A Singaporean woman, Ms Ai-Ling Lee, is up for two Oscars for her sound work on the critically acclaimed musical La La Land.
She and Mildred Iatrou Morgan have been nominated for Best Sound Editing and she is also up for Best Sound Mixing with Andy Nelson and Steve A. Morrow.
According to Variety, she is the first Asian woman to be nominated in sound editing and also part of the first female team recognised in a category traditionally dominated by men.
She told the entertainment trade publication: “I always had the desire to do more, to do mixes, to push my skills and build up my resume so people know I can do a lot of things within sound.”
Variety also said she grew up watching movies with her audiophile father who had a top-notch home theatre system.
She moved to Los Angeles in 1998.
These are Ms Lee’s first Oscar nominations, but she has also been nominated for her work on other films, including Golden Reel Award nods for Best Sound Editing in Domestic Features – Sound Features and Foley for Spider-Man 2 (2004), Best Sound Editing – Sound Effects and Foley in a Feature Film for Watchmen (2009), Best Sound Editing – Sound Effects, Foley, Dialogue and ADR in an Animation Feature Film for Tangled (2010) and Best Sound Editing – Sound Effects and Foley in a Feature Film for Transformers: Dark Of The Moon (2011).
