French PM vows Euro 2016 will go ahead despite Brussels bombings
PARIS – Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Wednesday that this summer’s Euro 2016 football tournament would go ahead as planned in France despite the deadly terror bombings which rocked Brussels the previous day.
Asked in a call-in programme on Europe 1 radio station whether it was wise to maintain the event, given the level of threat of there being another terrorist attack, Valls said not to do so would be “a victory for terrorists.”
“We need to have sporting events. But on the condition that they can be held under the best of conditions,” he said.
Valls pointed to the staging of the Cop 21 international climate talks in Paris last November just days after the jihadist terror attacks that killed 130 people in Paris.
That showed, he said, that France can successfully host major events “and we are going to continue to do so.” There were further vows that Euro 2016 would go ahead from France’s sports minister Thierry Braillard.
“We have been repeating it for several months now that the terrorist menace has been in the forefront of our planning since the start and to cancel or postpone the European football championships would be just giving in to these cowards,” he told L’Equipe sports daily.
“In terms of security, we cannot do more than we are already doing,” he added.
The Euro 2016 tournament takes place in France from June 10 to July 10 with 24 teams playing 51 matches at 10 venues across the country from Marseille in the south to Lille in the north and also Paris.

Singaporean couple convicted for starving Philippine maid
A Singaporean couple were convicted on Wednesday of violating employment laws for starving their Philippine maid until her weight dropped to 29 kilograms (64 pounds).
Trader Lim Choon Hong and his wife, Chong Sui Foon, both 47, admitted failing to provide enough food for a foreign domestic worker over a 15-month period.
They will be sentenced at a later date. The offence is punishable by up to a year in jail plus a maximum fine of Sg$10,000 ($7,300).
A district court heard that Thelma Oyasan Gawidan, 40, lost nearly 20 kg, shed hair and stopped menstruating while working for the couple at their condominium in the posh Orchard Road area.
Gawidan was only allowed two meals a day, usually a few slices of white bread and small portions of instant noodles prepared by Chong.
Even when Gawidan went with the family on a Hong Kong holiday, Chong made sure to pack white bread and instant noodles for her maid.
Gawidan had no access to her mobile phone and was not allowed to go out on her own to buy food, court papers showed.
About a year into her employment, she was made to use a bathroom next to the condominium’s swimming pool whenever she had to relieve herself or take a shower, and had to be accompanied by a family member. She was only allowed to shower twice a week.
Gawidan ran away in April 2014 and called a compatriot for help.
She was taken to a migrant worker shelter which helped her file a complaint with the manpower ministry.
Many Singapore households depend on foreign domestic help. In 2015 there were 231,500 foreign maids working in the affluent city-state, mostly from Indonesia and the Philippines.
Lim and Chong will appear before the court again on April 22 after a psychiatric assessment of them is completed.

Woman, 28, found dead in locked room in Circuit Road flat
The body of a young woman was found in a Circuit Road flat on Tuesday night (March 22), local media reported.
Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that the landlord made the grisly discovery in the locked room of a male tenant who recently left the country.
He had returned to the flat to check on the vacated room after his tenant told him he was going on a work trip in Malaysia for some time.
Shin Min Daily News reported that the landlord entered the room using a spare key and thought his tenant was sleeping when he first saw someone covered with a blanket in bed.
After he returned to the room later that night, he realised that the body was motionless and made a police report.
The deceased woman, a 28-year-old Chinese national, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. She did not have any visible injuries.
According to Wanbao, other tenants identified the deceased as the male tenant’s girlfriend who would visit and stay over at the flat occasionally.
The man is currently uncontactable.
The police has classified the case as an unnatural death. Investigations are on-going.
