The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has committed a total of $150,000 for disaster response efforts in areas of the Philippines and Vietnam which are affected by Typhoons Ferdie (Meranti), Karen (Sarika) and Haima (Lawin).

Of this amount, $100,000 is committed to the Philippines and $50,000 has been set aside for Vietnam.

The money will be used for the provision of blankets, shelter materials, hot meals, family and food packs, biscuits, as well as psychosocial support services to the affected communities, SRC said on Oct 19.

Two teams of staff and volunteers equipped with disaster management skills are also on standby to be deployed to the Philippines and Vietnam.

In the Philippines, the team is likely to be deployed in the northern part of Luzon, where Typhoon Haima – the strongest yet of the recent typhoons in Philippines – is expected to cause the most damage.

Typhoons have recently caused severe flooding, bursting rivers, mudslides and landslides in Northern Philippines.

In Vietnam, a team is on standby to work with the a local team in relief operations in the central region, which suffered the brunt of the typhoons.
