SINGAPORE – National swimmers Joseph Schooling and Theresa Goh will receive National Day Awards for their recent sporting achievements in Rio de Janeiro, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) announced in a statement today (Oct 7).
Schooling will be conferred the Meritorious Service Medal and Goh, the Public Service Star at the National Day Awards Investiture in early November.
In August, Schooling made history at the Rio 2016 Olympics by winning the first Olympic gold medal for Singapore and setting a new Olympic record in the 100m men’s butterfly final.
“His victory moved the entire nation, and inspired young athletes and Singaporeans to set new goals, reach for their dreams and pursue their aspirations,” the MCCY said.
Schooling said it is a “great honour” to receive the award.
“It is an achievement that everyone shares a part of. This award recognition motivates me to keep working hard and I will continue to do my best to fly our Singapore flag high on the world stage,” the 21-year-old added.
Paralympic bronze medallist Goh is being recognised for her “commitment and perseverance in the pursuit of sporting excellence” on top of her performance in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB4 final, the MCCY said.
The 29-year-old was previously conferred the Public Service Medal in 2008 following her accomplishments in various para championships in 2006 and 2007.
“It’s a truly great honour to be conferred the Public Service Star, as it serves as an encouragement and recognition of the hard work by the people who’ve helped me get to where I am today. I am incredibly thankful!” Goh said.
MCCY Minister Grace Fu congratulated both athletes, and said that their achievements have brought tremendous pride to the country.
“Their achievements have brought tremendous pride to the country. The National Day Award is a well-deserved recognition of their contribution to sporting excellence and for their impact on the society, particularly with the youth,” she said.
