KUALA LUMPUR – It was his favourite tea-time snack and Tan Sri Jins Shamsudin was elated to be served cucur kodok pisang (fried banana dumplings) by his wife.

But little did Puan Seri Halijah Abdullah realise that he would choke on the food and turn breathless.

The legendary actor, 82, was rushed to a clinic near their home in Kampung Pasir, Hulu Klang, but was pronounced dead at 5.45pm.

Halijah, 58, said although she accepted her husband’s death as God’s will, she found it hard to believe that eating the snack on Wednesday had led to it.

“When he was healthier, he used to like eating cucur kodok a lot.

“But after he fell sick, I never served it to him. On Wednesday, I felt like giving in.

“It’s an unsettling feeling as it was I who served it to Jins,” she said when met at their home.

Halijah said Jins ate three pieces and when he was fed the fourth, he became quiet.

“I told him to spit it out as I could feel he was choking but he did not open his mouth. I patted his back and the piece fell out.

“I gave him water and after that he vomited until he passed out. At that time he had turned pale,” she said.

Jins, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011, was buried at the Masjid Al-Ridhuan cemetery in Hulu Klang yesterday morning.

Among the many who came to pay their last respects were artistes Norman Hakim, Datin Marlia Musa, Datuk M. Nasir and Datuk DJ Dave.
