SINGAPORE – Bryan Lim, who wrote in a Facebook post in June that he wanted permission to “open fire” on lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBTs), was fined S$3,500 in court on Friday (Nov 4).

The 36-year-old pleaded guilty to one reduced charge of making threatening communication that’s likely to cause alarm. The maximum sentence for that is a S$5,000 fine.

He was initially charged with making an electronic record inciting violence, which holds a max penalty of five years’ jail, a fine or both.

In his June 4 post on anti-LGBT Facebook page of We Are Against Pink Dot in Singapore, he wrote: “I am a Singaporean citizen. I am an NSman. I am a father. And I swore to protect my nation. Give me the permission to open fire. I would like to see these £@€$^*s die for their causes.”

The comment was in response to a post about foreign sponsorship for the annual LGBT Pink Dot event, which was held at the Speakers’ Corner on June 4.

His post went viral and several police reports were made. He later apologised for what he described as a misunderstanding, and said his words had been taken out of context.

The Canon Singapore employee was charged in court on June 30 for inciting violence against the LGBT community.
