Hong Kong’s first sludge treatment facility has started to offer waste-powered spa services that locals can use for free, footage filmed on Tuesday shows.

The plant’s Environmental Education Centre (EEC) manager Alvin Cheung explained that their plant is “handling all the sludge of Hong Kong.”

Visitors of the facility are taken on guided tours to learn how thousands of tonnes of sludge are treated every day inside the facility.

Spa-goers learn that before heating their mineral water, the sludge is incinerated at a high temperature, thus creating energy that serves to not heat but also to supply energy for up to 4,000 apartments at a time.

The spa is free of charge for locals.
