“I liked him just because he was a good singer. But as I got to know him more, he was a very sensitive and mischievous person. I really liked that. I felt as if he’s just a nice brother rather than a celebrity.”

Valentina, 24-year-old from Chile who had been a fan for eight years, said that she never imagined such a thing could happen.

“I even went to his concert recently. We (the fans) always knew that he was sensitive but. …,” the tearful fan trailed off.

On Tuesday, Jonghyun’s agency S.M. Entertainment paid tribute to him in a message on its official social media page.

“Jonghyun was the best artist who loved music more than anyone else, enjoyed the stage, and liked communicating with the fans through music. We will remember him forever,” it wrote. Thousands of fans wrote words of goodbye in different languages.

Fans were further torn at the evidence that showed how much the singer had suffered before making the tragic decision.

In the posthumously revealed will — which Jonghyun had sent to his close friend Nine9 of the band Dear Cloud — laid bare the serious state of depression he suffered.

“I was broken from inside. The depression slowly chipped me away, finally devouring me,” he wrote.

Jonghyun indicated that he sought medical help for his depression to no avail.

Nine9 said that she and Jonghyun’s family agreed that the letter should be revealed to the public.

“I’m concerned over possible controversies, but I think he (Jonghyun) expected that when he asked (me to take the letter). I decided to do the last thing I can do for him,” she said.

Having debuted in 2008 as the main vocalist for SHINee, Jonghyun has been noted for his singing, dancing and songwriting skills. His solo career was also a success, having been nominated for the best male artist award at the 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

Jonghyun was onstage just days before his death, having wrapped up his solo concerts in Seoul last week and pre-taped a segment for a cable show “Night Goblin” that was to be aired Sunday.

SHINee was also scheduled to hold concerts in Tokyo and Osaka in February.

Local media quoted his acquaintances as saying that he was also working on a solo track and had recently purchased a car.

Jonghyun’s untimely death sparked calls from the fans to S.M. Entertainment, urging it to take better care of their artists. The K-pop artists, particularly from leading agencies, are said to undergo tough training and hectic schedule from very young age.

“S.M. please take care of your idols and artists from now on. … Remember they are more than your source of income, your money-generator, they are humans, too. There might be someone in your company facing the same demons Jonghyun battled. In the whole industry too I’m sure. Please acknowledge depression as a serious issue and be the first one to step up and make a change,” a fan named Veronica wrote on S.M.’s official Facebook page.
