Singapore: Minister blasts local news portal for spreading ‘falsehoods’ in Benjamin Lim case

0

SINGAPORE’S Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam and local independent news portal The Online Citizen (TOC) are locked in a war of words over the controversial case involving Benjamin Lim.

In January, 14-year-old Benjamin had been questioned by police over allegations of molesting a girl, and subsequently jumped to his death in an apparent suicide from his bedroom window just hours later.

Though he was a minor, he had been interrogated on his own, and was not allowed to see his mother.

The case had brought on a barrage of criticisms from the public on how police had handled the incident, with many calling on the government to provide answers.

According to Shanmugam, TOC’s coverage of the incident, comprising of more than 20 articles, included “falsehoods” that either alleged or implied that school officials did not provide adequate care and support for Benjamin, that police investigations had been heavy-handed and intimidating, and that Benjamin was made to confess to a crime he did not commit.

Shanmugam passed out copies of a 20-page document at Parliament during a public discussion of the issue, which summarized the “unfounded implications” he had taken issue with.

In his speech, he had also accused TOC of carrying out “a planned, orchestrated campaign” using the “falsehoods”.

Responding to Shanmugam’s assertions, TOC posted an editorial on their site today, rebutting several of the minister’s points.

Among the points covered were what the police had been wearing when they picked up Benjamin from school to be questioned, whether his family had requested privacy, and allegations that TOC was carrying out an “orchestrated campaign”.

According to TOC, the majority of its articles about the case had been letters and opinion pieces contributed by the public, as “Benjamin’s story triggered a strong reaction among our readers.”

TOC went on to say that it prided itself on being an open platform which allowed people to raise questions regarding the incident, and that the public’s reaction had been “spontaneous” rather than “orchestrated”.

“Had the police, Home Affairs or Law Ministries, or anyone from the government written to TOC or responded to our requests for comment, we would have been happy to present their views too.”

— The Online Citizen

TOC also pointed out that “inaccuracies” were not the same as “falsehoods”, saying it had done its best with the information on hand, which was why it rejected Shanmugam’s claim that it had deliberately attempted to mislead.

This guy is the only legal person to drive a Tesla in S'pore, and he went through a lot for it

0

Tesla is probably one of the sexiest automobile brand right now, at least in this part of the world where the brand is not available yet. In his recent tour to San Francisco, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also spent some time visiting Tesla.

With its popularity, one would expect to see Tesla on the roads of Singapore, especially since Tesla is equipped with smart driving system, and is an electric car which produces zero emissions – in line with Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative as well as green city aspiration.

In a recent article published on Stuff Singapore, the team spoke to an IT-professional Joe Nguyen, who managed to get a Tesla Model S licensed to be on the roads of Singapore. But that was without all the red tape and long approval process he had to go through first.

How long? Seven long months.

How it all began

According to the article on Stuff, Joe purchased the 2014 model S from Hong Kong more than a year back. Here’s how a Tesla S looks like:

Once he managed to buy the car, he shipped it back to Singapore, and paid the necessary customs duties on it.

However, Joe revealed to Stuff Singapore that that was the easy part. The tough part followed where he had to deal with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for the necessary approvals so that he can drive his Tesla S in Singapore.

“The first few weeks, the car just sat in a warehouse gathering dust while the LTA asked me for lots of paperwork,” Joe told Stuff Singapore.

Paperworks from LTA to EMA to VICOM

What started from the paperworks requirement from LTA soon saw Joe providing various paperwork requests such as emissions, certificate of conformity, vehicle specs and more. After the paperworks, LTA then required Joe to check in with the Energy Market Authority (EMA), since Tesla is an electric car and EMA is the agency in charge of the energy sector in Singapore.

“I was told to call them (EMA) so I called them and they thought that I was an importer. And I said, “No, I’m just a normal individual importing a car,” Joe told Stuff Singapore.

Shortly after that, there were no news from EMA, and Joe was then referred by LTA to VICOM in order to get his Tesla tested for emissions. VICOM is a subsidiary of ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited, and is in charge of technical testing and inspection services for vehicles in Singapore.

However, the whole inspection process with VICOM took a few months as the checking was put on hold.

According to its website, VICOM, a publicly listed on Singapore’s stock exchange since 1995, claims to be the first in the world to employ a computerised and integrated vehicle inspection system more than 25 years ago. Over 300,000 vehicle checks are conducted at their centres annually.

“I figured they had a process for electric cars because there are actual electric cars in Singapore, there’s the Nissan Leaf, RND cars, there’s Mitsubishi electric cars. But since my Tesla was not brand new, it had to go to VICOM and they admitted that they had never tested an electric car before so they did not know how to proceed,” Joe told Stuff Singapore.

Since a testing on Tesla has never been done before, LTA and VICOM then did a discharge test to see how much electricity the car consumes and needed Joe to sign a declaration that he will only be charging his Tesla at home.

“They were afraid I would charge the car in a public place,” Joe told Stuff Singapore.

Only legal Tesla car in Singapore

The whole process from shipping his car into Singapore, getting the approval, checking the emission requirements, and finally signing a declaration, took seven months, and Joe is now probably the only person that can drive a Tesla in Singapore legally. It is also bizarre how there are no procedure in place to legalize or test electric cars in Singapore.

We thought Singapore should be a lot more progressive than this by now? Aren’t there hybrid automobile roaming the roads of Singapore now?

Stuff Singapore also pointed out that back in 2011, Tesla did open an office here in Singapore, however, it closed its operations 6 months later.

Tesla came to Singapore believing they would be able to secure some kind of ‘green tax incentive’ from the Singapore Government which would make their car considerably cheaper than the petrol powered competition. Without incentives, Tesla was too expensive even for automobile enthusiasts.

The official reason from the Economic Development Board of Singapore in 2011 was that the Tesla had ‘not met technical requirements’ for the tax incentive.

So will we see other Teslas on the roads of Singapore soon? It will probably take at least a while before that happens. Hopefully after PM’s recent ride on Tesla’s Model S in San Francisco, things will change for the better soon.

JC STUDENT: HOMEWORK ALREADY SO TIRING, WHY IRRITATE US WITH CLEANING DUTY?

1

<Credits: Jacob Tan>

Recently the new Acting Minister for Education Ng Chee Meng has embarked on his ‘new’ cleaning programme. “Getting the kids involved in such daily activities is really a good way to get them to learn personal responsibility and even social responsibility,” said Mr Ng.

As a student within the school system for 11 years, these are my views and opinions of this new initiative – it is entirely irrelevant and unnecessary. There are already existing initiatives on the ground to cover such things.

Generally there are initiatives on the ground that have been in place to maintain cleanliness in a school. Many would be familiar with the duty roster put in place at the beginning of the year which has to be supervised by the class monitor. Programmes such as this already ensure that students have a sense of belonging, sense of hygiene and a sense of responsibility.

In addition such a programme is rather feeble, because it is not as far-reaching. In fact there are other programmes such as the Happy Toilets programme, which’s purposes are to inculcate good toilet etiquette, personal hygiene habits and social responsibility in students.

Furthermore every single school throughout the island, regardless of if the school is a neighbourhood school or a top school, would have had such initiatives or programmes like the Project Buddy Clean in Marsiling Primary School. As such, this programme for all it is hailed, does very little.

Students already have a lot on their plates and don’t need to be further irritated by such a ‘cleaning programme’. Schools are primarily an environment to grow as a person. With a mountain of work as an A-Level student and having to sleep at 12am, there is very little I can relate to being forced up to clean up

A lot is expected from Singaporean students as it is. At the tender age of 12, they have to take an exam which determines the kind of people they will mix with in life. At 16 they take another exam which determines their future. We do not need another ‘social responsibility building’ project to be thrust at us.

It is already very tiring for me to deal with my mountain of homework. This school cleaning programme will only be another KPI (key-performance-index) schools and the Ministry of Education (MOE) will use to promote itself and its staff. I am just tired of being used by schools and MOE in this manner.

The ‘school cleaning programme’ is perhaps the first initiative the new Acting Minister for Education (Schools) kick-started after he took office. But instead of this cleaning programme, the Minister could as one of the first acts after assuming office, have come out with a programme to ease the burden of school students and that would have been better appreciated by us students.

That is one programme students like me are still waiting for.

STOP EATING IN YOUR CARS TO AVOID A COCKROACH VILLAGE INFESTATION

0

Dear ASS,

I set a cockroach trap on the floor of my front passenger seat hoping to catch 1 or 2 creepy crawlies after I saw a few insects running about in my car. To my shock, when I removed the trap one month later, there was a village of cockroaches found in the trap. There were 11 to 12 media roaches and many other small little baby ones.

I hope this photo will serve as a warning to all car owners to regularly check your cars for pests especially if you allow your children to eat in the car. This is what can happen.

A lunch date with Elvis Presley

0

Johnnie’s Drive-In in Tupelo, Mississippi, is the kind of mom-and-pop diner that looks like it hasn’t changed since the mid-1950s when it was the favourite eating spot for a local school kid named Elvis Presley.

It’s still doing good business, and every lunchtime table was taken as I enjoyed the local specialty, a doughburger and fries. Presley preferred their cheeseburgers, and kept coming back for them even when he became famous. A photo of him hung above what was his favourite booth.

A tall, slim man in his 70s entered and asked if he might take a seat at my table. “Sure,” I said, and we were away into conversation in that casual American manner. His name was Guy Harris, and when he told me he was one of Presley’s best friends, I figured that everybody in Tupelo of a certain age would probably claim that. But in Harris’ case it was true. His mother delivered Presley when he was born in a shotgun shack on 8 January 1935, the same tiny two-room house I’d just seen at the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum, which is what brings music fans like me to Tupelo.

It was my third visit to Tupelo and the King’s birthplace, but the first time I’d met anyone who actually knew Presley. I was embarrassed to ask the questions Harris must have been asked 10,000 times before, but this was my chance. So what was Presley like?

FIRM POLICE ACTION HAS PULLED MANY WAYWARD TEENS BACK ON TRACK, DO WE WANT TO BREAK IT?

0

Dear All Singapore Stuff,

I refer to the public concern about Benjamin Lim's unfortunate death. At the same age of 14, i was one of the many that plain clothes officers bought away from school to cantonment for a interview, donkey years ago. I saw a few more students about the same age in the CID office when I arrived.

Talk about policing procedures? This is definitely nothing new. I believe some of here have the same encounter as me which was "normal" for troubled teenagers. I was even given an official warning in writing by the police at the age of 14. When you are suspected of a crime, you are obliged to assist with investigation without any resistance, at any age. Whether or not a minor, old folks, adult, man or women. The purpose of police work is to prevent crimes and or, stop it at the earliest.

This is why our country is listed as one of the safest city in the world, thanks to the systems and procedures. If the boy is clean, he could have stand still for himself than ending his life. His already 14, not 4. Kids this generations are much matured compared to my time. I've been through this at the same age, just like many others.

When you are not sure how the system works, don't argue about the procedures. It had been like this, for decades. And from my personal account, I've seen countless teenagers being pulled back to the right track just in time. This is just a sad case of a boy committing suicide. Let him go in peace.

BURNT PRC BEGGAR BACK TO SCAM KIND S'POREANS, DO NOT FALL FOR HER PITIFUL ACT

0

<Facebook complaint by Yukimi Wu>

PRC beggar is here again! She was spotted at Hougang. Many uncles and aunties saw her condition out of pitifulness, gave her a lot of money. When I approached her she said she is from China. I asked her does she know begging in Singapore is illegal?

She saw me took out my phone and immediately stand up and leave. I followed her and saw her took a Comfort cab 3002 and left. We, Singaporeans are always stupid and easily get conned by these PRCs beggars! I saw her leaving with hundred of dollars rich in her pocket.

Please share and beware of this PRC lady who is seen to be severely burnt on her whole body.
