A Thai transsexual Facebook idol has triggered an uproar among Myanmar Facebook users by wearing “too revealing” dress when she visited the Shwedagon Pagoda considered to be sacred by Myanmar people.
Nisamanee Lertvorapong was in a Thai dress modified to be stapless-like and to reveal a lot at the top and have high cut at the bottom. The social media personality visited the pagoda and posted for photos that have been posted on her Facebook page. Her Facebook page is being followed by over 700,000 followers.
She also made a Facebook Live from the pagoda during which she talked tongue-in-cheek that it was made of the gold robbed from Thailand during the Ayutthaya period.
Her photos and her comment drew ire from a lot of Myanmar Facebook users.
They said when they visited the Temple Emerald Buddha, they always dressed properly to show respect to the place. They said her comment about the gold robbery during the Ayutthaya period caused rifts between the two peoples.
Following the uproar, Nisamanee issued an apology on her Facebook wall. She said she made the mistake because she didn’t realise the differences of cultures of the two people and she did not intend to cause the rifts.
“I would like to issue my apology to Myanamar and its people for what I have done,” she wrote.
She explained that she did not know her dress code was improper because she was allowed inside and nobody tried to stop her. She added she noted during the Facebook Live session that she was simply making a tongue-in-cheek comment.
