SINGAPORE — The Sentosa Gateway Tunnel, a one-way road tunnel that will connect outbound traffic from Sentosa Island directly to Lower Delta Road and Keppel Road, is set to open on April 27 at 10am, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Monday (April 3).

In a statement, LTA said the new tunnel will help alleviate the current congestion experienced at at-grade traffic junctions at Sentosa Gateway, Telok Blangah Road, Kampong Bahru Road and Lower Delta Road, especially during evening peak hours and the weekends.

However, only cars and motorcycles are permitted to use the tunnel due to its height constraint and “for fire safety reasons”. Buses and goods vehicles are to continue using the existing at-grade roads towards Telok Blangah Road, said the LTA.

“As the Sentosa Gateway Tunnel had to be constructed close to the North East Line MRT tunnels and the West Coast Highway viaduct foundations, it was designed with a height constraint of 3.5m,” LTA added. “Warning signs and height restriction beams will be installed to prevent buses and goods vehicles from entering the Sentosa Gateway Tunnel. LTA will carry out a series of engagement activities including briefings and sending direct mailers to stakeholders in the coming weeks.”.

The LTA also advised motorists to plan their routes in advance and follow the traffic signs within and outside of the tunnel to help them get to their destinations.
