Train fault on Downtown Line causes delays during morning rush hour

0

SINGAPORE: A train fault on the Downtown Line (DTL) caused travel delays during the morning rush hour on Thursday (Dec 21).

SBS Transit said on its official Twitter account at around 7.50am that train service on the line was delayed from Downtown station towards Expo station, and that commuters should add 10 minutes to their travel time.

It said at around 8am that full service had resumed.

A Channel NewsAsia reader who did not want to be named said he boarded the train at Bukit Panjang MRT station at around 7am, but the train did not move off and an announcement was made 10 minutes later telling commuters to alight.

Commuters were told that bridging bus services were available.

Twitter user Jessie Chaw posted that she was told to get off the train at Bugis, but said that there were no free bus services available for passengers.

Delays were also reported by Twitter user Mohammad Taufik, who said that the train towards Bukit Panjang at Kaki Bukit had not been moving “for more than 5 minutes”.

“Expect delay,” he added.

Best thing I ate this week: Eggs 'n Things pancakes

0

What: Fresh Strawberry, Whipped Cream and Macadamia Nuts Pancakes ($19.90)

Where: Eggs ‘n Things, Plaza Singapura, #03-79/83

Who doesn’t enjoy a good all-day breakfast?

And if you have a soft spot for pancakes, this place offers really decent ones.

Eggs ‘n Things has made its first South-east Asian foray outside its native Hawaii, with the opening of a new restaurant at Plaza Singapura today (Dec 20). The chain’s other outlets are in Japan and Guam.

At a media preview yesterday, we sampled the desserts (or breakfast, to some) that the cafe is known for – namely the pancakes and waffles, smothered in a mound of whipped cream made from a special recipe.

Banana wafflesPhoto: AsiaOne

Between pancakes and waffles, the former were definitely superior, with its thin but fluffy texture.

However, be warned that you’ll have to eat them fast, as the light and pillowy cream also means that it starts to melt within minutes – our group saw the tower keeling over before our very eyes as we were taking photos.

There are three sauces to accompany your pancakes – maple syrup, coconut and the uniquely-flavoured guava syrup. But for me, the delicate cream provides just the right amount of sweetness.

A bonus? The strawberries were surprisingly sweet and juicy as well. But I wished that could be more of the crushed macadamias that were sprinkled on top of the cream.

The plates are clearly made to be shared, as the portion of five mini pancakes is good for at least two persons.

Of course, with its namesake, we had to give the eggs a go as well.

I preferred the perfectly-done eggs benny (with smoked salmon and avocado, $19.90) over the rather flat omelette.

Besides breakfast food, they also serve popular Hawaiian favourites, such as the all-too familiar Acai and Ahi Poke bowls, as well as Loco Moco (hamburger patty served with sunny side up eggs on rice, and drenched in brown gravy).

If you’ve travelled to Tokyo, you may have come across the long queues at its Harajuku outlet, and it remains to be seen if the restaurant in Singapore will also draw an endless crowd. But judging by how Singaporeans love anything that’s new, it probably will.

K-pop agency system comes under fire in wake of Jonghyun's death

0

Late singer Jonghyun’s will showed that the main vocalist of SHINee had suffered severe depression.

Following the initial shock, calls to revamp the competitive, controlled and stressful ecosystem of idol singers are resonating in the K-pop scene.

“Once (our agency) took our phone, so we used a prepaid phone. We also snuck out of our living quarters when we weren’t supposed to. We made the shape of a person on the bed. But we had nowhere else to go, so we just talked for hours at a cafe in Gangnam Station,” Hyonmin of T-ara said in a recent interview with Korea media.

The question had been “Have you ever stepped out of line during your nine years as an idol singer?” In response, the K-pop star of nine years — which is significant in a society where seniority holds great value — described stepping out of her room without permission as a misdeed.

It is conventional in the Korean music scene for agencies to keep their stars on a tight leash — so to speak — to the extent of making the members of a group live together.

It is not uncommon for the companies to confiscate singers’ phones, a trend that Lee Hong-gi of F.T. Island jokingly said started with his group.

Earlier this month, BTS’ agency reportedly moved the boy band to new living quarters. Members of the K-pop sensation still live in what is essentially a dormitory, albeit set in the most expensive apartment in the country.

The close monitoring of idol singers derives from K-pop’s unique ecosystem: stars are rarely discovered, they are made.

The K-pop scene revolves around talent agencies, with the three biggest being YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and S.M. Entertainment, the agency for SHINee.

Talent scouts scour high school singing contests, auditions for reality TV and every other perceivable corner to find talent. Trainees are honed by professionals for years under contracts, and only a handful out of thousands are picked as potential star material.

Even then, the competition is not over. “Being a Girl Group in Korea,” a book by journalist Lee Hak-jun, depicts the long, winding path idol wannabes have to go through. Lee spent months with the members of Nine Muses before its official debut, during which he found that the young women faced immense mental and physical pressure.

Star Empire Entertainment even brought in a backup member just weeks before the debut for them to practice with, just to remind the members that any one of them could be replaced at any time.

The high school student quit shortly after, crumbling under the pressure and animosity of her older peers. However, one member was eventually replaced by another trainee. It was her alleged romantic relationship with a staff member that crushed her dreams.

“If you become a star while doing whatever you want, sleeping as much as you want, then the world would be really unfair. If you are unsure, you better quit now, for other people’s sake,” staff of the agency were quoted as saying in the book. “When you make it big, your words would be law. But right now we know better than you about this business, so swallow your pride,”

As such, the trainees are required to forgo their personal lives — dating, friendship, and hobbies — and to keep perfecting dance choreography, which the public might never even see.

“In short, it is a system that collects a number of youngsters with potential and beats them into shape, transforming them into the star that the public wants,” Lee wrote in his book. “This system devised by a handful of geniuses is cruel by nature. … Success and failure is determined in mere seconds. Billions of won in investment can go up in smoke, or yield much larger profit, so the system has to be cruel.”

The loss from “failed” singers falls on the shoulders of agencies, which try to milk every last penny out of the successful ones instead.

In March, the Fair Trade Commission ordered major agencies to revise clauses that forced singers to sign exclusive contracts with them.

Among other revisions was the clause that forced singers to pay pack two to three times the agencies’ investment if the singers choose to terminate their contracts.

Even after debuting, most idol singers are left under the micromanagement of agencies. Regulations by agencies make it nearly impossible for singers to have personal lives. Furthermore, publicly revealed relationships like that of Taeyang and Min Hyo-rin — who recently announced that they will tie the knot in February — are extremely rare for K-pop stars.

In Lee’s book, he asked the dance teacher of Nine Muses — who once aspired to be a K-pop star — if he wanted to be a star in his next life.

“No, I don’t,” he answered. “I’ve seen how stars live their lives. I don’t want that life. I just want to dance.”

Frozen yogurt chain llaollao planning a return to Singapore in 2018

0

The Spanish brand says Singapore is a “key market” and regaining its presence is now a primary objective following the closure of all its local outlets earlier this month.

Spanish frozen yogurt chain llaollao will be closing down in Singapore to make way for another European froyo brand Yole starting from Thursday (Dec 7). (Photos: llaollao Singapore Facebook/D+1 Holding)

SINGAPORE: Spanish brand llaollao is planning to make its popular frozen yogurt available  in Singapore again as soon as next year.

Given that Singapore is a key market, the company has made regaining its presence here one of its primary objectives and is in search of new locations to reopen llaollao as soon as possible, a spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia.

Channel NewsAsia first reported on Dec 6 that the popular froyo chain would be closing down in Singapore to make way for a new brand called Yole as D+1 Holding, the company that was the master franchisee of llaollao in Singapore, said that it would no longer be continuing the franchise.

In a Facebook post on Dec 12, llaollao said it was “far from finished” and called the closure a “unilateral decision” on the part of its master franchisee.

To that, D+1 Holding said in a media release on Dec 14 that it did so after llaollao “vehemently rejected” its suggestions for menu improvements and “imposed many other obstacles” for it in Singapore.

Llaollao, which sells frozen yogurt with a wide variety of toppings and opened to much fanfare four years ago in Singapore, told Channel NewsAsia that it is “very disappointed” with the turn of events for the brand here.

However, it has begun work on a relaunching strategy in Singapore, encouraged by the high acceptance of its product and “incredible number of messages” it has received from customers “urging them to maintain their presence in the country”, the llaollao spokesperson said.

Here's why no one has quit their job at Fan Bingbing's company

0

A seven-figure year-end bonus, an apartment as a wedding gift – the list of staff benefits at Chinese actress Fan Bingbing’s production company will turn anyone green with envy.

And that’s not forgetting other rewards such as overseas trips, new laptops and mobile phones.

It’s really not hard to see why no one has quit their job there in recent years.

A recent article by HRGO studied Fan’s management style and called her a shining example of a great boss.

It explained that the low staff turnover rate at the 10-year-old company is the result of the actress treating her employees well.

Photo: Weibo/Fan Bingbing

Monetary perks aside, Fan, 36, is known for her good relationship with about 30 employees, often thanking her ‘brothers and sisters’ for their hard work and attributing her success to her team.

The actress also sat down for a meal with them – her treat of course – before catching a flight back to China for work last month.

The A-lister made US$17 million (S$23 million) last year and was the only Chinese actress on Forbes’ 2016 list of the highest-paid actresses.

With her generous ways, it appears she’s truly deserving of the moniker Master Fan.

You worked hard, Jonghyun, you did well

0

A fan pays tribute to the beloved SHINee member.

2017 was a hard year for Shawols.

A case filed last August immediately divided the fans. A petition that demanded that SHINee’s leader, Onew, be taken off the team quickly followed suit, while other Shawols intensely fought to be heard that they want the group to remain intact.

We got emotional over seeing Dubu on SM Entertainment’s Season’s Greetings SHINee teaser, ending his four-month hiatus with a two-second appearance on the said video.

But we never thought things could get more heartbreaking.

On the night of December 18, news of Jonghyun’s passing flooded our digital feeds. Headline after headline reported his alleged suicide: the SHINee member was said to be rushed to the hospital after he was found unconscious in his Seoul apartment.

He was only 27. That evening, we all held on to the hope that he would regain his consciousness. And honestly, that is one wish all fans still have in our hearts.

Jonghyun’s death feels like losing a longtime friend. Fans have known and grown with the idol group, and with its lead singer Jonghyun, for almost a decade.

In 2008, this second-generation K-pop group was the youth’s icon-and continues to be the reminder of the youth we once had. In our coming-of-age years, we sang along to “Replay,” “JULIETTE,” “Amigo,” “Ring Ding Dong” and “Lucifer. As the years went by, our tunes changed to “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “View,” “Married to the Music” and “Feel Good.”

And all these years, Jonghyun had always been the first to sing and introduce that SHINee’s back.

For the rest of the world, he is this South Korean group’s lead singer. But for the fans, we know him as the one who always strikes that first note. The one who constantly slays that first verse of the comeback song with his whistling vocals-a prince of K-pop in his own right.

Growing up with SHINee meant they were part of a past we fondly look back to. They were part of our after-school routines and conversations, and it is with this K-pop group that we learned how an “obsession” plays out.

Even those who didn’t have Bling-bling Jonghyun as their bias loved him. He brought good energy to every concert and show we saw him in-whether we were watching him win Yoogeun’s love, act as his embarrassed alter ego Jong-Mi, or witness his comedic lashing out at the production teams of variety shows.

Jonghyun was the funny one and claimed to be the most handsome member in the group. He was always wearing a smile on his face, and laughed ridiculously like a seal when humored-his smile and laugh were very infectious.

Until now, during reunions, we talk about SHINee, how the group has dynamically changed their sound and identity, and how each member has begun picking up a talent after another to add to their entertainment arsenal.

We were there since SHINee’s debut, we’re still here for every comeback, and we are ready to continue following our favourite idols in whatever track they were taking-solo music careers, dramatic acting, theatre, variety and reality TV.

This year, we had been talking about how the group neared the damning expiration date of a K-pop group as the group will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2018. We rallied for “5HINee” to be together when they reach this milestone, only to feel defeated on that Monday night.

I remember watching clips of Jonghyun’s “Inspired” solo concert just a week ago. The same light stick ocean that was glowed brightly in aqua surrounded him. The fans eagerly sang along to each track, never letting that stadium be drowned by silence even for just a second.

He sang his hit single “Lonely” in a duet with the crowd. He never allowed himself sing the word “lonely” on stage, and I hope that at that very moment, he had the company he needed, even just for a while.

Thank you, Jonghyun, for every song that inspired us to be in touch with our own emotions as you were with yours.

Thank you for the light you brought to countless people who had the pleasure of knowing you and to the millions of fans who will continue to feel your loss.

You’ve worked hard, our Jonghyun, you did well.

26 injured in multi-vehicle collision near Woodlands Checkpoint

SINGAPORE: A bus driver and 25 passengers were injured after an accident near Woodlands Checkpoint on Wednesday (Dec 20) morning.

Authorities said they were alerted to the incident at 21 Woodlands Crossing at about 6am.

Channel NewsAsia understands it was a multi-vehicle collision involving two trailers, a bus and a car.

Photos circulating on social media showed the car sandwiched between two trucks.

Photos posted on Facebook show a car sandwiched between two trucks with its bonnet wedged under a trailer, crushed.

The 26 injured were sent to Khoo Teck Puat, Ng Teng Fong and Tan Tock Seng hospitals, said police.

The bus driver and his passengers suffered mostly minor injuries, while the other drivers involved in the crash escaped unharmed.
